A History of Non-Euclidean Geometry

A History of Non-Euclidean Geometry

Boris A. Rosenfeld

sidottu
The Russian edition of this book appeared in 1976 on the hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the historic day of February 23, 1826, when LobaeevskiI delivered his famous lecture on his discovery of non-Euclidean geometry. The importance of the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry goes far beyond the limits of geometry itself. It is safe to say that it was a turning point in the history of all mathematics. The scientific revolution of the seventeenth century marked the transition from "mathematics of constant magnitudes" to "mathematics of variable magnitudes. " During the seventies of the last century there occurred another scientific revolution. By that time mathematicians had become familiar with the ideas of non-Euclidean geometry and the algebraic ideas of group and field (all of which appeared at about the same time), and the (later) ideas of set theory. This gave rise to many geometries in addition to the Euclidean geometry previously regarded as the only conceivable possibility,to the arithmetics and algebras of many groups and fields in addition to the arith metic and algebra of real and complex numbers, and, finally, to new mathe matical systems, i. e. , sets furnished with various structures having no classical analogues. Thus in the 1870's there began a new mathematical era usually called, until the middle of the twentieth century, the era of modern mathe matics.

With humor, depth, and philosophical and historical insight, DNA reaches out to a wide range of readers with its graphic portrayal of a complicated science. Suitable for use in and out of the classroom, this volume covers DNA's many marvels, from its original discovery in 1869 to early-twentieth-century debates on the mechanisms of inheritance and the deeper nature of life's evolution and variety. Even readers who lack a background in science and philosophy will learn a tremendous amount from this engaging narrative. The book elucidates DNA's relationship to health and the cause and cure of disease. It also covers the creation of new life forms, nanomachines, and perspectives on crime detection, and considers the philosophical sources of classical Darwinian theory and recent, radical changes in the understanding of evolution itself. Already these developments have profoundly affected our notions about living things. Borin Van Loon's humorous illustrations recount the contributions of Gregor Mendel, Frederick Griffith, James Watson, and Francis Crick, among other biologists, scientists, and researchers, and vividly depict the modern controversies surrounding the Human Genome Project and cloning.

Light Pollution as a New Risk Factor for Human Breast and Prostate Cancers
Humans are diurnal organisms whose biological clock and temporal organization depend on natural light/dark cycles. Changes in the photoperiod are a signal for seasonal acclimatization of physiological and immune systems as well as behavioral patterns. The invention of electrical light bulbs created more opportunities for work and leisure. However, exposure to artificial light at night (LAN) affects our biological clock, and suppresses pineal melatonin (MLT) production. Among its other properties, MLT is an antioncogenic agent, and therefore its suppression increases the risks of developing breast and prostate cancers (BC&PC). To the best of our knowledge, this book is the first to address the linkage between light pollution and BC&PC in humans. It explains several state-of-the-art theories, linking light pollution with BC&PC. It also illustrates research hypotheses about health effects of light pollution using the results of animal models and population-based studies.

Diffuse Algorithms for Neural and Neuro-Fuzzy Networks: With Applications in Control Engineering and Signal Processing presents new approaches to training neural and neuro-fuzzy networks. This book is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 consists of plants models reviews, problems statements, and known results that are relevant to the subject matter of this book. Chapter 2 considers the RLS behavior on a finite interval. The theoretical results are illustrated by examples of solving problems of identification, control, and signal processing. Properties of the bias, the matrix of second-order moments and the normalized average squared error of the RLS algorithm on a finite time interval are studied in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 deals with the problem of multilayer neural and neuro-fuzzy networks training with simultaneous estimation of the hidden and output layers parameters. The theoretical results are illustrated with the examples of pattern recognition, identification of nonlinear static, and dynamic plants. Chapter 5 considers the estimation problem of the state and the parameters of the discrete dynamic plants in the absence of a priori statistical information about initial conditions or its incompletion. The Kalman filter and the extended Kalman filter diffuse analogues are obtained. Finally, Chapter 6 provides examples of the use of diffuse algorithms for solving problems in various engineering applications. This book is ideal for researchers and graduate students in control, signal processing, and machine learning.

Soliton Management in Periodic Systems

Soliton Management in Periodic Systems

Boris A. Malomed

sidottu
During the past ten years, there has been intensive development in theoretical and experimental research of solitons in periodic media. This book provides a unique and informative account of the state-of-the-art in the field. The volume opens with a review of the existence of robust solitary pulses in systems built as a periodic concatenation of very different elements. Among the most famous examples of this type of systems are the dispersion management in fiber-optic telecommunication links, and (more recently) photonic crystals. A number of other systems belonging to the same broad class of spatially periodic strongly inhomogeneous media (such as the split-step and tandem models) have recently been identified in nonlinear optics, and transmission of solitary pulses in them was investigated in detail. Similar soliton dynamics occurs in temporal-domain counterparts of such systems, where they are subject to strong time-periodic modulation (for instance, the Feshbach-resonance management in Bose-Einstein condensates). Basis results obtained for all these systems are reviewed in the book. This timely work will serve as a useful resource for the soliton community.

