A deserted mansion perches on a steep hillside, overlooking a rocky canyon. Tattered curtains hang behind broken windows, and a turret stretches toward the sky. Three years ago the wealthy owner disappeared suddenly, leaving behind a house full of secrets: A mysterious note, tantalizing clues, a hidden floor, one piece of a treasure map, and a missing fortune in diamonds. Thirteen-year-old sleuth Skylar Robbins moves into the mansion with her parents and embarks on a new and dangerous mission. Armed with her detective kit, and with the support of her BFF Alexa and a team of secret agents, Skylar sets out to decipher the clues and find the diamonds. Can she outwit a gang of older bullies and find the hidden jewels before they do? Or will the perils of middle school--like battling ruthless Emelyn Peters for the attention of class hottie Dustin Coles--get in her way? Skylar Robbins: The Mystery of the Hidden Jewels is an Amazon #1 Bestseller in Children's Detective Books, was voted Book-of-the-Month by LASR readers, won the 5-star Reader's Favorite award, and was a Top Ten Finalist for an Author Academy Award in the YA/Middle Grade category.

Thirteen-year-old sleuth Skylar Robbins is about to take on her most dangerous case yet. The challenge: braving a savage enemy while solving the mystery of a strangely frightening idol. Skylar's new high-tech detective gadgets give her intelligence an extra edge. A canister of Invisi-powder is vital when she and her assistant detective, Alexa, suddenly need to disappear. Earbuds and a small high-powered microphone make up a Soundtrap: perfect for eavesdropping on her crush while he plays My Secret Kiss, or on the boys in the next hut while they devise a terribly risky plan. Her Supalight, visible from half a mile away, enables Skylar's crew to message her during a midnight attack. Night vision goggles might save her life when she's chased through a dark jungle with her brilliant partner, Daniel Gannon. Fierce island natives will stop at nothing to prevent the teens from discovering the true meaning of the idols. Will Skylar's team survive to return to middle school? Or will this field trip be their last adventure? Skylar Robbins mysteries have won multiple awards, and more than one have been Amazon #1 Bestsellers in Children's Detective Books. The under-representation of the artist voice in specific research methods is what convinced me to write from my perspective as an American woman artist whose work crosses disciplinary boundaries. The purpose of my first person writing is to expand the twenty-year old dialog concerning cross-discipline practice within art and anthropology. The distinct content includes approaches that I have drawn from each discipline and includes an evaluation of how digital media has altered the structures of those disciplines for the process of my Collection Project. My monograph contributes to the development of defining the artist's role with the production of knowledge beyond a standard visual means to interdisciplinary practice. Ever since Christopher Columbus stepped off the Santa Maria and announced that he had arrived in the Orient, the Caribbean has been a stage for projected fantasies and competition between world powers. In Empire's Crossroads, historian Carrie Gibson offers a vivid, panoramic view of this complex region and its rich, important history. That fateful landing in 1492 soon launched a savage competition for West Indian territory that would last centuries. Gibson compellingly traces the ups and downs of European imperial expansion--including the first cash crops, failed settlements, and pirating on the open seas--but she also brilliantly describes daily life on the islands. Creole societies complicated traditional ideas about class and race, and by the end of the eighteenth century, plantation slaves in Saint-Domingue had launched the Haitian Revolution, the world's only successful slave revolt. As European control of the Caribbean loosened over the next 150 years, America was on the rise, ushering in a new era of foreign influence and the birth of the tourism industry that still thrives today. Incredibly multi-faceted and approachably written, Empire's Crossroads encompasses the narratives of more than twenty islands and reinterprets five centuries of history have been underappreciated for far too long.

In Empire's Crossroads, Carrie Gibson offers readers a vivid, authoritative and action-packed history of the Caribbean. For Gibson, everything was created in the West Indies: the Europe of today, its financial foundations built with sugar money: the factories and mills built as a result of the work of slaves thousands of miles away; the idea of true equality as espoused in Saint Domingue in the 1790s; the slow progress to independence; and even globalization and migration, with the ships passing to and fro taking people and goods in all possible directions, hundreds of years before the term 'globalization' was coined. From Cuba to Haiti, from Dominica to Martinique, from Jamaica to Trinidad, the story of the Caribbean is not simply the story of slaves and masters - but of fortune-seekers and pirates, scientists and servants, travellers and tourists. It is not only a story of imperial expansion - European and American - but of global connections, and also of life as it is lived in the islands, both in the past and today.

Danger and deception run rampant in the Canadian wilderness as the survivors of the Sky Rider attempt to find help to get back to civilization. Coming to crossroads is never easy, but what do you do when none of the paths promise to lead you home?
Simon of Cyrene: A Devotional Look at the Man who Carried the Cross of Jesus
Simon of Cyrene is an obscure Bible character who had a tremendous role to play at the time of the crucifixion of Jesus. Three out of the four gospels mention his name and the fact that he carried the cross of Jesus, but there is little else known about him.Hidden in the few verses of Scripture mentioning his name are some interesting details about the work that Jesus carried out that day. Simon's role was not only to minister to the Lord Jesus by carrying the cross but also to show us something about the work He accomplished that day. The goal of this short study on the person of Simon of Cyrene is to see his significance in revealing Christ and His ministry on our behalf.
