Most people believe that killing someone, while generally morally wrong, can in some cases be a permissible act. Most people similarly believe that war, while awful, can be justified. Bradley Jay Strawser examines a set of related moral issues in war: when it is permissible to kill in defense of others; what moral responsibility would be required to be liable for such defensive killing; how that permission can extend to whole groups of people; and, lastly, what values undergird the permissibility of that defense, such as individual autonomy. Strawser argues for a rights-based account of permissible defensive harm and an 'evidence-relative' basis for the holding those responsible. His view is that in order to be properly responsible for an unjust harm to be justifiably killed, one must act wrongly according to the evidence available to them. Extending this view, Strawser explores how such a rights-based model can make sense of the wide-spread destructive harms of war. He endorses a revisionist approach to just war theory and argues in its defense; and he also shows how his evidence-relative account supports revisionist just war theory by better grounding it in the real world of modern warfare. Lastly, he offers a new proposal for how targeting in war could better align with respect for the rights of individual persons, and demonstrate how revisionist just war theory-and any rights-respecting just war account more broadly-could conceivably work in practical ways.

We live in a world designed around our own version of reality, a reality established by our own understanding of meaning, sense and feeling, all of which have been crafted by our personal experiences and mould the way we witness the world. It is inherently important to human understanding, however, that as social creatures we attempt to perceive and recognise the worlds of others and with that comes the understanding of others emotions, senses and experiences. This is known as empathy. Instead of simply feeling remorseful or sympathetic towards someone, empathy is the attempt to truly understand the emotions of that person by relating it to the only thing we can, our own experiences. But this is not a skill everyone possesses and, in that essence, experiencing empathy is almost like a modern-day superpower that not every human being experiences, but with a little guidance this skill can be gained and mastered like any other and used to help better your daily life. But how would one do that? Why do we empathise? What is the difference between experiencing empathy and being an Empath? What is an Empath? And how does it differ from mere intuition? This book explores the importance of empathy, the diverse world of the Empath and how to awaken the empathetic spirit within yourself to better gain control of your fears, emotions and relationships. In questioning the ways in which learning to understand the feelings of others helps us better understand our own and, through discussing the psychological and mystical components of being and becoming an Empath, this book explores the ways to awaken such a gift within yourself and use it to your advantage both personally and professionally with the use of proven provocation techniques, helping you to gain the title of a true Empath.

Stoicism is often misunderstood merely as enduring hardship without complaint, but this is a modern misconception. The ancient stoics had a much more complex view of life and the world. In "Stoicism" we'll look at the full story, including: The history of the ancient stoics The nature of good and evil, virtue and vice The difference between the things we can control and the things we can't Living in the present while dealing with fears of the future Logic and practical reasoning Stoicisms role in the development of a new state of mind Stoicisms role in the discovery of a new consciousness How to hold to ancient beliefs in a modern society We all want to live a good life. We want to do our part, enjoy life, and do some good in the world. It sounds simple-and in some sense it is-but tying the big picture to everyday life is often hard. We're bombarded with images and stories about people who are more beautiful than us, richer than us, more famous than us. We face a world of human frailties-ours and others-that often make life difficult and unpleasant. But we get to decide who we are. We get to decide how we're going to look at our mistakes. We get to decide how we're going to look at the insults and injuries others inflict upon us. We get to decide what is important and what is not. In this book, I explain how Stoicism is far richer and deeper than simply enduring hardship without complaint and provides a roadmap for applying classic Stoic principles in a modern world. My comprehensive guide is an exploration of Stoicism in clear and common language suitable for non-academic audiences, while also providing a practical guide for living your best life. In it, you'll learn how to prioritize the things you can control. You'll learn how to acknowledge insult, injury, and your own past mistakes without letting them dictate your actions. The guide will help you approach life with confidence and achieve a sense of tranquility in what can often be a hectic and disorienting world. This book will help you be the best version of yourself.

Traditions in World Cinema brings together a colorful and wide ranging collection of world cinematic traditions—national, regional, and global—all of which are in need of introduction, investigation and, in some cases, critical reassessment. The movements described range from well-known traditions such as German expressionism, Italian neorealism, French, British, and Czech new wave, and new Hollywood cinema to those of emerging significance, such as Danish Dogma, postcommunist cinema, Brazilian post–Cinema Novo, new Argentine cinema, pre-independence African film traditions, Israeli persecution films, new Iranian cinema, Hindi film songs, Chinese wenyi pian melodrama, Japanese horror, and global found-footage cinema. The essays, all written by recognized experts in the field, are jargon free and accessible to both general readers and students. In addition, each chapter is followed by a list of suggested films and readings, offering readers pathways to further viewing and study.Bringing fresh insights to those movements that have provided significant and noteworthy alternatives to Hollywood, this book is an essential introduction to the rich diversity of world cinema.
A compelling study of the military career of five-star general Omar Bradley details his rise to command of the U.S. 12th Army Group in the European theater of World War II, gifts as as a tactician, service as a mentor for younger officers, transformation of the VA into a model government agency, and key legacy for modern military service. 50,000 first printing.
Dubbed by the World War II press as "The G.I. General" because of his close identification with his men, Omar Bradley rose to command the largest exclusively American field command in U.S. history during the European Campaign. Alan Axelrod applies his signature insight and compelling prose to the life, strategy and legacy of the general who remains the model for all commanders today as the man who revolutionized the National Guard, shaped the U.S. army's focus on the individual soldier, and emphasized cooperation and coordination among the military services.
