Throughout its history, New England College has been recognized for innovative academic programs and leadership in experiential education. Founded in 1946 to offer educational opportunities to veterans eager to return to the workforce, the college pioneered an accelerated and demanding three-year degree program, unique at that time. From the earliest years to the present day, the faculty has included practitioners active in their fields and fostered learning partnerships with external organizations. In 1971, the college acquired a British campus and became one of the first American institutions to offer students a full four-year degree program outside of the United States, an innovation in cross-cultural experiential education. In recent years, the college has effectively utilized technological advancements to extend the reach of its creative and supportive learning community, while still challenging individuals to transform themselves and their world, maintaining a curriculum focused on experiential learning, and fostering collaborative relationships among members of the community.

All that is known of the first Willis to arrive on US soil is that he immigrated in 1730 and came from Wales. These stories of his descendants, however, offer a glimpse into the development and settlement of the United States and Texas. Extensively researched and written by Olive Elizabeth Martin Burns (n e Willis), a.k.a. Tucker, The Braided Cord: The Story of the Willis Family traces the lives seven generations of Willises through the present day. Tucker brings her family's past to life, chronicling their successes and failures, their military service and businesses, and the family's move to the rough-and-ready farmlands of Texas. You'll meet Peter J. Willis and his brothers, who first moved to Texas and established a successful business firm only to have a manipulative wife brings down the family empire. There's the story of Short Adam, a fifth-generation Willis who left Texas to live the life of a country squire in Connecticut, returning late in life with a young wife and three children. The history of the Willises is always set against the grand backdrop of Texas. To read this book is to understand the settlement of a state and the growth of a family.

Praise from Rev. Jim Wallis: "This book is the best treatment of Martin Luther King's faith that I have seen, and an incredibly thorough exploration of the ways faith was fundamentally central to Dr. King's vision, action, and perspective on mission and civil rights. In this book we see the full extent of what it means to form a spiritual commitment to justice, activism, and equality, and are reminded of what we are called to do for others, our society, and ourselves. This edition presents a strikingly nuanced and human vision of the civil rights leader and reverend we are all familiar with." -Jim Wallis, New York Times bestselling author of America's Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America, president of Sojourners, and editor-in-chief of Sojourners magazine In this intimate portrait of the Civil Rights Movement and its greatest leader, historian Stewart Burns weaves the spiritual and political dimensions of Dr. King's life and the movement for freedom into a single garment. The spiritual and political dimensions illuminate each other. Told with a vivid narrative, mining unmined sources, To the Mountaintop shows how his Christian faith and his self-conception as chosen but unworthy messiah, facing death daily, became his guiding forces in his life and leadership. Praise for the first edition: "Thoroughly researched and gracefully written, To the Mountaintop is a brilliant interpretation of Martin Luther King Jr.'s vocation to save America. Anyone who wishes to understand King and the civil rights movement cannot afford to miss this book." Rev. Dr. James H. Cone, Union Theological Seminary, founder of Black liberation theology, author of God of the Oppressed and Martin and Malcolm and America "For those of us who knew Martin Luther King Jr. and were involved in the Southern movement, but also for all Americans, Stewart Burns brings wonderfully alive both the man himself and those exciting, inspiring times." Howard Zinn, activist historian, author, A People's History of the United States Highly regarded historian of the Black freedom movement, author or editor of eight books, Professor Burns is renowned for his 2004 biography of Dr. King, To the Mountaintop (HarperCollins), winner of the prestigious Wilbur Award for conveying religious ideas to secular readers. Clergy and lay people of various faiths praised his lucid portrayal of King's spiritual journey and its impact on his leadership in civil rights, human rights, and world peace. The new edition, a penetrating spiritual biography, is enriched by twelve years of the author's further research and theological exploration.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The shocking, definitive account of the 2020 election and the first year of the Biden presidency by two New York Times reporters, exposing the deep fissures within both parties as the country approaches a political breaking point. This is the authoritative account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country's political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden's first year in the White House. From Donald Trump's assault on the 2020 election and his ongoing campaign of vengeance against his fellow Republicans, to the behind-the-scenes story of Biden's selection of Kamala Harris as his running mate and his bitter struggles to unite the Democratic Party, this book exposes the degree to which the two-party system has been strained to the point of disintegration. More than at any time in recent history, the long-established traditions and institutions of American politics are under siege as a set of aging political leaders struggle to hold together a changing country. Martin and Burns break news on most every page, drawing on hundreds of interviews and never-before-seen documents and recordings from the highest levels of government. The book asks the vitally important (and disturbing) question: can American democracy, as we know it, ever work again?

The authors of this report explore a more expansive approach to readiness assessments--one that looks beyond the narrow lens of operational readiness more typical of readiness systems in use in the Department of Defense and considers a broader set of dimensions that could affect readiness outcomes. This more expansive perspective can lead to a better understanding of the root cause of readiness shortfalls.
