Voting is an examination of the factors that make people vote the way they do. Based on the famous Elmira Study, carried out by a team of skilled social scientists during the 1948 presidential campaign, it shows how voting is affected by social class, religious background, family loyalties, on-the-job relationships, local pressure groups, mass communication media, and other factors. Still highly relevant, Voting is one of the most frequently cited books in the field of voting behavior.
This monograph arose from lectures at the University of Oklahoma on topics related to linear algebra over commutative rings. It provides an introduction of matrix theory over commutative rings. The monograph discusses the structure theory of a projective module.

The gratifying response to Counterexamples in analysis (CEA) was followed, when the book went out of print, by expressions of dismay from those who were unable to acquire it. The connection of the present volume with CEA is clear, although the sights here are set higher. In the quarter-century since the appearance of CEA, mathematical education has taken some large steps reflected in both the undergraduate and graduate curricula. What was once taken as very new, remote, or arcane is now a well-established part of mathematical study and discourse. Consequently the approach here is designed to match the observed progress. The contents are intended to provide graduate and ad vanced undergraduate students as well as the general mathematical public with a modern treatment of some theorems and examples that constitute a rounding out and elaboration of the standard parts of algebra, analysis, geometry, logic, probability, set theory, and topology. The items included are presented in the spirit of a conversation among mathematicians who know the language but are interested in some of the ramifications of the subjects with which they routinely deal. Although such an approach might be construed as demanding, there is an extensive GLOSSARY jlNDEX where all but the most familiar notions are clearly defined and explained. The object ofthe body of the text is more to enhance what the reader already knows than to review definitions and notations that have become part of every mathematician's working context.
In the pages that follow there are: A. A revised and enlarged version of Problems in analysis (PIA) . (All typographical, stylistic, and mathematical errors in PIA and known to the writer have been corrected.) B. A new section COMPLEX ANALYSIS containing problems distributed among many of the principal topics in the theory of functions of a complex variable. C. A total of 878 problems and their solutions. D. An enlarged Index/Glossary and an enlarged Symbol List. Notational and terminological conventions are to be found for the most part under Conventions at the beginnings of the chapters. Spe cial items not included in Conventions are completely explained in the Index/Glossary. The audience to which the current book is addressed differs little from the audience for PIA. The background of the reader is assumed to include a knowledge of the basic principles and theorems in real and complex analysis as those subjects are currently viewed. The aim of the problems is to sharpen and deepenthe understanding of the mechanisms that underlie modern analysis. I thank Springer-Verlag for its interest in and support of this project. These counterexamples, arranged according to difficulty or sophistication, deal mostly with the part of analysis known as "real variables," starting at the level of calculus. The first half of the book concerns functions of a real variable; topics include the real number system, functions and limits, differentiation, Riemann integration, sequences, infinite series, uniform convergence, and sets and measure on the real axis. The second half, encompassing higher dimensions, examines functions of two variables, plane sets, area, metric and topological spaces, and function spaces. This volume contains much that will prove suitable for students who have not yet completed a first course in calculus, and ample material of interest to more advanced students of analysis as well as graduate students. 12 figures. Not only do the two writers discussed in this book both display exceptional artistic ability to express their thoughts in a foreign language (neither English in Vladimir Nabokov's case, nor French in Tahar Ben Jelloun's, is the author's native tongue) but these two writers share many other concerns. Both deal with the theme of alienation in its various manifestations: immigration; the moral solitude of common or upright individuals; madness and other irrational behaviors; and women's condition in society. The quest for happiness is at the core of Nabokov's and Ben Jelloun's respective works, but the solutions proposed by these two novelists highlight important differences regarding their views of life.
