Benedetto Croce: Philosopher Of Art And Literary Critic is a book written by Gian Napoleone Giordano Orsini that provides a comprehensive overview of the life and work of Benedetto Croce, one of the most influential Italian philosophers of the 20th century. Croce was known for his contributions to aesthetics, literary criticism, and political theory, and this book explores his ideas and legacy in detail. The book begins with a biographical sketch of Croce, tracing his upbringing and education, his early career as a journalist and politician, and his eventual emergence as a leading intellectual figure in Italy. It then delves into his philosophical ideas, including his theories of art and literature, his views on historicism and idealism, and his critiques of fascism and other political ideologies.Throughout the book, Orsini offers a nuanced and insightful analysis of Croce's ideas, situating them within the broader context of European philosophy and intellectual history. He also draws on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, including Croce's own writings, to provide a rich and detailed portrait of this complex and influential thinker.Overall, Benedetto Croce: Philosopher Of Art And Literary Critic is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history of Italian philosophy, aesthetics, and literary criticism, as well as for those seeking a deeper understanding of the intellectual currents that shaped modern Europe. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Benedetto Croce and Italian Fascism

Benedetto Croce and Italian Fascism

Fabio Rizi

Benedetto Croce and Italian Fascism provides a unique analysis of the political life of the major Italian philosopher and literary figure Benedetto Croce (1866-1952). Relying on a range of resources rarely used before in Croce studies – including police documents, archival materials, and the private edition of Croce's diaries, the Taccuini, published in recent years – Fabio Rizi paints an evocative picture of Croce in the fascist era. Rizi reconsiders Croce's contribution to the struggle against fascism, and demonstrates that Croce's anti-fascist resistance was not passive, as most critics have argued, but rather active in both the political and cultural arenas. Throughout the book, he shows the interplay between Croce's intellectual activity and the political events of the time. His extensive research reveals Croce's own close contact with the key players of the underground movements, and the fact that the fascist authorities regarded Croce as an enemy of the regime. Tracing Croce's life from his birth in 1866 to his death in 1952, this elegant biography sustains a consistent scope throughout: to clarify former misunderstandings and to better appreciate Croce's contributions to the cause of freedom. Well-documented and well-written, Benedetto Croce and Italian Fascism offers a critical and engaging contribution to Croce studies.
Benedetto Croce and the Birth of the Italian Republic, 1943-1952
As president of the Italian Liberal Party, Benedetto Croce was one of the most influential intellectuals involved in Italian public affairs after the fall of Mussolini. Placing Croce at the centre of historical events between 1943 and 1952, this book details his participation in Italy’s political life, and his major contributions to the rebirth of Italian democracy. Drawing on a great amount of primary material, including Croce’s political speeches, correspondences, diaries, and official documents from post-war Italy, this book illuminates the dynamic and progressive nature of Croce’s liberalism and the shortcomings of the old Liberal leaders. Providing a year-by-year account of Croce’s initiatives, author Fabio Fernando Rizi fills the gap in Croce’s biography, covering aspects of his public life often neglected, misinterpreted, or altogether ignored, and restores his standing among the founding fathers of modern Italy.

Benedetto Croce was the foremost Italian philosopher of the first half of the twentieth century and his influence extended to every aspect of intellectual life in Italy. He played a significant, sometimes crucial, role in Italian politics, and his writing commanded attention throughout Europe, America, and beyond. In the last few years his contribution to various disciplines has been undergoing a re-evaluation in Italy. This collection continues that reassessment with an English-speaking audience in mind. The book is a collection of essays by scholars from various disciplines - philosophy, history, literature, and art history - covering the broad scope of Croce's life and work, from his early writings on local Neopolitan history in the 1890s to his activity as a public figure before and after the Second World War. In this much-needed addition to contemporary criticism one senses the depth and originality of his thought in the areas of history, national politics, rhetoric, and art. Including the first English-language discussion of Taccuini di lavoro, Croce's working diary, this is the first volume in English that provides a critical survey of Croce's major works and ideas, as well as fresh interpretations from a variety of contemporary points of view.
