Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) is the most influential painter of the German Reformation. In collaboration with Martin Luther (1483-1546), Cranach produced innovative paintings which made the complex ideas of Lutheran Christianity understandable to a wide range of viewers and inspired later generations of artists. Despite Cranach's crucial role as an interpreter of Lutheran ideas, his Reformation paintings remain unfamiliar to many American scholars. Lucas Cranach the Elder: Art and Devotion of the German Reformation presents Cranach's Reformation painting to a broader audience and explains the pictorial strategies Cranach devised to clarify and interpret Lutheran thought. For specialists in Reformation history, this study offers an interpretation of Cranach's art as an agent of religious change. For historians and students of Renaissance art, this study explores the defining work of a major sixteenth-century artist. The broad implications of the Reformation and Cranach's role in transforming religious art make this study suitable for readers with a general interest in history, religion, or art history.

Every human being longs to know where they came from...to know familial personality traits, talents, abilities and short comings, health issues, etc. This book is written to reveal the importance of a family tree revealing secrets in the attic found by a great grand daughter long after death of the grandmother. Found in the attic are written poems, stories, rough drafts. Some are well written and some appear as junk but each shows information a person would never talk to anyone about. This attic was in the grandmother's mind where secrets, hurts, pains, goals, misuses, hopes, joys are stored memories. Until one's attic is found, such person is never fully understood or known, which is after death. It becomes evident that the trunk of the family tree is the grandmother and the roots of that tree pass on to generations that follow. This is why the children should glean and write down many personal conversations with the elders in a family instead of avoiding their company. The author's hope is that her great granddaughter will find her attic and learn the great grandmother she never knew, a grandmother who loved her, prayed for her.

"Absorbing...poignant, often heartbreaking...Schwarz is a vivid storyteller." -The New York Times Book Review The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Drowning Ruth vividly evokes the perennially fascinating true crime love affair of Bonnie and Clyde in this suspenseful, gorgeously detailed fictional portrait of Bonnie Parker, one of America's most enigmatic women.Born in a small town in the desolate reaches of western Texas and shaped by her girlhood in an industrial wasteland on the outskirts of Dallas, Bonnie Parker was a natural performer and a star student. She dreamed of being a movie star or a singer or a poet. But her dramatic nature, contorted by her limited opportunities and her overwhelming love for Clyde Barrow, pushed her into a course from which there was no escape but death. Infusing the psychological acuity of literary fiction with the relentless pacing of a thriller, Bonnie follows Bonnie from her bright, promising youth to her final month of shoot-outs, kidnappings, and desperate car chases through America's hinterland in the grip of the Great Depression, as the noose of the law tightened around her. Enriched by Christina Schwarz's extensive research in the footsteps of Bonnie and Clyde and written with her powerful sense of place and time, Bonnie is a plaintive and page-turning account of a woman destroyed by a lethal combination of longing and love.

Bonnie's story begins at the commencement of her eighth-grade school year in 1961. But in so many ways, hers is a story of American youths during any time in our history, when young people struggle against the cruelty of their own peers, the difficulty of rapid sexual and physical growth and the even greater difficulty of holding onto ideals, while surmounting the hypocrisy of their elders. Bonnie is uprooted from her Bronx home at thirteen, taken from her violin instructor and from a city with enormous cultural advantages for any boy or girl with bus fare to Carnegie Hall or the Met Museum. She finds herself isolated in a new split-level, a new school, and new clothes, bereft of any connection to the art and culture that she loves. She loses her mother from an auto accident, but makes one good friend in a budding writer who with her beloved father, a disabled city fireman, helps her overcome a teenage rape, raise a child from that pregnancy, and find a path toward life-sustaining self-expression.

Motivated by greed and sadism—or perhaps by poverty and boredom—star-crossed lovers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow set out on a series of robberies throughout the American Southwest, many of which ended in murder. Frustrated by the suffocating poverty of the Great Depression, they were especially eager to target their oppressors—banks, store owners, and at times, the police. Their numerous crimes triggered an FBI manhunt, but their Robin-Hood ethos made them heroes in the eyes of many, establishing their place as legends of American folklore. This objective volume paints a realistic picture of often-romanticized subject matter, as it explores the motivation and impact of two of the most notorious criminals in U.S. history. Bonnie and Clyde: we’ve been on a first name basis with them for almost a hundred years. Immortalised in movies, songs, and pop culture references, they are remembered mostly for their storied romance and tragic deaths. But what was life really like for Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker in the early 1930s? How did two dirt-poor teens from west Texas morph from vicious outlaws to legendary couple? And why? Award-winning author Karen Blumenthal devoted months to tracing the footsteps of Bonnie and Clyde, unearthing new information and debunking many persistent myths. The result is an impeccably researched, breathtaking nonfiction tale of love, car chases, kidnappings, and murder set against the backdrop of the Great Depression.
