En resa till hjärtlandet baseras på en vetenskaplig studie av hur rasism och nazism reproduceras på specifika platser i Sverige. Boken kretsar kring den fiktiva orten "Bredabruk". I centrum för studien framträder skolan som institution och dess roll i att motverka men ibland också oavsiktligt bidra till reproduktion av såväl vardagsrasism som mer explicita nynazistiska uttryck. Här möter vi ungdomar och vuxna som har bestämda uppfattningar om vad som gör Bredabruk till en bra plats att växa upp på, och samtidigt en plats där intolerans, konspirationsteorier och högerextremism under de senaste hundra åren förts över från generation till generation.
