År 1780 lämnade prästen Christfrid Ganander in en uppsats om de så kallade Tattare eller Zigeuner till Kungliga Vitterhetsakademien i Stockholm. Den var ett bidrag till en årlig tävling i historia och var skriven för hand med snirklig stil. Nu blir hans försök att finna romernas härkomst och historia för första gången tillgänglig för en bredare publik i både transkriberad form och moderniserad språkdräkt. Christfrid Ganander levde och verkade som präst i Finland, då en del av Sverige. Han genomsökte historisk litteratur om de människor som han omväxlande kallar tattare och zigenare . Han hade även studerat och samtalat med dem, och visste att de själva kallade sig musta kansa på finska det svarta folket . Deras språk, romani chib, fångade hans intresse, och i uppsatsen har han listat romska ord och fraser och diskuterar språkets grammatik.Skriften ger en unik glimt av romsk kulturhistoria och språk under slutet av 1700-talet, och en inblick i fördomar mot romer och villkor som romer levt under. Forskarna Lotta Fernstål och Charlotte Hyltén-Cavallius sätter i bokens inledning in uppsatsen i sitt tidsmässiga sammanhang, och belyser författarens reflektioner över gruppen vilka är färgade av såväl nyfikenhet som fördömanden.

Freud Against God traces the development of Freud’s atheism, from his youth through to Moses and Monotheism, published in 1939. Christfried Toegel takes a largely chronological approach, tracing how biographical developments in Freud’s life and political events gradually led to his conviction that it is "a greater risk if we maintain our present attitude to religion than if we give it up." The book considers Freud’s life, his writing, and the influence of politics and society. Chapter 1 covers the genesis of Freud’s critical attitude towards religion and the influence of Ludwig Börne, Charles Darwin, and John Stuart Mill.
