Ezra a Carman

Modern students of the Battle of Antietam owe a large debt to Ezra A. Carman. Colonel of the 13th New Jersey Infantry and then brigade commander, he devoted much of his later life to preserving the history of the battle and the newly established National Battlefield Park. Included in these efforts was a manuscript detailing the Maryland Campaign of 1862, written with extensive input from surviving veterans from both sides. Unpublished during his lifetime, it has since been released in several versions. The Visual Antietam series publishes Carman's manuscript with a heavy emphasis on maps and photographs. Visual Antietam Vol. 1: Ezra Carman's Antietam Through Maps and Pictures: Dawn to Dunker Church contains sixty-three (63) images, both period and modern, allowing the reader to see the battlefield today and as it was only days after the battle. Twenty-six (26) original maps intricately detail troop movements that fateful morning.

Ezra A. Carman is regarded as the father of Antietam historiography. Colonel of the 13th New Jersey Infantry during the battle, he spent the better part of his later life writing a comprehensive manuscript detailing the Maryland Campaign. He also spent a significant amount of effort to build an accurate order of battle, along with the strength of the armies engaged. The result was a detailed and meticulously researched account of the actions in Maryland and Virginia during that fateful September 1862. Adding to this work, he created a series of maps showing the movement and flow of the battle over the course of the day. His work has served as the foundation for much of the following history of the battle. Though written more than a century ago, it holds up to modern scrutiny quite well. The Visual Antietam series publishes Carman's manuscript with a heavy emphasis on maps and photographs. Visual Antietam Vol. 2: Ezra Carman's Antietam Through Maps and Pictures: The West Woods to Bloody Lane contains sixty (60) images, both period and modern, allowing the reader to see the battlefield today and as it was only days after the battle. Fifty-three (53) original maps explain the troop movements during the course of that morning and afternoon.

Homo Sapiens has ravaged the earth. Warnings of species extinction and ecosystem collapse are escalating. But while we tremble to see the damage our species has done, we are, at the same time, heading for a massive paradigm shift in human consciousness that can bring us and all earthlings out of these dark times and into a new way of living that works. We are becoming aware of our true heart which sees all life as sacred and interconnected. We are becoming Homo Ahimsa*--the kind, nonviolent, compassionate and nurturing creatures that we were always meant to be. (*Ahimsa is the Sanskrit word that literally means non-harm. More broadly, it means reverence for all life, non-killing, and caring for all life rather than destroying it.)

Derided as a buffoon and an ignorant civilian by military critics, Borden became the public's lightning rod and Prime Minster Wilfrid Laurier's point man for negotiating Canada's sensitive military agenda during an era of high imperialism. Carman Miller presents a balanced assessment that seamlessly blends history and social and cultural analysis to highlight Borden's relationships within the contemporary web of nepotism, patronage, business, and family. A detailed account of the leading role Borden played in the development of modern Canada, A Knight in Politics showcases the transition to corporate capitalism and changes in public morality and social and political relationships during the "Age of Camelot."

The Canadian political and social discussion of the late nineteenth century owed a great deal to Grip, the satirical magazine that kept a vigilant eye on national affairs from 1873 to 1894. Illustrated and edited by an energetic, talented young reformer named John W. Bengough, Grip featured sketches, poetry, and political invective. Bengough's caricatures of dignitaries and cartoons of political situations were supplemented in at least two periods by the acerbic commentary of socialist pioneer T. Phillips Thompson. Together, the two men provided a running account and critique of the era's attitudes on class, sex, race, and public policy. Bengough was part of a broad progressive alliance that linked farm and labour agitators with Christian intellectuals, alarmed about the worst excesses of turn-of-the-century capitalism. Grip was an early, and righteous, crusader for this liberal, Protestant, reformist view. Sketches from a Young Country is the first comprehensive study to evaluate this historically important magazine, assess the motivations of its authors, and set both in social and political context. The author begins by discussing the magazine's visual contribution to its time, then explores its relationship with the federal and Ontario reform parties and its anti-Tory bias. Later chapters examine Grip's response to Western development, its descent into 'race and creed' propaganda in the late 1880s, its anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist leanings under Thompson's influence, and its stance on such social issues as women's rights, aboriginal issues, and law and order. Containing over a hundred of Bengough's cartoons, with captions to clarify contemporary references, and offering an assessment of Grip in relation to its British and American counterparts, Sketches from a Young Country makes an exciting contribution to popular history, Canadian politics, and the history of journalism.
