The Politics of Autism

The Politics of Autism

Bryna Siegel

Oxford University Press Inc

sidottu
In 1994 the American Psychiatric Association published the groundbreaking diagnostic criteria for autism ('Autistic Disorder'). Since then, the reported numbers of people with autism have increased from one in every 2,000 children to one in every 50--a 75% rise in just the last decade. With big business emerging for everyone including basic researchers, therapists, and educators, while the media in turn promotes sensationalized reports like autism caused by vaccines, or claims that thousands of hours of 1:1 behavior modification programs can cure it, the need for a level playing field has emerged. The Politics of Autism explores new viewpoints on 'old' issues: Is there more autism? What's wrong with how autism gets diagnosed? Are standard treatments really appropriate given the life course of people with autism? Why does fear of vaccines persist? Are we effectively allocating autism research dollars if the goal is to help people with autism? What does this modern fascination with something like autism tell us about our society today? What does it tell us about what people will believe, and how little it can take to get them to believe something? This book takes on the politics of autism by exposing the sub rosa truths that are often impolitic or seemingly too sensitive to discuss. All drawn from data--readers will explore unabashed contrarian views on autism epidemiology, autism service provision, autism education, and autism research. Each chapter will focus both on the controversies themselves, and how these controversies came to be. Chapters divided to address a different set of issues, data, and social policy recommendations for changes can be read as a sequence or individual treatments on the selected topics. Each chapter will shine light into arenas of the autism world where Bryna Siegel, who has worked in the autism field for 40 years, has had a ringside seat or sometimes been in the ring herself. Each chapter will provide a narrative of the different false alarms, false cures, soft-as-quicksand science, or other snake oil that has heralded the surfacing of some aspect of the world of autism into public consciousness. In addition, readers will find a chapter-by-chapter bibliography with URLs to many engaging references posted on the author's website. References include popular media/internet resources. Dr. Bryna Siegel's work has focused on the development and learning of children with autism. She analyzes autism as the confluence of expected and atypical development as a way to understanding autism-specific learning disabilities and learning styles. Her interest in the politics of autism grows from years of observing disparities in access to autism diagnosis, autism education, and support for families living with autism. In The Politics of Autism, she explores American positivism, internet disinformation, and focuses on autism as a case example of how societal forces have led to wasteful and ineffective autism education, false hope for cures, pyrrhic battles about vaccines, lack of vision to plan for adults with autism, and costly medical research that helps no one with autism, but expropriates dollars that could be directed to improving lives. Analysis of each issue concludes with recommendations for social policy changes.

Native Place, City, and Nation

Bryna Goodman

This book explores the role of native place associations in the development of modern Chinese urban society and the role of native-place identity in the development of urban nationalism. From the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, sojourners from other provinces dominated the population of Shanghai and other expanding commercial Chinese cities. These immigrants formed native place associations beginning in the imperial period and persisting into the mid-twentieth century. Goodman examines the modernization of these associations and argues that under weak urban government, native place sentiment and organization flourished and had a profound effect on city life, social order and urban and national identity.

The Suicide of Miss Xi

A suicide scandal in Shanghai reveals the social fault lines of democratic visions in China’s troubled Republic in the early 1920s.On September 8, 1922, the body of Xi Shangzhen was found hanging in the Shanghai newspaper office where she worked. Although her death occurred outside of Chinese jurisdiction, her US-educated employer, Tang Jiezhi, was kidnapped by Chinese authorities and put on trial. In the unfolding scandal, novelists, filmmakers, suffragists, reformers, and even a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party seized upon the case as emblematic of deep social problems. Xi’s family claimed that Tang had pressured her to be his concubine; his conviction instead for financial fraud only stirred further controversy. The creation of a republic ten years earlier had inspired a vision of popular sovereignty and citizenship premised upon gender equality and legal reform. After the quick suppression of the first Chinese parliament, commercial circles took up the banner of democracy in their pursuit of wealth. But, Bryna Goodman shows, the suicide of an educated “new woman” exposed the emptiness of republican democracy after a flash of speculative finance gripped the city. In the shadow of economic crisis, Tang’s trial also exposed the frailty of legal mechanisms in a political landscape fragmented by warlords and enclaves of foreign colonial rule. The Suicide of Miss Xi opens a window onto how urban Chinese in the early twentieth century navigated China’s early passage through democratic populism, in an ill-fated moment of possibility between empire and party dictatorship. Xi Shangzhen became a symbol of the failures of the Chinese Republic as well as the broken promises of citizen’s rights, gender equality, and financial prosperity betokened by liberal democracy and capitalism.

In Israel, the High Holiday cycle marks the transition from summer to the rainy season. In Waiting for Rain, the acclaimed teacher Bryna Levy offers a compelling collection of meditations that examine the biblical and liturgical readings associated with the High Holidays, from Rosh Hashanah to Simhat Torah. Based on a series of lectures given in Jerusalem at Matan - the Women's Institute for Torah Studies, and known as "The Hoshana Rabbah Lectures," Levy's readings of the traditional texts echo the natural and spiritual tenor of this season. Waiting for Rain joins the field of biblical interpretation known as parshanut ha-mikrah. It offers fresh insights into traditional rabbinic interpretation, together with the author's perspective as a modern Orthodox woman bible scholar. Levy explores the psyches of the biblical characters and addresses issues such as our connectedness to others, the tragedy of wasted opportunity, confronting evil, the denial of death, faith and doubt, personal and communal responsibility, universalism versus particularism, the challenge of leadership, sin and atonement, and the efficacy of prayer. The result is a highly personal approach to the meaning of the High Holidays that resonates with our own modern lives. Stories about heroes and heroines, love, faith, hope, and dreams make this book a moving and engaging source for study and reflection as well as an excellent companion to the traditional High Holiday prayer services. This book explores how women make meaning at various health flashpoints in their lives, overcoming fear, anxiety, and anger to draw upon self-advocacy, research, and crucial decision-making.Combining focus group research, content analysis, autoethnography, and textual inquiry, the book argues that the making and remaking of what we call “patient epistemologies” is a continual process wherein a health flashpoint—sometimes a new diagnosis, sometimes a reoccurrence or worsening of an existing condition or the progression of a natural process—can cause an individual to be thrust into a discourse community that was not of their own choosing. This study will interest students and scholars of health communication, rhetoric of health and medicine, women’s studies, public health, healthcare policy, philosophy of medicine, medical sociology, and medical humanities.

My Bipolar, Roller Coaster, Feelings Book

Pediatric Bipolar Disorder is a neurobiological disorder that requires medical treatment. Even with successful medical treatment, however, both children and adults with bipolar disorder usually need coping skillls to manage and live with this challenging illness. The purpose of this book is to help the child with bipolar disorder better understand his or her feelings, and feel less alone in this world. This book is written for elementary school age children, but may be of use for those younger or older. Children with bipolar disorder usually have strong emotional responses to their world. The first step to treating this illness is proper medical attention. Once these children receive treatment, it is important to help them identify, understand, cope with and manage these feelings. In order to give children a sense of control over these strong feelings, a caring adult can first learn how to label their feelings. Next, guide the child to strategize appropriate responses and practice or role play the strategies. Our hope is that this book facilitates discussions with your child to help in that process. In using this book, help the child understand that feelings are an emotional response to stimulus, and it's very hard, if not impossible, to change those initial feelings. What a healthy and stable child can learn to do, however, is manage the resulting behavior and choose how much control feelings have over their lives. In other words, while it is acceptable to be angry, it is not acceptable to act destructively because of that anger. That doesn't mean, however, that an unstable child should be expected to control their illness through sheer willpower.
