Äktenskapet är en ram kring personliga relationer, men det handlar också om politik och makt. I denna bok är det äktenskap som politik som står i fokus, närmare bestämt den process som ledde fram till den djupgående reform av äktenskapslagstiftningen som genomfördes i de nordiska länderna mellan 1909 och 1929, alltså decennier före övriga Europa. Detta föranleder författarna att tala om en specifik nordisk äktenskapsmodell. Den nya lagstiftningen var ett resultat av ett omfattande skandinaviskt harmoniseringsarbete, och innebar en re-formering av såväl reglerna för ingående och upplösning av äktenskap som det rättsliga förhållandet mellan makarna inom äktenskapet. Likställighet var ett honnörsord i debatten, men begreppet hade en annan innebörd än idag. De gifta kvinnorna gavs erkännande som självständiga och myndiga individer, samtidigt som lagen strävade efter att stärka dem i deras ställning som mödrar och husmödrar. Kärnfamiljen satte ramen för likställigheten. I lagen lyser begreppet kärlek med sin frånvaro. Familjerätten handlade om annat om parternas rättigheter och skyldigheter gentemot varandra, gentemot barnen och mot tredje part. Bokens empiriska fokus ligger på lagarnas utformning och på de aktörer som på olika sätt var engagerade i lagstiftningsprocessen juristerna, kvinnorörelsens representanter, politikerna, läkarna och prästerna. Reformen sätts vidare in i ett större samhälleligt perspektiv och ses som ett centralt element i den moderniseringsprocess som skapade den skandinaviska välfärdsstaten. Den nordiska äktenskapsmodellen hade sina historiska rötter samtidigt som den var ytterst modern, i sin tro på vetenskapen, på den individuella friheten och på statens rätt att intervenera i det mest privata. During his career as an architect, he designed major public buildings such as the Quebec Music Hall, Laval University, Sainte-Marie de Beauce church, and Dufferin Terrace, and was supervising architect for the first Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. He was responsible for introducing Gothic and Greek Revival styles to Quebec city and fostered the use of contemporary materials in residential and commercial structures. Christina Cameron's biography of this remarkable man includes an analysis of innovations in architectural design and construction technology in Quebec City during the middle of the nineteenth century, and includes a discussion of the radical change in the role of the architect from the architect/artisan of the previous century to the professional man who no longer took any part in the actual construction.
