Caridad Svich: The Spanish Golden Age Plays
THE SPANISH GOLDEN AGE PLAYS collects three playful, spirited, go-for-broke adaptation/translations by US Latina dramatist Caridad Svich of comedies by Maria Zayas de Sotomayor, Lope de Vega, and Calderon de la Barca. These three plays - A LITTLE BETRAYAL AMONG FRIENDS, THE LABYRINTH OF DESIRE and THE MONSTER IN THE GARDEN - play fast and loose with issues of gender, sexuality, and identity and shed new light on works from Spain's golden age of drama.
Caridad Svich: Art and Decadence Plays
The three plays by OBIE-winning playwright Caridad Svich examine varying aspects of art and decadence through the lens of contemporary visual art, photography, painting, and fashion. MAGNIFICENT WASTE (2012 finalist for PEN Center USA Literary Award in Drama), LULU ASCENDING (a play on Wedekind's Lulu plays) and TILT HEAVEN are acid-dipped views of celebrity culture and consumerism, suffused with a hard ache for the lost souls that inhabit their distinct harsh-lit, emptied worlds of sadness.
Caridad Svich: Plays of Love & Enchantment
The six plays in this collection by OBIE-award-winning playwright Caridad Svich are a series of meditations on love, time, virtuality, and transience in the modern world. They focus mainly on young characters drifting through their lives, and in and out of relationships. These theatre pieces are written as little spells of love. They bristle with both poison and enchantment, as they send their characters into orbit. What they ask, in sometimes ardently pure text, is for a new kind of theatre language to be born- out of and through aspects of love.

OUTLAW PLAYS by US playwright Caridad Svich focus on characters living outside boundaries imagined and real. The two plays in this volume- KILL TO EAT (a patriot song) and PENSACOLA - are driven by a punk energy in their use of language and the staging of action. Poetic, raw and strange, they traffic and play with genre tropes from pulp fiction, "noir" cinema, and steam-punk literature and are influenced by murder ballads and electric blues.
Caridad Svich: Plays of Intimacy and Grace
Three plays by US playwright Caridad Svich that chart the rise and fall of couples in and out of love, loss and moments of tenderness and grace: INSTRUCTIONS FOR BREATHING, IN YOUR ARMS and GRACE (IN THE UPPER ROOM). With an introduction on Svich's poetic rendering of "troubled sanctuaries" for the stage by dramaturge R. Alex Davis.
agua de luna (psalms for the rouge)

GERTIE AND ALICE BY THE SEA by Caridad Svich. In the last house in the world, two women live out their days. They could be the famous Gertie and Alice, but they are not necessarily. They still do the things we do--eating, talking, laughing with friends and lovers until what they know begins to slip away, and all that is left is desire. This play was developed at The Lark, Ensemble Studio Theatre at Primary Stages, and CEAD's 2017 Dramaturgies et Dialogues Festival in Montreal, Canada.

THIS THING OF OURS by Caridad Svich. A text for live performance. In THIS THING OF OURS, an act of violence struck our city. This has happened before. We say we will put our lives back together. Years will go by. We will grow apart, come together, have children, and some of us, will wonder how to keep going, as we turn to myths and seek lessons there. In our theaters of memory, in our songs of transcendence, perhaps we will find peace. THIS THING OF OURS was first seen at Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' Ignite Festival of New Work.

In Caridad Svich's play with songs TWELVE OPHELIAS, Shakespeare's Ophelia rises up out of the water dreaming of Pop-Tarts and other sweet things. She finds herself in a neo-Elizabethan Appalachian setting where Gertrude runs a brothel, Hamlet is called a Rude Boy, and nothing is what it seems. In this mirrored world of word-scraps and cold sex, Ophelia cuts a new path for herself.

By turns astonishing, fierce, and tender, these seven plays by Latina-American dramatist Caridad Svich highlight more than two decades of boundary-breaking and genre-defying dramatic work. Populated by characters struggling to survive, these plays are joined by thematic threads of loss, remembrance, resurrection, grave wit, and heroic survival. The centerpiece of this collection, "Instructions for Breathing", is a lyrical, dreamlike meditation on responsibility and parenthood that asks an audience not only to suffer the unthinkable loss of a child as Svich's characters do, but also to laugh at the couple's flaws and at the hilarity of the suburban life they lead. This commingling of emotion happens in each of these dramatic portraits of homeless castaways (Fugitive Pieces), women in war (Thrush), and sex traffickers (Rift). And Svich's work is not without a nod to the classical: "Wreckage" reframes the story of Medea, and "Steal Back Light from the Virtual" depicts a labyrinthine society torn apart by a monstrous beast. In sum, "Instructions for Breathing and Other Plays" serves as an illuminating introduction to the work of a major playwright, and an inspiring example of the breadth of possibilities in North American drama.
