On her eighteenth birthday, Abigail Jordan foresees the death of a woman, and then it comes true. From there, she goes on an incredible journey of self-discovery in which she uncovers the secrets of her past and her heritage as a timekeeper--people chosen to record and measure time, but not change it. But timekeeping isn't the important aspect for Abigail; for her, it's finding out what happened to her biological mother, Elisabeth. Her mother's death was deemed a suicide, but Abigail knows it isn't true. In the midst of World War II, Abigail must battle both the literal war in the world and the war within herself. Her biological father, Mathias, wants her to learn about his world, while other mysterious figures want her dead. She has to decide who to trust in order to determine where she belongs.Set in 1940s era London, The Timekeeper's Daughter follows Abigail as she goes on a journey of self-discovery all while battling issues dealing with love, family, tragedy, and trust.

The world Abigail Jordan has come to know has been destroyed, and only she can save it and herself from total destruction. But the only way she can save the world is to turn back the clock. To make matters worse, Councilor Headrick and Lucinda Callaghan are on the hunt to abduct Abigail for the fulfillment of a prophecy that has long been in the works amongst the darkest of Timekeepers. In search of answers, help, and a plan to save them all, Abigail goes in search of her biological mother, Elisabeth Callaghan, but Elisabeth will tell a story Abigail is not sure she is ready to hear-a story that will finally reveal all of the secrets, as well as the sins, of her mother's past. In this final installment of THE TIMEKEEPER'S DAUGHTER TRILOGY, Abigail must defy the odds, and with the help of her biological parents, Thomas Jane, and her friends from San Francisco, race against a ticking clock, as well as the dangers of her own grandmother, Lucinda, to reverse the devastating mistake that has rocked her world. Separated into three parts, and told in dual perspectives, ASCENSION, by C.J.M. Naylor, will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the final page is turned.

Economic dimensions have been somewhat neglected in research on nature policy and management of marine ecosystem exploitation. The current book aims to ?ll this gap. It examines the mismatches of natural, socio-economic, and regulatory processes and regimes in time and space. This involves dealing with the complexity and uncertainty that are inherent to the interaction of marine ecosystems and economic systems. The approach adopted is based on the idea that the design of sustainability policies requires an integration of insights from resource, environmental, and ecological economics on theonehandandmarinebiologyandenvironmentalsciencesontheotherhand.Forthis purpose, use is made of integrated assessment on the basis of theoretical and applied mathematical models. The book is the result of a large project, hosted by the Department of Spatial E- nomics of the Free University in Amsterdam, under the supervision of the ?rst author. TheprojectreceivedfundingfromtheNetherlandsOrganisationforScienti?cResearch (NWO), through a “priority program”titled“SustainableUseandConservationof- rine Living Resources,” which was initiated and coordinated by Prof. Wim Wolff of the University of Groningen. The work reported here has greatly bene?ted from external advice given by marine biologists who participated in this research program.

This study offers a unique evolutionary economics perspective on energy and innovation policies in the wider context of the transition to sustainable development. The authors include:an analysis of the environmental policy implications of evolutionary economicsa critical examination of current Dutch environmental and innovation policies and policy documentssystematic evaluation of three specific energy technologies, namely fuel cells, nuclear fusion and photovoltaic cells, within the evolutionary-economic framework.Their analysis results in a number of very specific policy recommendations, which to some extent may be in conflict with current policy advice and practice.Evolutionary Economics and Environmental Policy will appeal to researchers, undergraduate and graduate students in environmental economics, environmental science, public economics and technology studies. It will also be valuable to policy advisors and policymakers whose decisions affect the environment either directly or indirectly.

The effectiveness and scope of operational analysis of sustainable development is explored in this major new book. Ecological Economics and Sustainable Development offers an integrated treatment of theory, methods and applications for economic-ecological analysis taking into consideration all the relevant interactions between economic, development and physical and biological processes. An overview of different theoretical perspectives, based on insights from economics, ecology and thermodynamics, is followed by discussion of the dimensions of sustainable development including ethics and intergenerational equity, sustainable and multiple use, and spatial sustainability. The second part of the book discusses methods for analysis, covering the choice of indicators, natural resource accounting, and integrated static, dynamic and spatial modelling, and evaluation, including multi-criteria and cost-benefit analysis. Attention is also given to decision support and the choice of policy instruments.Combinations of the various methods are applied in the final part of the book, using case studies which cover a range of ecosystems and regions, as well as a variety of issues and problems. These studies clearly show the potential of policy-oriented integrated economic-ecological analysis for sustainable development.

The Ecological Economics of Biodiversity

The Ecological Economics of Biodiversity

Paulo A.L.D. Nunes; Jeroen C.J.M. van den Bergh; Peter Nijkamp

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd

The loss of biodiversity has put increasing pressure on the stability and continuity of ecosystems, and their ability to provide goods and services to mankind. This valuable new book addresses this issue and presents an integrated ecological-economic perspective on the analysis of biodiversity loss and conservation. It adopts a multidisciplinary approach and attempts both to provide a definition of biodiversity benefits as well as investigate alternative perspectives on biodiversity. The book also presents a classification of biodiversity values and effectively illustrates which economic valuation methods can best measure which type of biodiversity value. The distinguished authors move on to discuss the utility of the application of the economics-ecology interface and integrated modelling for the assessment of biodiversity values. In doing so, they consider the use of multi-criteria evaluation and meta-analytical methods to deal with the aggregation of information from multiple disciplines and past valuation studies, respectively. The book concludes by addressing the role of biodiversity indicators and monetary information for policy design and biodiversity management, devoting special attention to the certification and the ecolabeling of biodiversity benefits. The integration of economic and ecological theories and methods, and the strong methodological orientation will be of immense benefit to students, academics and researchers of environmental economics, environmental science and ecology. Policymakers involved with nature policy and management will also find this volume to be of great practical value.
