B.C.L. Natorp (1774-1846) ist der - zu Unrecht vergessene - Reformer des westfalischen Volksschul- und Lehrerbildungswesens. Gefordert u.a. von L. von Vincke und W. von Humboldt, reformierte er das Schulwesen der Mark Brandenburg, ab 1816 das der Provinz Westfalen. Prinzip war ihm dabei die gleichzeitige und -wertige Forderung des Schul- und Kirchenwesens, bei aller angestrebten und geachteten Selbstandigkeit der Schulen. In einer fur ihn typischen Verbindung von theologischem Denken, padagogischem Engagement und reger publizistischer Tatigkeit fuhrte er die Reformen zu einer ersten Hohe, bis die preussische Reaktion weitere Reformen erstickte. Dennoch waren Natorps Verdienste allgemein anerkannt: Geehrt wurde Natorp durch die Ehrendoktorwurde der Theologie, den preussischen Rother Adler Orden II. Klasse und das Amt des Vizegeneralsuperintendenten fur Westfalen. Noch heute sind seine Gedanken von bestechender Aktualitat."
