A compact anthology of oriental verse forms accompanied by miscellaneous other short form poems of a general style and nature, interspersed with a number of small vignettes of drawings and prints in other media created by the writer and poet himself over a similar timespan to the poems, though not directly illustrative of any particular poems.
A collected anthology of the author's poetic works in an extensive range of genres, accompanied by selected drawings and prints by the author, executed during the corresponding years of the poems' executions. Love, life and death, along with social, political, philosophical and natural world observations underscore many of the poems, which are presented as they chronologically occurred. The artworks are not illustrative but simply accompany the poems; generally in no specific order but the works carry accompanying texts on the media used and the dates of execution.

The welfare state has, over the past forty years, come under increasing attack from liberals who consider comprehensive welfare provision inimical to liberalism. Yet, many of the architects of the post-World War II welfare states were liberals, many of whom were economists as much as socialists. Liberalism and the Welfare State investigates the thinking of liberal economists about welfare, focusing on Britain, Germany and Japan, each of which had a different tradition of economic thinking and different institutions for welfare provision. This volume explores the early history of welfare thinking from the British New Liberals of the early twentieth century, German Ordoliberals and post-war Japanese Liberal economists. It delves into arguments about neoliberalism under British Conservative and New Labour governments, after German reunification, and under Koizumi in Japan. Given the importance of both international policy collaboration and international networks of neoliberal economists, this volume also explores neoliberal ideas on federalism and the responses of neoliberal think tanks to the global financial crisis. Liberalism and the Welfare State provides a comparative analysis of economists' attitudes to the welfare state. Notwithstanding the differences, in each country support emerged very early on for social minimum standards, but strong disagreements within each country quickly developed. The result was divergence, as the debates shaped different welfare regimes. More recently, the strong impact of efficiency related critiques of welfare regimes has crowded out more nuanced and complex discussions of the past. This volume provides a reminder that neither liberalism nor economic ideas in general are inimical to well-designed welfare provision. The ongoing debate on economics and welfare can be greatly improved by way of stronger consideration of different lineages of both liberal and neoliberal lines of economic thought.
Many scholars have touched tangentially on the topic of affectation in Hamlet, but none have yet offered an adequate rhetorical analysis of Shakespeare’s treatment of the concept. Making the claim that affectation is an anomalous affective malady that afflicts nearly everyone in the play, Bradley Buchanan explores the many manifestations of affectation at the court of Elsinore in light of classical rhetorical theory, as well as in the broader context of early modern intellectual culture. Buchanan shows that the special twist in Shakespeare’s depictions of affectation lies in the catachrestic abuse of the older English word “affection” by Hamlet himself (among other characters) to signify the new, foreign concept of affectation. This disturbing conflation of two opposing conditions encapsulates Hamlet’s much-discussed problem: he cannot tell the difference between genuine affection and deceptive affectation. Drawing on a growing field of scholarship engaged in the study of rhetoric in early modern English texts, Indict the Author of Affection explores how Shakespeare’s extensive and self-conscious use of catachresis involves not only far-fetched metaphors but subversive new meanings that can infect familiar words, dramatizing his characters’ psychological conflicts and producing a rich but treacherous instability in language itself.Indict the Author of Affection brings to Hamlet a groundbreaking analysis engaged with the complex, wide-ranging, and contentious discourse concerning affectation as a rhetorical, moral, and aesthetic issue.

This book is the first systematic examination of the international eugenics movement, beginning with its origins in the late Victorian period and continuing through the period of 'crypto-eugenics', as the eugenicists themselves dubbed it, after the Second World War and through the 1990s. It dramatically revises the scholarly understanding of the eugenics movement in Britain, Germany, and the United States, but also moves beyond this axis to consider the impact of eugenic ideas on imperial policy and within the colonial world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By exploring financial ties between international organisations and utilizing new archival sources such as the Pitt-Rivers correspondence, the author is able to show how and why the eugenics movement was able to command such high levels of support from both scientific practitioners and government officials in the years before the Second World War. It reveals the full relationship between leading eugenicists in Britain and the United States to Adolf Hitler's government in the mid to late 1930s, a relationship that had previously been the subject of much scholarly speculation. It thus makes major contributions to the understanding of twentieth century international relations, the interwar period, and the history of modern biology more generally.
George Pitt-Rivers began his career as one of Britain’s most promising young anthropologists, conducting research in the South Pacific and publishing articles in the country’s leading academic journals. With a museum in Oxford bearing his family name, Pitt-Rivers appeared to be on track for a sterling academic career that might even have matched that of his grandfather, one of the most prominent archaeologists of his day.By the early 1930s, however, Pitt-Rivers had turned from his academic work to politics. Writing a series of books attacking international communism and praising the ideas of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, Pitt-Rivers fell into the circles of the anti-Semitic far right. In 1937 he attended the Nuremberg Rally and personally met Adolf Hitler and other leading Nazis. With the outbreak of war in 1940 Pitt-Rivers was arrested and interned by the British government on the suspicion that he might harm the war effort by publicly sharing his views, effectively ending his academic career.This book traces the remarkable career of a man who might have been remembered as one of Britain's leading 20th century anthropologists but instead became involved in a far-right milieu that would result in his professional ruin and the relegation of most of his research to margins of scientific history. At the same time, his wider legacy would persist far beyond the academic sphere and can be found to the present day.
