The Frail Elderly

The Frail Elderly

Elderly issues currently inspire a great deal of research, discussion, and public policy debate. Cox's informative, comprehensive, and sensitive consideration of an especially vulnerable elderly segment--the frail--makes a genuine contribution to the understanding of frailty that must guide support systems and public policy.Issues addressed in this work include not only the consequences of frailty but also its prevention. The forms of support or assistance which some older individuals require as their limitations increase are detailed. Mental health concerns, health care, housing, and caregiving, are discussed, with particular attention given to the needs of ethnic elderly. Community programs, many of them highly creative and effective, are reviewed. Insights are gained from experiences in other countries. The pressing need for a better understanding of what actually constitutes frailty is emphasized. Such understanding is seen as a prerequisite for more effective community response and improved national policy. This is a balanced, informed, and practical analysis of a socially compelling and broadly experienced issue and human condition.

This book is a practical, comprehensive, step-by-step guide to performing one of Shakespeare's plays in a classroom, library, or recreational setting. Shakespeare Kids: Performing his Plays, Speaking his Words opens the world of the Bard to children, providing a wonderful learning experience along the way. Designed as a comprehensive, practical guide to engaging students with the playwright's timeless stories, Shakespeare Kids covers every aspect of production and performance, with step-by-step guidelines on how to choose, cast, rehearse, produce, and perform a play. It even shows you how to condense a play without changing Shakespeare's language. The book's inclusive approach is based on the author's experience performing these plays with hundreds of students in the classroom and in recreational programs. Each of the ten recommended plays is summarized, with special attractions for performing it with students noted. The rationale for teaching language arts and reading by performing Shakespeare is based on national standards and recent reading research and explains how to differentiate this approach for English learners and students with disabilities. A ready-to-use, condensed script for Macbeth gets you started. Grades 3-8

Home Care for the Elderly

This work presents the results of a study undertaken by Abraham Monk and Carole Cox, which analyzes how the countries of Argentina, Canada, England, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden have responded to the increasing need for home health care. The study, completed with the cooperation of a team of researchers in each country, avoids isolated, fragmented solutions to the problem in favor of a more holistic profile of programs and services, placing them within the general policy and cultural framework of each region. It then examines the applicability of selected aspects of those home care programs deemed most effective to the needs of the United States as it too attempts to deal with a growing older population and the prohibitive costs of institutionalized care. After a review of existing home care in the United States, and an explanation of the operational model used to collect the data in the study, each country's home health care system is outlined with attention to its organization and operation, its manpower requirements, its place within government policy, and its most successful and innovative practices. The international scope of the work makes its evaluative material and recommendations useful to both health care professionals and international policy makers.

A Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book "This moving picture book portrays a girl who met injustice with dignity and excelled."--Booklist (starred review) From a multi-award-winning pair comes a deeply affecting portrait of determination against discrimination: the story of young spelling champion MacNolia Cox. MacNolia Cox was no ordinary kid.Her idea of fun was reading the dictionary. In 1936, eighth grader MacNolia Cox became the first African American to win the Akron, Ohio, spelling bee. And with that win, she was asked to compete at the prestigious National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC, where she and a girl from New Jersey were the first African Americans invited since its founding. She left her home state a celebrity--right up there with Ohio's own Joe Louis and Jesse Owens--with a military band and a crowd of thousands to see her off at the station. But celebration turned to chill when the train crossed the state line into Maryland, where segregation was the law of the land. Prejudice and discrimination ruled--on the train, in the hotel, and, sadly, at the spelling bee itself. With a brief epilogue recounting MacNolia's further history, How Do You Spell Unfair? is the story of her groundbreaking achievement magnificently told by award-winning creators and frequent picture-book collaborators Carole Boston Weatherford and Frank Morrison.

