Fanny Murray was an incomparable Georgian beauty and the most desired courtesan of the 1750s. The daughter of an impoverished musician from Bath, she took London society by storm, not only as the most prized ‘purchaseable beauty’ of her day, but also as a fashion icon and muse to poets, writers and artists. She counted princes, aristocrats and politicians among her friends and lovers, but relished the company of rogues, fraudsters and ne’er-do-wells. Barbara White presents evidence to suggest that Fanny Murray participated spiritedly in the sexual antics of the notorious ‘Monks of Medmenham’, the most infamous of the Hell-fire Clubs. After she retired from prostitution, Fanny Murray reinvented herself, entering a pragmatic marriage with the Scottish actor David Ross. Surprisingly, her virtues as a devoted and faithful wife became almost proverbial. Even so, Murray could not escape her disreputable past. In 1763, a scurrilous poem dedicated to her caused a national scandal that ended in the infamous trial of the radical politician John Wilkes for obscene libel. Barbara White’s portrait of Fanny Murray takes readers from the brothels of Covent Garden to sex romps at Medmenham Abbey, from refined drawing rooms in London to marital respectability in Edinburgh. This is an illuminating contribution to the scholarly understanding and popular appreciation of a complex and intriguing period of British history. Fanny Murray’s triumph – against almost insuperable odds – is a remarkable story, as rich in the telling as it is enthralling.

An inspiring account of triumph over tragedy to sail halfway around the world and complete a six-year circumnavigation. By April 2017, retired British couple Barbara and Robert White have successfully cruised aboard their thirty-year-old sailing yacht Zoonie to the other side of the globe when natural disaster strikes. Alerted to the rapid sinking of their beloved vessel while exploring the countryside of New Zealand, they race back to her to assess the damage and set to work, determined to accomplish their ambitious journey home. Alongside the challenging reality of short-handed bluewater sailing - enduring the elements, equipment breakdown and extreme isolation - life on land becomes increasingly fraught: a dangerous bacterial infection puts Robert's heart at risk, bush fires ravage Australia as the couple sail its coast and the Covid-19 pandemic closes ports and borders, sending half of humanity - including our cruisers - into lockdown. Tens of thousands of miles from home and family, Barbara and Robert must rely on their resilience, adaptability and an unwavering curiosity to keep on exploring. As they traverse the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans, island and coastal hopping along the way, old friendships are re-ignited and new ones forged, the couple finding solace in the company of those they meet en route. Weaving stories, past and present, of the people and places of their odyssey, Barbara invites us to see the world how others experience it, with warmth, humour and an indomitable spirit. Picking up where A Tale of Two Yachts (covering the first half of their round-the-world voyage) left off, Zoonie Sails Home is an ode to a cherished boat, a love letter to slow travel and a tonic to the landlocked soul.

Statistics indicate that 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States will eventually divorce. Divorce takes a toll on the entire family, but especially the children left without either a full-time Mom or Dad. Consequences of Divorce introduces the reader to a woman whose father, while she was just a child, engaged in an eleven-year extramarital affair that eventually resulted in a divorce from his wife. Although some children of divorce experience depression, anger, confusion, lower grades in school, drug and alcohol abuse, unstable relationships, and even suicide, Barbara White Hege's story is not one of unmet challenges. In fact, she endured sadness and trauma throughout the rest of her life, but she did not live by it. Her faith in God and God's unwavering faithfulness to her turned what could have been a tragic story into a song of victory and hope. In her poignant memoir, Barbara Hege discusses her feelings about "the other woman" in her dad's life. She recounts how her mother reacted to the affair, and laments over an inheritance that should have been hers. The lessons she learns and how God causes her to "grow in grace," despite the difficulties, will inspire you. If you are a child of divorce, this book will be a life changer; the author aptly shows that coming from a broken home doesn't mean one has to be broken.

The Prayers of Black and Brown Mothers

Black and brown mothers are crying out to a God who undoubtedly hears and answers prayers. It is an intense time of difficulty, trouble, and pain. Crisis demands attention, and actions must be taken to address these unstable, uncertain, unjust, and often unpredictable situations. The perils of our time are not the results of random, isolated, unexpected activities. It results from years of human subjugation, hidden plans, secret forces, health and financial disparities, fears, and insecurities, vicious mindsets, abuse of power, racism, and absolute hatred. There is a demand and clamor for change being led by weeping, wailing, mourning mothers. It is an unseen protest; it is a powerful movement of mothers marching, chanting, and crying out for their children to a just God who will not turn them away. Poverty, violence, oppression, and murder have wrapped themselves like a python around the hearts of black and brown mothersaround the world. The incessant and continued squeeze of injustice has caused them to cry out from the unbearable pain. There is a sound filling the atmosphere and rising to heaven. The land is polluted with the blood of black and brown victims. The blood is crying out to the all-knowing God who hears and sees. Mothers are crying and will not be comforted because their children are being intimidated, abused, captured, and imprisoned. Many are no longer alive. "Hear a just cause, O Lord " A revival of prayer is arising all over the world. This sound has been heard before. Jeremiah, the Prophet, heard it in his day. It was the sound of bitter weeping and deep anguish. It was the sound of mothers crying out for theirchildren. They could not remain silent. There was no comfort. Jeremiah said, "A cry was heard in Ramah" (Jeremiah 31:15). Deep anguish and bitter weeping has overtaken the land. Mother Rachel is weeping for her children. She refuses to be comforted, for her children are gone. Jeremiah heard a prophetic sound. It was the sound produced by devastation designed to subdue a whole nation of people. It was the sound of inconsolable grief. The most ruthless of tactics used by enemy forces is to kill the children in order to break the will of those who are under attack. Jeremiah heard the cries of mothers who watched the massacre of their children. It was the sound of crisis; it was the sound of an oppressed people being abused by power and authority that had no regard for the sanctity of their lives. It was a tragedy ofunfathomable proportion. Broken hearts, broken families, and broken lives produce a sound. Black and brown mothers are incessantly crying out as they see their children being killed, captured, and taken into slavery. The prayers of black and brown mothers will not be denied; they will not be silenced. God does hear a mother's cry This anthology of prayers from the hearts of black and brown mothers is a unique compilation of co-authors who represent varying ages and perspectives. Each author shares in a brief biographical format the process of life that led them to the targeted prayer of their heart for this project. Although each author's life plan has been different, there is a common focus that unites. It is the shared experience of being a black or brown mother with the same fears and concerns forthe welfare of their children. They share a unique experience because they are black and brown. These mothers have hopes and dreams for the futures of their children. These are mothers who will not give up and have united to seek the resources of heaven by faith and prayer.

Writing and Fantasy brings together essays which restore a sense of the fantastic as a political response to cultural opportunities and pressures. It moves on from two conventional fields of discussion: the psychoanalytic, where phantasies are produced by the emergence of the consciousness, and the social, where fantasies are the production of nineteenth-century individualism. Chapters run from the classical period to the twentieth century, each focusing on a local reading of how fantasy acts as a strategy to contain or exploit specific historical and cultural moments. A wide variety of sites are investigated including the feminization of the wild west, originary and maternal spaces, highwaywomen, financial credit, and the ideal home. Multiple genres containing fantasy are explored, ranging from ghost stories to feminist utopias.Aids to the reader include an introduction summarising recent discussions of fantasy, illustrations dealing with visual fantasies, and an annotated bibliography. The new research presented here will be of great interest to academics and students in literature, history and cultural studies departments who are working in the field of the historical development of concepts of fantasy, cultural opposition, and the imbrication of politics and modes of representation.
