Seit dem Erscheinen des zweibändigen Standardwerkes von F. HONCAMP, "Handbuch der Pflanzenernährung und Düngerlehre", sind mehr als dreißig Jahre vergangen. Bei den stürmischen Fortschritten auf allen Gebieten der Natur wissenschaften, insbesondere der Chemie, Pflanzenphysiologie, Biochemie, Bodenkunde und Technologie, ist dieses zur Zeit seines Erscheinens so aus gezeichnete Handbuch natürlich längst veraltet. Zweifellos besteht heute ein dringendes Bedürfnis nach einem ähnlichen Werk. Wenn wir von dem ursprünglichen Plan abgekommen sind, das HONCAMP sche Handbuch in neuer Auflage zu bearbeiten, so vor allem deswegen, weil die tiefgreifende Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet eine völlig neue Gestaltung des Werkes geboten erscheinen ließ. Es gliedert sich nun in drei Bände. Band I behandelt im wesentlichen die physiologischen Grundlagen der Pflanzenernährung. Er enthält eine ausführliche und systematische Darstellung der eigentlichen Ernährungsphysiologie. Auf eine Erörterung der allgemeinen pflanzen physiologischen Grundlagen konnte dabei verzichtet werden, weil im RUHLAND sehen "Handbuch der Pflanzenphysiologie" ein umfassendes und modernes Nach schlagewerk zur Verfügung steht. Band II beschäftigt sich mit dem Boden und den Düngemitteln. Unter Berücksichtigung der modernen Agrikulturchemie haben wir das heutige Wissen über den Boden als Standort und Nährstoffquelle der Pflanze unter den Verhält nissen der landwirtschaftlichen Praxis und des Gartenbaues bzw. des Forstwesens systematisch zusammengefaßt. Die folgenden Kapitel befassen sich mit der Beschreibung und Herstellung der verschiedenen Wirtschafts- und Handels düngemittel. Gerade auf diesem Gebiet bestehen in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur erhebliche Lücken, da keinegrößeren Lehr-oder Handbücher vorhanden sind, die sich eingehender mit der Technologie der Düngemittel und der Düngung beschäftigen.

unbedeutenden Schaden verursachte, wurde in kalkhaltigen und nassen BOden zu einem groBen Problem (SEELIGER 1933); wir haben heute noch keine Unterlage, welche allen Anspriichen geniigen wiirde. Die Auswertung der Versuche leidet unter einer weiteren Schwierigkeit, welche sich allerdings auch bei anderen landwirtschaftlichen Versuchen, aber in viel geringerem Umfang, einstellt. Bei der Rebe ist nicht so sehr der Ertrag von ausschlaggebender Bedeutung, sondern vielmehr die Qualitat; sie kann durch kellertechnische MaBnahmen wesentlich starker beeinfluBt werden, aIs dies bei anderen Nahrungsmitteln durch deren Verarbeitung der Fall ist. Wenn auch papier- und gaschromatographische Methoden einen groBen Fort schritt in der objektiven Untersuchungsmoglichkeit gebracht haben, bleibt doch die organoleptische Priifung und damit eine subjektive Feststellung in ihrer Bedeutung unerreicht. Zusammenfassend konnen wir konstatieren, daB bei den angefiihrten Schwierigkeiten fUr eine exakte Versuchsanstellung nur verhaltnismaBig wenig Versuche iibrig bleiben, bei denen von einer statistischen Sicherung der Er gebnisse gesprochen werden kann. Eine zukiinftige varianzanalytische Auswertung einfacher Versuche verspricht wesentliche Fortschritte. Der Weinbau wird geographisch gesehen in den Grenzen betrieben, welche das Klima fUr diese Kultur gezogen hat. Der Wachstumsfaktor Warme kommt in der nordlichen Weinbauzone ofter ins Minimum und beeintrachtigt damit die Zuckerbildung. Da die Witterung die Diingungseinfliisse im Weinbau weit starker iibertreffen kann als dies bei anderen Kulturen der Fa.ll ist, stand die Rebenernahrung nie so sehr im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Hinzu kommt, daB Erfolge oder MiBerfolge in der Schadlingsbekampfung die Wirtschaftlichkeit des Weinbaues im allgemeinen, d. h. abgesehen von starkem Nahrstoffmangel, mehr beeinflussen aIs die Diingung."

With the introduction of modern neuroanatomical tract-tracing techniques (e. g. , Heimer and RoBards 1981; Mesulam 1982) and immunohistochemical methods (e. g. , Cuello 1983) powerful tools to study the circuitry of the central nervous system in vertebrates became available. These techniques have also been widely applied in "lower" vertebrates. A major task of comparative neurobiology is to sample the variations that exist in the brains of living taxa and to recognize common morphological patterns and their adaptive significance (Northcutt 1978, 1981). Reptiles, with their great variation in form and locomotion, are particularly interesting objects for neurobiologic research. They were the first vertebrates to be truly terrestrial and each reptilian radiation has solved many of the major obstacles to successful land invasion in strikingly different ways (Gans 1974). Among reptiles, the most encephalized species (as regards brain- body weight relationship, e. g. , Jerison 1973; Ebbesson and Northcutt 1976; Platel1979) are the dracomorphs (e. g. teiids, varanids and iguanids). The brains of dracomorphs can best be described as the most complex among living lizards with increase in both size and differentiation of most sensory modalities (North- cutt 1978). In the present study, the structure and fiber connections of the brain stem of such a highly developed dracomorph, the savanna monitor lizard, Varanus exanthematicus (Fig. 1), are analyzed. The brain stem plays a key role within the central nervous system.
Heredity, environment, the role of infectious agents, and other influences have been cited within a multiplicity of factors of possible relevance to the problem of neoplasm etiology. In some cases, such as that of retinoblastoma the influence of hereditary factors has been clearly established. The influence of genetic factors in cerebral tumour development has been under discussion since as early as 1896 when Besold reported two sisters suffering from brain tumours. Although much more is now known about the classification, prognosis, and treatment of these tumours, and a number of familial cases have been reported, the present data are insufficient to permit conclusions regarding the influence of hereditary factors in the etiology of most types of cerebral neoplasms, and research in this area is urgently required. Research on familial brain tumours must still be largely based upon the cumulative case histories which have been reported. Although a number of papers contain historical reviews, some in tabulated form, the actual data have not been readily available to the researcher, each investigator being obliged to compile anew all reports published on the subject over an 80 year period. This book represents an attempt by the present authors to assemble the pertinent data on individual cases of familial brain tumours published since 1896. For this purpose the essential information from the original articles in German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Czechoslovakian have been translated into English.

We have come to know that our ability to survive and grow as a nation to a very large degree depends upon our scientific progress. Moreover, it is not enough simply to keep 1 abreast of the rest of the world in scientific matters. We must maintain our leadership. President Harry Truman spoke those words in 1950, in the aftermath of World War II and in the midst of the Cold War. Indeed, the scientific and engineering leadership of the United States and its allies in the twentieth century played key roles in the successful outcomes of both World War II and the Cold War, sparing the world the twin horrors of fascism and totalitarian communism, and fueling the economic prosperity that followed. Today, as the United States and its allies once again find themselves at war, President Truman’s words ring as true as they did a half-century ago. The goal set out in the Truman Administration of maintaining leadership in science has remained the policy of the U. S. Government to this day: Dr. John Marburger, the Director of the Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) in the Executive Office of the President, made remarks to that effect during his 2 confirmation hearings in October 2001. The United States needs metrics for measuring its success in meeting this goal of maintaining leadership in science and technology. That is one of the reasons that the National Science Foundation (NSF) and many other agencies of the U. S.
