Property and the German Idea of Freedom: From the End of the Thirty Years' War to the Eve of the French Revolution in Germany
This book offers a new interpretation German law and politics during the era between the Thirty Years' War and the French Revolution. Liberal ideas of freedom and equality were prototyped in Germany in property law: through the free disposition of estates, freedom from taxation and other extractions, and free use of paper money. Civil liberty, ideas about equality, and restrictions on arbitrary state power were real, recognized, and meaningful. These freedoms were enjoyed by all classes of Germans. They were thought to have been built atop Germans' ancient heritage of freedom and a federalist imperial constitution which inspired Montesquieu and the American Founders. Driving these trends were ideas about political economy, enlightened reform, practical problem solving, as well as forces of supply and demand in everything from the market for books to the market for justice. This book places the story of early modern German freedom close by the side of more familiar stories for England, North America, France, and the Netherlands.

The Normandy campaign in the summer of 1944 was perhaps the most important battle of the twentieth century. It decided the fate of Nazi Germany. This historiographical narrative critically assesses the important literature on the campaign and offers the most comprehensive bibliography on the subject to date. This research guide is easily accessible, with cross-references between the text and the bibliography and a full index. It has been developed for use in public, college, university, and institutional libraries and to serve military historians and history buffs interested in D-Day.The narrative provides a brief historical background, describes ten different types of sources for conducting research on the Normandy campaign and then looks at sources concerned with the Second Front, Overlord, air and naval preparations, Operation Fortitude, D-Day, and the Battle for Normandy, before pointing to trends and future research needs. The second part of the book lists 539 works on the Normandy campaign, including references, bibliographies, guides, dissertations, books, documents, and magazine articles. The emphasis is on English-language works, but the most significant French and German materials are included also.
Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1887-1976
In the desperate summer of 1942, Hitler seemed to be on the verge of victory in Russia and the Middle East. With Rommel nearing Cairo, a little known lieutenant-general, Bernard Montgomery, took charge of what Churchill called a baffled and bewildered British 8th Army. Assuming command, Montgomery issued his famous order, Here we will stand and fight;...If we can't stay here alive, then let us stay here dead, and led the Army to one of the Allies' greatest victories—El Alamein. Monty became an instantly recognizable Allied leader, but as a man with strong views, unbending principles, and outspoken frankness, he was both loved and disliked, praised and criticized. This bibliography presents and evaluates the extensive body of literature that has grown up around the controversial Field Marshal.Any serious study of World War II military campaigns must confront Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, an individualist with both admirers and detractors. This book provides an extensive historiographical overview of the literature in Part I and a bibliography of significant works in Part II. It is a basic reference and research guide for the student, scholar, and general reader.

Few of the major campaigns of World War II aroused as much controversy as the War in North Africa, 1940-1943. Figures such as Rommel, Montgomery, and Eisenhower would become world famous because of the fighting in North Africa. This book opens with seven historiographical essays that evaluate and critically assess the major contributions to the literature on the War in North Africa. It then includes an alphabetically arranged bibliography of the 504 entries cited in the essays. The material is easily accessible, with cross-references between the text and the bibliography and a full index. The volume includes chapters on the Desert War, 1940-42; the Axis Powers in North Africa; Montgomery, Alam Halfa and El Alamein; TORCH: the Landings in French North Africa, and the Tunisian Campaign. Full attention is given to questions and issues historians have raised on such controversies as the Auchinleck-Montgomery dispute, the debate over Operation TORCH, and the Darlan affair. Emphasis is on English-language works, but the most significant Italian, German, and French works are cited and assessed. The book has been written for use in public, college, university, and institutional libraries, and to serve general readers and military historians.
The Essence of Chromatography

The Essence of Chromatography

Colin F. Poole

Elsevier Science Ltd

nidottu
The knowledge base of chromatography continued to expand throughout the 1990s owing to its many applications to problems of contemporary interest in industry, life and environmental sciences. Organizing this information into a single text for a diverse group of scientists has become increasingly difficult. The present book stemmed from the desire to revise Chromatography Today, written by the same author with Salwa K. Poole, and published in 1991. This title is considered to be one of the definitive texts on chromatography. It was soon realized however, that a simple revision would not provide the desired result of a contemporary picture of the practice of chromatography at the turn of the century. The only workable solution was to start afresh, maintaining the same general philosophy and concept for Chromatography Today where possible, while creating essentially a new book. The format of the new book is modular, with extensive cross-references to permit rapid location of related material using different separation concepts. Important features are extensive tabulation of essential data for performing separations and an extensive bibliography to the most recent literature. This title is intended as a suitable text for graduate level courses in the separation sciences and as a self-study guide for professional chromatographers wishing to refresh their background in this rapidly expanding field. The Essence of Chromatography presents a comprehensive survey of modern chromatography and is an effective replacement for Chromatography Today.
Behavioral Game Theory

Behavioral Game Theory

Colin F. Camerer

PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRESS
2003
sidottu
Game theory, the formalized study of strategy, began in the 1940s by asking how emotionless geniuses should play games, but ignored until recently how average people with emotions and limited foresight actually play games. This book marks the first substantial and authoritative effort to close this gap. Colin Camerer, one of the field's leading figures, uses psychological principles and hundreds of experiments to develop mathematical theories of reciprocity, limited strategizing, and learning, which help predict what real people and companies do in strategic situations. Unifying a wealth of information from ongoing studies in strategic behavior, he takes the experimental science of behavioral economics a major step forward. He does so in lucid, friendly prose. Behavioral game theory has three ingredients that come clearly into focus in this book: mathematical theories of how moral obligation and vengeance affect the way people bargain and trust each other; a theory of how limits in the brain constrain the number of steps of "I think he thinks ..." reasoning people naturally do; and a theory of how people learn from experience to make better strategic decisions. Strategic interactions that can be explained by behavioral game theory include bargaining, games of bluffing as in sports and poker, strikes, how conventions help coordinate a joint activity, price competition and patent races, and building up reputations for trustworthiness or ruthlessness in business or life. While there are many books on standard game theory that address the way ideally rational actors operate, Behavioral Game Theory stands alone in blending experimental evidence and psychology in a mathematical theory of normal strategic behavior. It is must reading for anyone who seeks a more complete understanding of strategic thinking, from professional economists to scholars and students of economics, management studies, psychology, political science, anthropology, and biology.

