Writing Contested Illness

Writing Contested Illness

Intervening in the gnarled lineage of gender, genre and medicine, Writing Contested Illness investigates how uncertainty, doubt and dismissal, the key features of medical contestation, are mediated and transformed in women's experimental illness narratives. It discusses how a range of autobiographical experimentation in emerging and increasingly common subgenres like autofiction, autotheory, experimental memoir and the lyric essay, are creating productive new avenues for contested illnesses to be represented. These illnesses, which range in this book across hysteria, eating disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and chronic Lyme disease, have been subject to constrictive medical practices, rendering the conditions illegitimate, under-studied and under-diagnosed. In observing how such narratives identify the rifts caused by medicalised contestation and identify key sites of repair within this sphere, this book argues that experimental life writing can be its own first-hand, affective and embodied source of medical knowledge.

This edition of Daphnis and Chloe , the best known of the Greek romances, provides the first modern commentary in English on this intriguing work. This is the story of two young people growing up as goatherd and shepherdess, and their discovery of love, sex and their true selves. Beneath the charm of its deceptively simple surface, this novel explores perennial questions about the naturalness of conventional gender relations, about the roles of instinct and culture in love, about the pain and responsibilities involved in becoming an adult, and ultimately about the relationship between Art and Nature, Fiction and Truth. Morgan presents a sequential reading of the novel, using the tools of modern literary theory to explain how narrative articulates meaning, and exploring Longus' creative dialogue with the literary tradition. The Greek text and English translation are on facing pages.

When Chloe was five, I met with a panel of experts to discuss Chloe's "disability". I rejected their prognosis. "It's developmental," I said. "It will come." Whatever "it" was, it didn't. What did come along was a beautiful girl, one who acted, reacted, and thought differently than the rest of the world; one who saw normalcy as mediocrity and conformity as complacency. This is Chloe's journey through her innocent and creative mind, one labeled as "delayed processing" and "dyslexia".
