Featuring a generous selection from four published collections of the poems of Christine Evans, this book also features her new work. Spanning two decades, the book opens with pieces from "Looking Inland. The visiting farmers in "Callers" with their "blunt, nervous hands" set the tone for the early poems, which are poignant, precise observations of the author's surroundings, a farm on the Llyn Peninsula in north Wales. Also included is the entire "Falling Back, an accomplished longer poem. It tells the story of a woman's attempts to come to terms with the death of her husband, a shepherd, in north Wales. From initial stunned grief through recovery, the slow stages of bereavement are movingly portrayed. The poems from "Cometary Phases show an increasing confidence and ambition. In pieces like "Deep Under" and "Fodder," the poet starts with externals and then moves deeper, using the landscape as metaphor for emotional or spiritual states. Selections from the "Island of Dark Horses focus on the mysterious island of Bardsey off the coast of Llyn, whose history and inhabitants inspire Evans to a series of reflections, culminating in the long celebratory title poem.

The Right to Reparation in International Law for Victims of Armed Conflict
In this evaluation of the international legal standing of the right to reparation and its practical implementation at the national level, Christine Evans outlines State responsibility and examines the jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice, the Articles on State Responsibility of the International Law Commission and the convergence of norms in different branches of international law, notably human rights law, humanitarian law and international criminal law. Case studies of countries in which the United Nations has played a significant role in peace negotiations and post-conflict processes allow her to analyse to what extent transitional justice measures have promoted State responsibility for reparations, interacted with human rights mechanisms and prompted subsequent elaboration of domestic legislation and reparations policies. In conclusion, she argues for an emerging customary right for individuals to receive reparations for serious violations of human rights and a corresponding responsibility of States.

Nadia moves between the competing perspectives of two survivors of the 1990s Balkan Wars who have escaped to London, only to discover that the war has followed them there. Nadia is a young refugee who just wants to forget the past—until Iggy starts temping at her London office. Afraid he may be a sniper from the war she fled, Nadia starts seeing threats everywhere, alongside unsettling visions of her lost girlfriend, Sanja. As her volatile connection with Iggy unravels, Nadia is forced to face the shaky, ethical choices she made to escape the war, her survivor guilt, and her disavowed queer sexuality. Nadia takes us to the recent past of a war that broke apart a European country and that presciently foreshadowed the rise of ethno-nationalism in the West. Tense, suspenseful, and mordantly funny, Nadia tracks the complex ways in which a past marked by political violence can shadow and disrupt the present.

It's a still, hot summer in Perth, Australia. The heat is shimmering off the city's glass buildings, with not much to do but surrender to the cool of Beatty Park's swimming pool. However, something is moving amid all the stillness - a hidden snake sliding through shadows. It's moving through lives and connecting them with its sonar trembles: Auntie, in town with Jerome to find the kid's runaway mum; Kevin, tired of his bus route, dealing with raucous kids and bottlenecks and a city that seems to be growing hostile; Karri and his other-worldly sister Bat Girl; Jackie and her sisters, sharing smokes by the pool. In this exquisite, lyrical verse novel by acclaimed playwright Christine Evans, readers will witness the strange and invisible ways people are drawn together and pulled apart - and to venture to the catastrophic release that might ultimately return them home. *** Librarians: ebook available on ProQuest and EBSCO Subject: Poetry, Literature]

Cometary Phases is Christine Evans' first collection of poetry for six years. It builds on the lyrical and unsentimental portrayal of rural life which is a feature of her work, but includes a striking new imaginative power. Ageing, change, the environment and the position of women are her subjects now, in poems often shot through with darkness and foreboding. At the centre of Cometary Phases are a group of remarkable poems from the small hours, the time 'between wakings': the poems of a gifted insomniac, as they have been called. Other poems imaginatively enter the world of animals, like the unforgettable 'Whale Dream', while the long title poem searches for meaning in change and death, a search lit by Halley's Comet.Christine Evans taught English on the Llyn Peninsula, where she lives with her husband and son on a farm. Her first collection, Looking Inland, was described as having 'something to say that is worth saying...a sane response to experience' . Her work is widely pubished; Seren produced four collections: Looking Inland, Falling Back, Cometary Phases and Island of Dark Horses.
