In the early 1900s, so-called race filmmakers set out to produce black-oriented pictures to counteract the racist caricatures that had dominated cinema from its inception. Richard E. Norman, a southern-born white filmmaker, was one such pioneer. From humble beginnings as a roving "home talent" filmmaker, recreating photoplays that starred local citizens, Norman would go on to produce high-quality feature-length race pictures. Together with his better-known contemporaries Oscar Micheaux and Noble and George Johnson, Richard E. Norman helped to define early race filmmaking. Making use of unique archival resources, including Norman's personal and professional correspondence, detailed distribution records, and newly discovered original shooting scripts, this book offers a vibrant portrait of race in early cinema.

Richard Neutra. Möbel Furniture: Der Körper und die Sinne / The body and senses
With his houses flooded with light, Austria-American architect Richard J. Neutra (1892-1970) shaped the scene of Californian Modernism. From there he rose to be one of the most influential names in the history of modern architecture. However, in contrast to his peers - such as Aalto, Breuer, Jacobsen and Prouve - Neutra's furniture designs have long been undiscovered. Author Barbara Lamprecht fills this gap by studying the extensive but little known furniture range that had faded into obscurity until Dion Neutra, Neutra's son and architectural partner, started work on the designs with German manufacturer VS, whose ties to Modernism date back to the Deutscher Werkbund. Referring to the original sketches and patent drawings, the author focused on the details of the designs to show the furniture's role in creating the balanced environments that Neutra intended for his clients. Each element: furniture, lighting, building, Nature, and landscape all worked together as a "Gesamtwerk" (a complete expression) to create a "sensorium," or a "soul anchorage," as Neutra called those environments best suited to human well-being.

Barbara Anderson was a Jehovah's Witness from 1954 to 1997. But while working as a researcher and writer at their worldwide headquarters from 1982 thru 1992, something went terribly wrong. Barbara uncovered a conflict that would derail her plans, and change her life forever. Her unique story shines a bright light on Watchtower/JW.ORG policies that not only protect sexual predators, but unduly influence members to believe policies and beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses are Bible-based and inspired from God. Barbara's story also includes unprecedented commentary from Bonnie Zieman, M.Ed., psychotherapist, and Jon Atack. Bonnie and Jon have written extensively about coercive control and report behind the scenes, while Barbara shares her life story, about what was going on in her high-control world and subsequent escape, from a physical and psychological point of view. Praise for Barbara Anderson Uncensored - Eyewitness to Deceit: Nothing short of awe-inspiring Barbara's valor in the face of an epic David versus Goliath battle to protect children against the policies of an international organization demonstrates how the efforts of one person, who stands up for right, truly can effect change. - Mariuca Rofick This unique book, about a woman who has changed so many lives, will also give readers a rare peek behind the scenes of how policies and beliefs are formed at the world headquarters for Jehovah's Witnesses. - Mark O'Donnell I found myself spellbound reading Barbara's story, which provides a unique perspective on how things work at Watchtower's headquarters. Her time spent there as a researcher yielded some real nuggets regarding Watchtower's history that were previously unknown, and expose how Watchtower white washes its history. - Lee Elder I highly recommend reading Barbara Anderson's book. It is a candid narrative of a worldwide religion, one that most people have seen as harmless until now. She also offers a workable plan of action for change. - Joanna Foreman

Richard Kilvington was an obscure fourteenth-century philosopher whose Sophismata deal with a series of logic-linguistic conundrums of a sort which featured extensively in philosophical discussions of this period. This is the first ever translation or edition of his work. As well as an introduction to Kilvington's work, the editors provide a detailed commentary. This edition will prove of considerable interest to historians of medieval philosophy who will realise from the evidence presented here that Kilvington deserves to be studied just as seriously as Duns Scotus or William of Ockham.
