This is a story about a young man, who spent his high school summer vacation working on the Mt. Hood National Forest in 1945. He doesn¡¯t want to be drafted into an Army¡ slated to invade Japan, and if he is --- he doesn¡¯t want to do it, without first tasting some of the sweet mysteries of life and love. In the meantime, he finds dangers, real and imagined: in fighting forest fires, in trying to understand the opposite sex, and coping with the antics of his fellow crew members --- the REDHATs.

Richard M. Weaver (1910-1963) was one of the leading rhetoricians of the 1950s, whose philosophical and pedagogical writings helped revitalize interest in rhetoric. His rhetorical contributions are difficult to separate from his conservative stances on social and political issues; and, indeed, he espoused the cultural role of rhetoric, conceiving of his intellectual task as one of reinventing a philosophical conservatism and employing rhetorical theory to oppose liberalism and modernism. Today, his politics would be viewed as extreme by liberals, feminists, and civil libertarians; on the other hand, his theories laid the philosophical groundwork for contemporary American political conservatism, and his argumentation on a number of social issues remains pertinent. This first full-length study of Weaver examines the relationship between his rhetorical theory and his cultural views, focusing on the rhetorical insights---for instance, his conception of language as sermonic, its function being to influence others to think and act according to the speaker's moral precepts and, ideally, to convey the abiding truth of a culture. Authors Duffy and Jacobi advance the idea that Weaver was at his best as an epideictic rhetor, engaged in the celebration of abstract values, and at his worst as a forensic rhetor, pleading conservative causes with no more than the pretense of impartiality. Based largely on primary materials but with adroit application of previous criticism, this work will be valuable for a wide range of research specialties in rhetoric and public address.
Health communication research examines the role of communication in health professional/client relationships and in promoting patient adherence, the flow of information within and between health organizations, the design and effectiveness of health information for various audiences and the planning and evaluation of health care policy. Other important areas treated in this book are cultural and social factors influencing health communication, ethical issues effecting communication, and education in communication within medical schools. Medical students, physicians, policy makers, students and faculty in communications and sociology, as well as social services professionals should find this reference an important tool.
America's Trade Follies controversially argues that the global political economy is hardening into regional blocs, in North America, Latin America, Europe and the Asia Pacific, organized around a powerful economic base and suspicious of each other. Bernard K. Gordon's masterful analysis shows that this division threatens American prosperity by limiting US access to the world's richest and largest markets, and endangers US security by dividing the globe along economic and political lines. Provocative, original and stimulating this book is essential reading for all those interested in American politics, trade and international political economy.
Circular Villages of the Monongahela Tradition

This book offers a comprehensive analysis of circular village forms. Between A.D. 1000 and 1635, the inhabitants of southwestern Pennsylvania and portions of adjacent states - known to archaeologists as the Monongahela Culture or Tradition - began to regularly reside in ring-shaped village settlements. These circular settlements consisted of dwellings around a central plaza. A cross-cultural and cross-temporal review of archaeological, ethnohistorical, and ethnographic cases demonstrates that this settlement form appeared repeatedly and independently worldwide, including throughout portions of the Eastern Woodlands, among the Plains Indians, and in Central and South America. Specific archaeological cases are drawn from Somerset County, Pennsylvania, which has the largest number of completely excavated Monongahela villages. Most of these villages, excavated in the 1930s as federal relief projects, were recently dated. Full analysis of the extensive excavations reveals not only the geometric architectural patterning of the villages, but enables an analysis of the social groupings, population estimates, and economic status of residents that inhabited the circular villages. Circular patterning can be revealed at less fully excavated archaeological sites. Focused test excavations can help confirm circular village plans without extensive and destructive excavations.
Some might say Bernard Bookman has been a very lucky man, but as we read his story, we see he made his own luck, working hard while managing to remain devoted to his family. He is, indeed, as the editor of this lively and interesting volume found, "a self-made man who has found the important things in life." A glance at a few of the chapter titles offers a sense of the twists and turns his path has taken: A Montreal Childhood; Through the Gateway to the North; Business School and Babies; Out of Academia, into Consulting; The Girls Grew Up in Florida. The book's title-When You Reach a Fork in the Road, Take It-indicates something of the spirit that is part of the foundation of this admirable man's life and character: get out there and do what there is to be done and keep a lighthearted attitude handy. In many ways, Bookman has had a dream of a life: rewarding and significant work, a wonderful and loving family, strong relationships, and lots of fun. And he continues to move forward, enjoying his family and his life and watching the road ahead for opportunities.

Since the death of the Prophet Mohammad sectarian violence has existed in the Middle East. This monograph details the history of the Sunni - Shia split and explains the origins of the violence still present today. This conflict presents opportunities to Western governments and militaries to explore in the operational and strategic realms. Two dissimilar case studies, Yemen and Syria, are used to recommend engagements to exploit these opportunities. Both of these countries have existing or potential sectarian violence and clear tensions between the Sunni - Shia sects. Yemen has a sectarian insurgency led primarily by members of the Zaydi Tribe who were the former ruling party. The Shia Zaydi feel marginalized and targeted by Sunni extremists and al-Qaeda elements with-in Yemen. Western militaries must use the advisors already engaged in Yemen to convince the GoY to initiate the amnesty, reconciliation, and reintegration process in Yemen. This will undermine al-Qaeda initiatives in Yemen and, hopefully, build a bond between Sunnis and Shias creating a stronger, more stable governance structure. Syria is governed by a Shia minority. Western governments' isolationist policies toward Syria have pushed the Syrian minority government to become overly reliant on Iran. With the introduction of a new American Ambassador to Syria operational opportunities are present that have not existed in many years. Military to military exchanges, foreign military sales, and theater security cooperation exercises are ways western militaries can begin to exert influence in a country with which the American government and military has had little or no interaction. Leveraging a Sunni majority could help the United States to apply its national power in a positive way to shape the Shia minority government and drive a wedge between Syria and Iran.
