Save me from the Grave and Wise is an Irish folk song. Beethoven based his 7th symphony on the song's dread of dull scholarship and love of life, culminating in the exhilarating coda. This work has young Adeodatus, St. Augustine's bastard son, escaping his father's clutches. Augustine with Jerome and Ambrose are said the be the pillars of the Church. Their largely unreadable scholarship dominated European political thinking for over a millennium. Augustine wanted Adeodatus to following in his footsteps. Adeodatus had other ideas and thought his father personified the scribes and pharisees Jesus condemned as hypocrites. Set in late fourth century Milan, western capital of the Roman Empire at its height. Augustine was spokesman for the emperor and the imperial court, role model for elegant mannerisms in dress and deportment as well as in speech. Save me from the Grave and Wise is a lively read as well as a play for acting.
Nothing is known of the activities of Augustus from 8 to 14 AD. He issued no coins, built no marble building to further grace Rome, attended no functions or ceremonies, reviewed no armies. Then, during the 100 days before his death he was back being as hyperactive as normal. He attended official functions in Rome, travelled down to his villa on Capri, crossed over to Naples to start and attend the games, even indulged in horseplay with the athletes, went to Beneventum to review troops Tiberius was about to lead into battle across the Adriatic, then he retired to the old family home in Nola. He died there in the room where his father had died 65 years previously; with his five year old son in attendance. Augustus died there the third hour after noon on the 19th Augustus 8 AD. In 1969, Colin Kirkwood took on the job of Area Principal for Adult Education in north-east Derbyshire. There he formed a remarkable creative partnership with Rob Hunter, a brilliant young Community Worker. This is the story of their collaboration and dialogue with the people of Staveley, a small coal, steel and chemicals town in the north-midlands of England. Together they created the local newspaper, Staveley Now, the Staveley Disabled Group, the Staveley Festival and much else. Community Work and Adult Education in Staveley, North-East Derbyshire celebrates this important collaboration by drawing on letters, interviews, poems, issues of the local newspaper and reports and articles written at the time. The research and critical assessment of their work together in the early 1970s can be linked with that of Paulo Freire in Latin America and throughout the world.

This account of William Kirkpatrick of Malaga reveals for the first time a remarkable man only occasionally mentioned in the numerous biographies of his famous granddaughter, the Empress Eugenie. As United States Consul in Malaga between 1800 and 1817, William Kirkpatrick was a strong advocate of the US Navy's role in combating the Barbary Corsairs. His Consular work, business enterprises and extensive European and American connections are explored using new sources. These show that the Kirkpatricks of Dumfriesshire who settled in Spain in the 1730s were an enterprising family of international merchants. Allied with similar families from across Europe, the Kirkpatricks revolutionised trade and industry in southern Spain and even had a hand in introducing grapevines to Australia. The Kirkpatrick family received wide attention when Eugenie, aided by her mother the formidable Maria Manuela, Countess de Montijo, made a spectacular marriage to Napoleon III and became Empress Regent of France, a confidante of Queen Victoria, and an iconic figure in 19th Century Europe.After a wide-ranging business career in Africa, Colin Carlin now lives in Bath where he is associated with a leading contemporary art gallery.
