Annie Ashford is a gentle teenage girl living in rural Texas at the beginning of the twentieth century. A kind young deacon, Paul Haynes, is courting her, and her future life promises to be a happy one. Then a newcomer arrives in town--a handsome half-breed named Deal Porter. Powerless against his brooding charm, Annie marries Deal, completely unaware that he is a psychopathic murderer. By turns touching, humorous, and terrifying, "Run, Annie, Run is an unforgettable and evocative book, teeming with fascinating characters and situations. Spanning fifty years of Annie's turbulent life, the novel draws the reader completely and masterfully into the worlds it portrays, both the physical one of a now-vanished Texas, and the emotional one of its gallant, doomed heroine.
Arnhill sits staining the hills of Nottinghamshire. A rundown mining community which never properly survived the closing of its mines. Now it's haunted by a new tragedy after a boy is killed by his mother. But before she turned the gun on herself she used his blood to smear a chilling message on the wall. Not My Son. Shortly afterwards, Joseph Thorne returns to Arnhill but he is stalked by a sinister figure from the present and painful memories of the past. As Joseph takes over the dead woman's job and moves into her house, still stained with blood, he realises the secrets of his past still lurk in Arhill's shadows.
The year is 1956. Howard Smith is a young man, a teenager, just transplanted from New Jersey to Minnesota. The move has allowed him to escape from a messy, unresolved social situation and begin anew. By pure chance, he meets Annie, a young woman from Chicago. She is the young woman who every parent dream of having as a daughter. She is brilliant, straightforward, athletic and charming. Her grandmother and her mother were renown concert pianist and Annie at fifteen is already more adept at the piano than either her mother or grandmother. Annie's life is complicated because she has a high IQ, goes to an all-girls school, and her very wealthy father treats her like a twelve-year-old. All of this has helped make her interactions with young men her age awkward. She meets Howard Stevens by chance, and they end up working together to get the families sailboat ready for an upcoming regatta. At their first meeting, they are friendly and attracted to each other. A few days later they find themselves in love with each other something Annie's family will not allow. Annie finds her way around this obstacle, and the relationship becomes a terrific match. It allows them to help each other mature and become abler than either would ever be on their own. Eager to find his place in the world, and with Annie's support and love, Howard hurtles headlong through his youth searching for answers and somewhere to belong. What he discovers through friendships, educational striving, a tragic love affair, and a marriage, come experience. These combine to shape his destiny, scar his soul and teach him lessons about living he never imagined.

This book explores the life and career of Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava (1826–1902). Dufferin was a landowner in Ulster, an urbane diplomat, literary sensation, courtier, politician, colonial governor, collector, son, husband and father. The book draws on episodes from Dufferin’s career to link the landowning and aristocratic culture he was born into with his experience of governing across the British Empire, in Canada, Egypt, Syria and India. This book argues that there was a defined conception of aristocratic governance and purpose that infused the political and imperial world, and was based on two elements: the inheritance and management of a landed estate, and a well-defined sense of ‘rule by the best’. It identifies a particular kind of atmosphere of empire and aristocracy, one that was riven with tensions and angst, as those who saw themselves as the hereditary leaders of Britain and Ireland were challenged by a rising democracy and, in Ireland, by a powerful new definition of what Irishness was. It offers a new perspective on both empire and aristocracy in the nineteenth century, and will appeal to a broad scholarly audience and the wider public.

The intimate journal of a troubled young girl wrestling with addiction, destructive behavior, bulimia and rampant promiscuity... Foreword: My ex-husband, R. C., is the one who got me to write this memoir. He's the one who pushed and prodded and kicked my ass and, since I'm not much of a writer, the one who actually got it all down on paper. The result, what spewed out, is a graphic, sometimes painfully explicit story centered around the sex life of a young girl (me ) who, among other things, started having sex at fourteen and stripping at fifteen. A story that basically can't be told because, in our rational and enlightened society, it is absolutely forbidden to write about underage persons and sex in the same sentence, let alone devote an entire book to it This is because the studied, moral and political position of our society seems to be that people under a certain age should know absolutely nothing about sex. At all cost, they must be protected from such knowledge because (it is reasoned) their ignorance will not only keep them from entering puberty and having sexual feelings, it will also presumably keep them from getting pregnant or contracting AIDs. My goal in writing this, my raison d' tre, is to help others who may be going through what I went through. To show other troubled teenagers that they are not freaks; that they are not alone; that they can survive But that's not gonna happen. Not bloody likely. At best, this is an adult story that will be proscribed even for adults and, if anybody is going to read this book, sadly, it will not be those who need it most. Whatever. --Anna M. Ferkuniak
