"Rabbi Carole L. Meyers was a wonderful, inspiring, provocative and brilliant speaker. She brought the lessons of the Torah to life and made them contemporary, understandable and powerful. She was also funny and self-effacing, and had a smile that could outshine the eternal light. In short, she had a profound impact as a moral and spiritual leader, and when she left us, no one had better prepared their congregation to cope with the magnitude of its loss." --Adam B. Kitch-iti-kipi (The Big Spring) is one of Michigan's most popular tourist attractions. Many folk tales exist about this natural wonder found deep in the woods of the Upper Peninsula. Many of those stories were admittedly made up by John I. Bellair, a local businessman in the 1920s, in an effort to attract more visitors to the area. But what is the authentic Native American legend of Kitch-iti-kipi?The story in this book has been passed down orally in the author's Native American family for more than one hundred years. Although Natives seldom write down their folklore, the author's great-great-aunt actually did write this legend in a published booklet which was found when she passed away in 1969. That booklet was the author's inspiration for this book. The Legend of Kitch-iti-kipi reads like a Native version of Romeo and Juliet. In it, the deep love between a handsome brave and a young maiden drives a powerful chief to act out his jealousy. The results are tragic for all three

Numerous reprehensible corporate, governmental, and nonprofit activities over recent years have highlighted the existence of organizational evil. Unlike other works on the topic, this book fully develops the concept of organizational evil, conceptually weaving the interchange between evil individuals (microlevel) who ultimately create the organizational environment that is evil, and the macrolevel elements of policy, culture, and manipulations of the social environment.

A comparative study of citizenship education and adolescent political attitudes in five western democracies. This book sheds light on the question: Under what conditions do democratic attitudes and values take root in youth? Using a comparative perspective, Becoming Political describes alternative forms of education for democracy and points to consequences of various alternatives in diverse settings. This study of civic education and adolescent political attitudes contains rich descriptive information from interviews with students and teachers and classroom observations in England, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States. Such qualitative information gathered over the past decade complements findings from surveys administered to students ages fifteen through nineteen in fifty schools in the five countries.Chapters focus on civic education in the five countries, adolescent political attitudes and behaviors, gender and political attitudes, support for free expression for diverse views, and classroom climate and the investigation of controversial public policy issues. An appendix describes the varied political contexts in which youth in the five democracies are being politically socialized. The book will be of use to readers interested in social studies education, comparative education, and youth political socialization, as well as education for democracy.
Useful Gifts

Useful Gifts

Charged with the mystery of childhood, with curiosity and daring, confusion and fear, the eleven interrelated stories in Useful Gifts explore what Ruthie knows. The youngest child of profoundly deaf parents living in Manhattan in the 1940s and 1950s, Ruthie Zimmer speaks and signs. Interpreting for her parents, she tries to make sense of worlds as close as her family's fourth-floor apartment, as expansive as her rooftop playground and as diverse as the neighborhood below. The ways of language, its ways, its habits, its humor—as well as the demons that rise within us when we fail to communicate—form an undercurrent in many of Carole Glickfeld's stories. In "What My Mother Knows" Hannah Zimmer gleans the neighborhood gossip from her apartment window, telling Ruthie in a gesture that Mrs. Frangione is pregnant again, and announcing in clipped, terse signs that the O'Briens have divorced. "Know drunk?…Unhappy, fight, wife, divorce." There is, in "My Father's Darling" the hoarse, choked screaming of Albert Zimmer, "Honorfatherhonorfatherhonorfather" striking his daughter Melva has she sinks to the floor muttering "Misermisermisermiser" in the distant, disembodied voice of a ventriloquist. And, in "Talking Mama-Losh'n" there is Sidney, Ruthie's older brother, "getting down to business," sprinkling his speech with Yiddish, French and German—words that project a wisdom and cosmopolitanism he clearly craves.Three floors below the Zimmer apartment, Ruthie enters the altogether different realm of Dot, a thrice-married hatcheck girl, and her daughter and son, Glory and Roy Rogers. These are characters who, as their names seem to promise, bring adventure and excitement—from acted-out fantasies of Hollywood to gunfights amid the rooftop battlements of "Fort Arden," from impulsive, stylish haircuts to Chinese food with pork. And, across the stoop, Ruthie visits with the Opals family—Iris, Ivy, and Ione—three daughters whose endless lessons in charm, elocution and posture prime them for future "fame and glory."In Useful Gifts, Carole Glickfeld creates, through the optimistic voice of a young girl, intimacy with the complexity and heartbreak of a world we hope she can survive. In the closing story of the collection, Ruth Zimmer, twenty years older, retraces her neighborhood—not only to preserve her memories but to understand, finally, their effect on her now, a grown woman living three thousand miles away.

Ciara never gave up. And victory is what she found. The love within her made her special. She kept pushing her way through all of her struggels. Sometime we can't see the value in a person until its to late. We walk by people everyday and we may never know their stories. Broken hearts on the inside and still keeping a smile on the out side for the world to see. Ciara saw the value in everyone. We must look at others and see the value within them. Values given to them by our creator. Ciara believe that love must always conqure hate. An abundance of love is what the universe needs. And because of that love, there will be peace within the universe. Ciara was so full of love. Its ashame her husband did not her value. With his eyes wide open, he did not see that his wife was a blessing from God. And even when he did wrong to her, she still forgave him. Love made Ciara special. And she was loved by many.
