Ages 3 to 6 years. 'Purple Spaghetti': Apparently when I was about 4 I invited friends to lunch and coloured the mash potato green in order for it not to be BORING! When my children were small and very picky eaters I prepared everything with sprinkles over it. But for my Grandchildren I knew this would not be welcomed as todays young mothers are so much better informed about nutrition than we were. When they came over I had to report back that they had eaten lunch or I felt I would have failed in my grandmotherly duty. This led to my colouring the spaghetti with a tiny splash of food colouring and was greeted with great glee and willing appetites. Consequently, for a while afterwards they refuse to eat pasta unless it is coloured but that soon wears off and by then they are well into eating pasta. This story is every kids favourite and I have received many an accolade for it. 'Grandma's Orange cloth': This story developed from the tears when one knocks one's drink over - for young parents, a daily occurrence. I tried to show one can turn an upset into a fun deal and at the same time teach them something about colour mixing and problem solving. With all the options from yellow to red a good outcome was perceived. 'Apples are Apples': When their parents went away and the grandies came to stay with me, every lunch box was a major discussion; 'I dont want green grapes only red.' 'I only eat red apples, mommy never gives me green apples...' So this was a game which showed them that there really isnt a great deal of difference and if you like apples, all apples are good for you. The game became popular and we had many laughs.

In the midst of an epoch of memoirs, it is a rare joy to find a work that demonstrates both a compelling level of historical detail and offers a narrative driven by more than the facts alone -- just one of the reasons that newcomer Hilary Rudick's stunning new family biography, Linking the Threads, is such a pleasure to read. In the early 20th Century, a young Lithuanian tailor flees his ancestral home and its burgeoning anti-Semitism and embarks for South Africa -- a land reminiscent of a young America featuring "streets paved with gold". Having left his home as "Doniyel" he becomes "Daniel" and, though he finds a welcoming Jewish community in his new country, the traditions of his homeland often seem a distant and painful memory. As Daniel's story evolves, Rudick displays a great sensitivity to the notion of home, the power of culture, and the heartbreak involved with losing and gaining family and friends. The narrative does not end there, however Rudick proceeds to recount the stories of Daniel's children (her grandparents) and of her own life in South Africa during the turbulent 1970s.But as the narrative broadens, Rudick ensures it remains cohesive by linking eras and characters with powerful Jewish imagery and symbolism. Pesach, the Seder, the chuppah -- even the spicy sweet confection ruggelach -- become characters themselves and offer their own history to the reader. Reading Linking the Threads is akin to exploring an ancient trunk and extracting an aged and fading tapestry that grows ever more vibrant as it is brought into the light. Rudick has woven a stunning and memorable tale that is nothing less than a model for the memoir format.

Two of the most difficult things we are challenged to do in life are adapt to change and learn how to turn negative experiences into positive ones. Kali's Journey is the spiritually-based journey of a teenager who tried to escape the pain of losing her mother only to find herself literally adrift at sea with no way home. Suddenly, a young dolphin appears to comfort her. What follows is the inspiring story of two dolphins and a whale that have come to teach Kali the Universal secrets to surviving change and finding joy in the darkest of moments.Kali's Journey fills the void left by so many books that fail to understand that children are more likely to grasp the simplicity of life's most profound lessons than are adults. In her state of fear and confusion, Kali learns about true love, our eternal connection to those who are dear to us and the Oneness of all life forms. While at first Kali is shocked and a bit frightened by her newly arrived, sea-worthy friends, she soon realizes that they have come to awaken her to what she has been resisting so far...using her own power to bring joy to herself and others. Kali's Journey is a simple-to-read story that contains some of the most powerful and profound lessons from the self-help and self-awareness movements that are now, thanks to Kali, available for the child in each of us. The book not only simplifies powerful teachings of deeply spiritual concepts, it also provides practical application for how young people can live these concepts in their daily lives.Children and adults alike will benefit from Kali's Journey and be amazed by its simplicity and easy application in manifesting their best life. You'll read it to your child, with your child and then sneak off to contemplate it by yourself over a cup of coffee. Recommended for ages 8-90.

Jane Eisner traces the professional accomplishments and personal challenges of pop icon Carole King, exploring her unique contribution to American music Carole King’s extraordinary career has defined American popular music for more than half a century. Born in New York City in 1942, she shaped the soundtrack of 1960s teen culture with such songs as “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” one of many Brill Building classics she wrote with her first husband, Gerry Goffin. She was a leading figure in the singer-songwriter movement of the 1970s, with dozens of Billboard Hot 100 hits and music awards—her 1971 album Tapestry won a record four Grammys. Yet she struggled to reconcile her fame with her roles as a wife and mother and retreated to the backwoods of Idaho, only to emerge in recent years as a political activist and the subject of the Tony-winning Broadway show Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Journalist and author Jane Eisner places King’s life in historical and cultural context, revealing details of her humble beginnings in postwar Jewish Brooklyn, the roots of her musical genius, her four marriages, and her anguish about public life. Drawing on numerous interviews as well as historical and contemporary sources, this book brings to life King’s professional accomplishments, her personal challenges, and her lasting contributions to the great American songbook.

Carole Pateman
Carole Pateman’s writings have been innovatory precisely for their qualities of engagement, pursued at the height of intellectual rigour. This book draws from her vast output of articles, chapters, books and speeches to provide a thematic yet integrated account of her innovations in political theory and contributions to the politics of policy-making. The editors have focused on work in three key areas:DemocracyPateman’s perspective is rooted in a practical perspective, enquiring into and speculating about forms of participation over and above the ‘traditional’ exclusions through which representative systems have been variously constructed over time. Her work pushes hard on theorists and politicians who make easy assumptions about apathy and public opinion, who bracket off the workplace and the home, and who see politics only in partisan activity, voter behaviour and governmental policy.WomenPateman’s innovatory and still-cited work on participation antedates the feminist revolution in political theory and many of the practical struggles that developed through the later 1970s. While woman-centred, her concerns were always worked through larger conceptions of social class, economic advantage, power differentials, ‘liberal’ individualism and contracts including marriage. Her feminism was innovative in political theory, and within feminism itself. As a feminist Pateman defies categorization, and her concepts of ‘the sexual contract’ and ‘Wollstonecraft’s dilemma’ are canonical.WelfarePateman’s innovation here is an integration of welfare issues – in particular the proposals for a ‘basic income’ or for a ‘capital stake’ – into her broad but always rigorous conception of democracy. This is argued through in terms of citizenship, taken as the result of a social contract. In that way Pateman puts liberalism itself through an imminent critique, drawing in the practicalities and risks of life in late capitalist societies. Her theory as always is political, taking in neo-liberal attacks on ‘welfare states’ and the stark realities of international inequalities. Pateman’s career achievements in democratic and feminist theory are brought productively to bear on debates that would otherwise occur in more limited, and less provocative, academic and political contexts.
