What Drifted Here is a book of intensely lyrical meditations that dwells in the silent, often overlooked or seemingly ordinary places where the mysterious and miraculous abide, and where amidst love and grief, we draw ever closer to the heart of the spiritual. The poems, some in prose form and dramatic monologue, take dreamlike leaps into worlds both personal and historical, glimpsing through the cracks something we can never wholly know but which leaves us changed.
Texte Zur Mittelassyrischen Palastwirtschaft in Assur: Der Fundkomplex Assur 13058. Teil I. Mit Einem Beitrag Zu Den Siegeln Von Barbara Feller
English summary: In Part I of this work, Eva Cancik-Kirschbaum presents a collection of texts concerning the palace economy of Assur in the Middle Assyrian period (13th/12th century BC) based on more than one-hundred sources derived from the palace administration itself. Once these records had served their purpose in the administration, they were discarded and discovered in debris piles during the excavation of the palace. These sources deal with various areas of economic activity within the palace. A number of work-agreements involve the processing of leather for shoes or the construction of chariots and other texts are concerned with consignments for spices, the manufacture of perfumes, or with the supply of other materials for use or consumption in the palace. The sources describe cedar wood imported from northern Syria (Hatti), jewelry that was gifted to a princess, and the sources also document gifts of the Assyrian kings to foreign dignitaries. The chief party responsible for managing these aspects of the palace economic appears regularly as the "abarakku rabu" or majordomo of the royal household. These documents show that the abarakku rabu placed a central role in the economic organization of the Middle Assyrian state, a point which has hardly been recognized in the scholarship until now. German description: In Teil I der Texte zur mittelassyrischen Palastwirtschaft in Assur (13./12. Jahrhundert v.

FDR’s Four Freedoms-Freedom of Speech, Freedom to Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear-were presented to the American people in his 1941 State of the Union address, and they became the inspiration for a second bill of rights, extending the New Deal and guaranteeing work, housing, medical care, and education. Although the bill never was adopted in a legal sense in this country, its principles pervaded the political landscape for an entire generation, including the War on Poverty and the Great Society reforms of the 1960s. The ideas expressed in the Four Freedoms speech inspired the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But since the late 1970s and early 1980s, these freedoms have been under assault, from administrations of both parties, economic pressures, and finally, the alleged requirements of national security. After 9/11, this process accelerated even more rapidly. The authors address the hard questions of individual freedom versus national security that are on the minds of Americans of all political stripes. They bring together the pivotal events, leaders, policies, and fateful decisions-often pathbreaking, more often ending in folly-that have subverted our constitutional government from its founding. “You reach the inescapable conclusion,” the authors write, “that the United States is a warrior nation, has been addicted to war from the start, and is able to sustain its warfare habit only by mugging American taxpayers, and believing in its mission as God’s chosen.” The Four Freedoms Under Siege features a foreword by Barbara Ehrenreich, a journalist, activist, and the author of Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America.

As governments attempt to focus more on service delivery, it has become apparent that little is known about the people who actually provide the services. Barbara Wake Carroll and David Siegel discuss structural issues and analyse the various administrative reforms developed in the last few years. They highlight field officers' perceptions of the problems in the system and suggest ways to improve field office-head office relations and the operation of field offices generally. The authors' analysis is based on more than two hundred interviews with federal and provincial civil servants in all ten provinces, in the smallest hamlets and largest cities across Canada. Using extensive quotations from these interviews, the authors allow public servants to tell their own stories and, in so doing, provide examples of the application of systematic qualitative research to Canadian political science. With its accessible style and emphasis on personal experience, Service in the Field will be of interest to students and scholars of public administration, political science, organization theory, and related disciplines in addition to people in government in both field and head offices.

Is your child afraid? There are many traumatic experiences that cause a child to become scared—from divorce to the death of a loved one, from natural disasters to abuse. Even a disturbing news event that a child only sees on television or hears about but does not experience, such as the Oklahoma City bombing or the classroom massacre in Scotland, can make a child fearful or sad. No matter what causes the situation, childhood trauma is common and should be dealt with quickly and effectively. Dr. Barbara Brooks, a psychologist who has successfully helped kids through all types of traumatic situations, provides you with the knowledge you need to put the child you love back on the path to a full and happy life. Kids don't always know how to react to feelings of distress. If these scared feelings are not expressed in a positive way, they can surface later in life when dealing with them becomes more difficult. Here are detailed instructions, based on professional techniques, to encourage kids of any age—from toddler to teenager—to reveal their feelings through words, drawings, and role playing with step-by-step advice for reassuring them and helping them let go of their fear.