"This semester I will be teaching a new undergraduate social work elective at Lehman that is about aging policy. I had searched for months for a book thatwould be appropriate for this course. I did not find anything until I received an online advertisement from Springer that included Social Policy for anAging Society. I requested an examination copy and decided immediately after reviewing it that this is the book that is perfect for this course. Itcertainly fills a significant gap in textbooks available for gerontological courses. I value the fact that it emphasizes a human rights perspective that isconsistent with an orientation of our social work department at Lehman." -- Patricia Kolb, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Social Work, Lehman College, City University of New York As people age, they are at increased risk of having their basic human rights threatened or violated. When age is perceived as incompetence, it can easily lead to discrimination that impacts human rights. Based on the premise that social policy must reflect human rights principles, this graduate-level textbook views the challenges associated with aging as opportunities for policy development that stresses the rights of older adults rather than needs. The text distinguishes between "needs" and "rights" and describes those policies and services that best ensure that the rights of older adults are actually metv=particularly programs that enable people to remain in their own communities so they can benefit from continued integration and participation in society. Issues and challenges surrounding such efforts, and gaps in social policies faced by specific subsets of older people, are critically examined. The book first analyzes current aging policies and rights and considers the Older Americans Act as a basic policy framework. With an eye to promoting independence, the book discusses issues of income, housing, transportation, health, and home care and what constitutes a "livable community," along with policies that promote wellbeing and focus on preventing senior abuse and exploitation. Challenges faced by older workers are covered, as are issues particular to family caregivers, older women, and grandparents as caregivers. Gaps in social policies for LG BT seniors and older members of specific ethnic groups are discussed. Particular attention is given to global issues and aging policies in diverse countries and the ways in which they reflect human rights concerns. Each chapter concludes with probing discussion questions for classroom use. KEY FEATURES: Presents a human rights framework for aging policy Distinguishes between needs and rights of older persons Focuses on policies and programs that can help older people to remain in the community Explores the issues and challenges of specific older populations Discusses global responses and concerns with regard to older persons and human rights Carole B. Cox, MSW, PhD, is professor at the Graduate School of Social Service, Fordham University. She is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and a Fulbright scholar. She is the author of more than 50 journal articles and chapters dealing with various aspects of aging and caregiving, with extensive research on caregivers for persons with dementia, their needs, and their use of services. Her recent work includes a study of the impact of dementia on the workplace. Her caregiving research also includes that of grandparents raising grandchildren, leading to the development of a curriculum, Empowering Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: A Training Manual for Group Leaders (Springer Publishing Company, 2000). She is the editor of To Grandmother's House We Go and Stay: Perspectives on Custodial Grandparents (Springer Publishing Company, 2000). Social Work and Antisemitism

Social Work and Antisemitism

This timely book on social work and antisemitism fills an important gap in social work education and in the profession. The ethics and framework of the social work profession demand that it confronts oppression and prejudice while working for a socially just society. However, education on antisemitism is seldom included in social work curriculum or in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. This text addresses this need for education and intervention, and includes a teaching guide for use in social work curriculum as well as social work practice. Antisemitism, hatred and discrimination against Jewish people and Jewish institutions, is perhaps the oldest form of oppression. Throughout history, as with other oppressions, myths and stereotypes to substantiate antisemitism were developed. More recently, however, antisemitism has been increasing steadily across the globe. Combatting and dismantling it is critical for both Jewish people and institutions, the social work profession, and for society. In the book, the authors discuss antisemitism's history, the role of the Holocaust, contemporary manifestations of antisemitism, and its impact on individuals and societies. Among the topics covered are: Introduction: Human Rights, Social Justice, and Social WorkPalestine, Israel, and ZionismContemporary AntisemitismAntisemitism and Mental HealthAntisemitism: A Guide for Teaching and Social Work Practice Social Work and Antisemitism: Issues and Interventions offers a foundation for combatting antisemitism and addresses the need for social work involvement. The book can be used as a primary or secondary text for courses that cover diversity, human rights, human development, ethnicity, oppression, and mental health in Bachelor- or Masters-level programs in schools of social work. In addition, the book can be used in other programs, such as DEI, or by other disciplines interested in learning about and educating about antisemitism.

For the student it provides an opportunity to understand how clinically effective care is provided." - Extract from the Foreword by Sue Norman - Chief Executive/Registrar, UKCC.Clinical effectiveness is a concept of central importance for health care professionals, and yet it is often unclear exactly what it is, how it can be applied, and how it should influence the delivery of care. This stimulating text clarifies what clinical effectiveness is and explains how it can be achieved in practice. Written by experienced practitioners and academics, it presents a wide range of research and case studies that demonstrate clinically effective care and the necessity for evidence-based practice. Drawing on their own original research into clinical effectiveness, the authors highlight key issues influencing practice and examine them in the light of new research. They combine solid evidence with guidelines for practice to show how a real difference can be made to the delivery of care. This balanced and engaging text will be an essential resource for all health care professionals wishing to enhance their practice, and a valuable guide for students who need to understand how clinically effective care is delivered in practice.
