Bernard V. Bothmer

sidottu
The articles of Bernard V. Bothmer are the most comprehensive collection of writings on Egyptian art history. They are introduced by T.D.H. James, former Keeper, Egyptian Collection, The British Museum, and Rita Freed, Curator of Ancient Egyptian, Nubian and Near Eastern Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and address several themes, such as the reappraisal of old theories to gain new insights, the contextual interpretation of Egyptian art to determine nuance and meaning, and stylistic analysis. Topics covered range in date from the origins of ancient Egypt to its decline in the Roman period. The audience for the work includes professional scholars, students and museum curators, particularly in Europe, where Bothmer has a wide following. Bothmer in his career sought out both scholarly and lay audiences, and his writings have the same dual purpose.
Ambassador Frederic Sackett and the Collapse of the Weimar Republic, 1930–1933
This book details a striking political relationship between American Ambassador Frederic Sackett and German Chancellor Heinrich Brüning and their attempts to save the Weimar Republic, achieve German nationalist goals, and thwart Adolf Hitler's drive to power. Sackett believed that financial policy was at the heart of German problems and, unless resolved, could be the basis for Hitler's success. Very early in his tenure in Berlin, Sackett saw Hitler and the Nazis as a serious danger to the Weimar Republic and to peace in Europe. The American thought that misrule by incompetent and inefficient Nazis would pave the way for a communist state. Although at first he saw the Nazis as harbingers of worse to come, in time he came to see Hitler as the real threat to democracy in Germany.

Comprehensive in its approach yet written in plain language, "The Moral Bond of Community" offers a biblically-based concept of Christian justice that can be applied to moral questions in everyday life. Brady examines four forms of Christian moral discourse - narrative, prophetic, ethical, and policy - and shows how each contributes to a fuller understanding of Christian morality.