This book develops a theory that can be viewed as a noncommutative counterpart of the following topics: dynamical systems in general and integrable systems in particular; Hamiltonian formalism; variational calculus, both in continuous space and discrete. The text is self-contained and includes a large number of exercises. Many different specific models are analyzed extensively and motivations for the new notions are provided in this book.

Environment, Place, and Growth

Boris A. Portnov

EDWARD ELGAR PUBLISHING LTD
2025
sidottu
This innovative book explores how the location of a city affects its growth. Boris A. Portnov discusses how an urban location can be understood as a package of attributes in which several essential components must be present to ensure successful development. The author defines the collection of key attributes, including varying geographical elements and environmental characteristics, as a ‘location package’ (LP) and details how the synergy of the LP of a city can make it an ideal place to live. He outlines the qualities that are considered essential for an urban location, such as favourable climate, distance from environmental hazards, attractive scenery and limited long distance commuting. The chapters delve into detailed case studies that assess the location package of major cities of the world, including New York, Tokyo, and Istanbul. The book also examines the locational attributes of cities of the past that are associated with their survival in the modern day, such as proximity to freshwater sources, protected areas, and fertile agricultural land.Students and scholars of urban geography, population studies, and regional studies will greatly benefit from this discerning book. It is also an essential resource for practitioners and policymakers in urban and regional planning.

During the last 30 years, knowledge of the essential role that pyrrole structures play in the chemistry of living organisms, drug design, and the development of advanced materials has increased. Correspondingly, research on the diverse issues of synthetic, theoretical, and applied chemistry has snowballed. Devoted to the latest achievements of this field, Chemistry of Pyrroles covers the discovery and development of a novel, facile, and highly effective method for the construction of the pyrrole ring from ketones (ketoximes) and acetylene in superbase catalytic systems (Trofimov reaction). It provides cutting-edge details on the preparation of valuable but previously inaccessible pyrrole compounds. It includes approximately 1,000 structures of novel pyrrole compounds, their yields, and physical-chemical characteristics. The authors analyze conditions of typical syntheses, limitations of their applicability, and possibility of vinyl chloride or dichloroethane application instead of acetylene. They examine chemical engineering aspects of the first synthesis of tetrahydroindole and indole from commercially available oxime of cyclohexanone and acetylene. In addition, the book discusses new facets of pyrroles and N-vinyl pyrroles reactivity in the reactions with the participation of both the pyrrole ring and N-vinyl groups. The book provides condensed, clear-cut information on novel syntheses of substituted pyrroles as key structural units of living matter (chlorophyll and hemoglobin), pharmaceuticals, and monomers for optoelectronic materials. It includes tables that provide references to original works, forming a guide to a variety of the reactions and synthesized compounds discussed. With coverage of the broad range of pyrrole chemistry and methods for their synthesis, it provides both a theoretical and an experimental basis for drug design.

Pseudocarcinoma of the Skin

Pseudocarcinoma of the Skin

Among the circumstances that may cause a too late or erroneous diagnosis of skin cancer, a most important one is the failure to distinguish a true squamous cell carcinoma of the skin from an atypical, but benign, epidermal hyperplasia which closely mimics the carcinoma clinically and particularly histologically - so-called pseudoepitheliomatous or pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia. Although there are many publications describing in detail the histologic features of pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasias which arise in various dermatoses or skin tumors, this book appears to be the first attempt to cover the whole subject of pseudocarcinomatous epidermal hyperplasia by considering it not only in its clinical and histopathologic aspects, but also from cytophysiologic and cytogen etic points of view, in relation to squamous cell carcinoma. On the basis of a review of the available literature and of my own correlative clinical, histopathologic, cytophysiologic, and cytogenetic investigations in patients and experimental animals, I propose a comprehensive set of criteria of difference and similarity between pseudocarcinoma and true carcinoma of the skin. Hopefully, these criteria will be found useful by physicians in the differential diagnosis between these conditions in cases of doubt and may likewise provide a stimulus to researchers for deliberation. I also hope that this monograph, which is a translation of a revised version of the text originally published in Russian in 1980, will serve our common cause of the fight against cancer. I welcome suggestions regarding the choice and treatment of the material included in the book.