Beyond Shopper Marketing: Faster Moving Consumer Goods from Sales, Marketing and Supply Chain Zynergy
After years of simply advertising to consumers, research showed the existence of an entirely new type of "super consumer". These very important people could be targeted by entirely different media. It appeared they actually took the purchase decisions for many more people based on very different motivations. The researchers called these very important consumers "shoppers". Reaching and influencing them became known as shopper marketing. Some time later, further research showed these shoppers were seriously hampered by retailer supply chain delivering only average space and demand management across the country. Like minded shoppers clustered together, and the stores they shopped in needed more space, and speedier replenishment for local tastes and preferences. Store staff across the country struggled to keep these spaces filled, and shoppers happy. Typical targeted Marketing investment actually made this position worse, increasing demand leading to increased local out of stock and unhappy shoppers. Beyond Shopper Marketing builds a playbook for a vital 3-way team between, sales, marketing and supply chain. Brands and retailers needing profitable growth have to understand the importance of moving forward on these three fronts together in zynergy. Critically this must cross the traditional boundary between sales and marketing. Budgets that often work quite independently (and often at cross-purposes) can easily be many times more effective simply by being placed in the context of a single new objective. You don't need more money you just need the budget you currently spend to work together better. "In life, as in football, you won't go far unless you know where the goalposts are" - Arnold Glasgow

The Bodhrán

The Bodhrán

In the past fifty years, the bodhrÁn, or traditional Irish circular frame drum, has undergone a rapid evolution in development. Traditionally, it is a shallow drum ranging from ten to twenty-six inches in diameter, covered in goatskin on the top (or drum) side and open on the other. Unlike any other instrument associated with Irish traditional music, the bodhrÁn has been dramatically altered by its confrontation with modern instrument design, performance techniques, and musical practice. Colin Harte's The BodhrÁn: Experimentation, Innovation, and the Traditional Irish Frame Drum presents a definitive history of the bodhrÁn from its early origins to its present-day resurgence in Irish American folk music. The bodhrÁn has global roots and bears many characteristics of older drums from northern Africa and the Middle East. Harte picks up on these basic similarities and embarks on an engaging tour of the instrument's historical and organological development, gradual evolution in playing styles, and more recent history of performative practice. Drawing from a host of interviews over a multi-year period with participants primarily located in Europe and North America, this work provides a platform for multiple perspectives regarding the bodhrÁn. Participants include bodhrÁn makers, professional performers, educators, amateur musicians, historians, and enthusiasts. Growing out of rich ethnographic interviews, this book serves as the definitive reference for understanding and navigating the developments in the bodhrÁn's history, organology, performance practices, and repertoire.
Matagam Pagwa #1: Defender Down and Bleak Realities
Matagam PagwaThe history of explorer Matagam Pagwa's search for the Milky Way Galaxy and a planet safe from war for people to live circulates among the space travelers.Defender DownDefender Down is the first book in the Matagam Pagwa Series. It is the story of the crash of the battle cruiser Defender on the planet of Yovex. Yovex is suspected to be the origin and cause of the legend of the feared Ghost Ships. At great risk to their lives, six crew members rode the Defender down to the surface. When they first made contact with the Indigenous species, they were mystified at their physiology."When the battle cruiser Defender skidded to a stop on the surface of Yovex, Captain Zeff asked, 'Everyone alright' After they answered affirmatively, he unbuckled, stood up and looked around at the disorder which was once the bridge of his battle cruiser. The others got to their feet and joined him surveying the damage as Zeff asked the EXO, "Did everyone get off?""'As far as I know.' Dr. O'Casey replied. "We're the only ones crazy enough to ride this ship down. We should all be dead or committed.''Right now, committed does not sound that bad.'"Bleak RealitiesBleak Realities is second book of the Matagam Pagwa Series. It is the story of the Black Sentry's duty, betrayal, and sacrifices on the Tweed planet of Vulzar. The Black Sentry receives invaluable help from the local inhabitants: the Elros, the Trirobs, and the Orebs. Elros are a genetically engineered cross between elephants and a rhinoceros. Trirobs are genetically crossed between Weasels and Mongooses. The Orebs are large orange-eyed birds that were genetically crossed from two species of eagles and two species of bats."When the Resolute Bay entered Vulzar's atmosphere about three thousand feet above the planet, the clamshells containing weapons, ordinance, and supplies were kicked out of the rear hangars. As they began their descent toward the planet, the members of the Black Sentry jumped from their hangers in glide suits feeling the air rushing against their bodies and helmets. Their objective was to scrutinize the dense vegetation as they aimed for their designated drop zones."Suddenly pieces of red hot jagged debris took its toll cause severed and torn body parts to plummet to the ground. Their transport ship Resolute Bay had exploded above them."
