A thorough evaluation of the efficacy of an after-school child care program in providing quality care. In recent years, a host of long-term trends - including an increase in the number of working parents, a rise in violent incidents involving children, and a move toward academic accountability - have led the American public to pay increasing heed to how and where their children spend their time after school. In response to these growing concerns, the past decade has seen a steady increase in the number of programs devoted to after-school care. Yet this proliferation of after-school programs has brought with it a concomitant need for sound program evaluation. Accordingly, this report summarizes RAND's effort to gauge the effectiveness of Stone Soup Child Care Programs, a nonprofit organization that administers school-based after-school care to children throughout California. In pursuit of its goal, RAND undertook three tasks: a thorough review of the literature, carried out to identify relevant "best practices"; the development and implementation of a data collection tool designed to measure Stone Soup's adherence to such practices; and a thoroughgoing analysis of the data compiled.After collecting extensive data from Stone Soup's central office and site supervisors, RAND concluded that, on average, Stone Soup does a competent job of adhering to good practices. At the same time, however, RAND's synthesis of the literature revealed a paucity of reliable studies on what practices constitute the provision of quality care. More research must therefore be conducted to better identify sound management practices in the critical arena of after-school care. The tool is included in the report to be useful for practitioners or funding organizations interested in evaluating how well after-school care programs are adhering to currently recognized practices. Does literature merely represent cognitive processes, or can it enhance, parallel, or reassess the scientific study of the mind? Beckett and the Cognitive Method argues that Samuel Beckett's narrative work, rather than just expressing or rendering mental states, inaugurates an exploratory use of narrative as an introspective modeling technology. Through a detailed analysis of Beckett's entire corpus and published volumes of letters, this book argues that Beckett pioneered a new method of writing to construct (in a mode analogous to scientific inquiry) models for the exploration of core laws, processes, and dynamics in the human mind. Marco Bernini integrates frameworks from contemporary narrative theory, cognitive sciences, phenomenology, and philosophy of mind to make a case for Beckett's modeling practice. Bernini demonstrates how this modeling applies to a vast array of processes including the (narrative) illusion of a sense of self, the dialogic interaction with memories and felt presences, the synesthetic nature of inner experience and mental imagery, the role of moods and emotions as cognitive drives, and the emergent quality of consciousness. Beckett and the Cognitive Method also reflects on how Beckett's fictional cognitive models are transformed into reading, auditory, or spectatorial experiences generating through narrative devices insights on what the sciences can only discursively report. As such, Bernini argues that literature should be considered a proper exploration of the mind, with its own tools and models for cognitive inquiry.

To commemorate the occasion, this collection brings together twenty-three leading international Beckett scholars from ten countries, who take on the centenary challenge of "revolving it all": that is, going "back to Beckett"-the title of an earlier study by critic Ruby Cohn, to whom the book is dedicated-in order to rethink traditional readings and theories; provide new contexts and associations; and reassess his impact on the modern imagination and legacy to future generations. Beckett and Badiou offers a provocative new reading of Samuel Beckett's work on the basis of a full, critical account of the thought of Alain Badiou. Badiou is the most eminent of contemporary French philosophers. His devotion to Beckett's work has been lifelong. Yet for Badiou philosophy must be integrally affirmative, whilst Beckett apparently commits his art to a work of negation. Beckett and Badiou explores the coherences, contradictions, and extreme complexities of the intellectual relationship between the two oeuvres. It examines Badiou's philosophy of being, the event, truth, and the subject and the importance of mathematics within his system. It considers the major features of his politics, ethics, and aesthetics and provides an explanation, interpretation, critique, and radical revision of his work on Beckett. It argues that, once revised, Badiou's version of Beckett offers an extraordinarily powerful tool for understanding his work. Badiou and Beckett are instances of a vestigial or melancholic modernism; that is, in the teeth of a contemporary culture that dreams ever more ambitiously of plenitude, they commit themselves to a rigorous concept of limit and intermittency. Truth and value are occasional and rare. It is seldom that the chance event arrives to disturb the inertia of the world. For Badiou, however, it is the event and its consequences alone that matter. Beckett rather insists on the common experience of intermittency as destitution. His art is a series of limit-figures, exquisitely subtle and nuanced forms for a world whose state of seemingly rigid paralysis is also always volatile, delicately balanced.
