Curt Glaser (1879-1943) was a versatile scholar: he first studied medicine and then, probably at the suggestion of his wife, who was very interested in art, art history, and earned doctorates in both subjects. From 1909, he worked as curator of the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) until 1924, when he succeeded Peter Jessen as director of the State Art Library, a position he lost in 1933 due to Nazi racial laws. He foresaw the catastrophe and immediately emigrated to Switzerland and Italy until he arrived in the USA in 1940, where he died in 1943. Glaser turned the art library into a center of Berlin's art life - he organized exhibitions, held regular events in his large official residence (a kind of salon, whose soul was Mrs. Glaser), maintained close contacts with modern artists (he "discovered" Edvard Munch, for example), wrote regular art reviews for newspapers and magazines, was a prolific writer, and was intensely involved with East Asian art, on which he also published. His book on Japanese theater was edited by no less than Otto K mmel, director of the East Asian Art Department and an art historian of East Asia who was widely feared as a critic. His work on The Representation of Space in Japanese Painting was published as early as 1908. Despite his many activities and achievements, Glaser was quickly forgotten - early emigration and death during the World War before he could put down roots in the USA - contributed to this. It was only the efforts of his heirs to restitute his art collection that brought him brief publicity, not least thanks to an opulent work on Glaser as a collector. This book deals with a hitherto largely neglected facet of Glaser's work, namely his interest in Japanese art, with which Glaser and his wife became familiar during a lengthy trip to Japan in 1911. In the first half of the twentieth century, psychology was a discipline in search of scientific legitimacy. Debates raged over how much of human and animal behavior is instinctive and how much is learned, and how behavior could be quantified accurately. At the Johns Hopkins University's new Phipps Psychiatric Clinic, Curt P. Richter stood aside from these heated theoretical arguments, choosing instead to apply his data-collection methods, innovative measurement techniques, playful sense of exploration, and consummate surgical skill to laboratory examinations of the biological basis of behavior. From identifying the biological clocks that govern behavior and physiology to observing the self-regulation of nutrient levels by the body, the cyclical nature of some mental illnesses, and the causes of hopelessness, Richter's wide-ranging discoveries not only influenced the burgeoning field of psychobiology and paved the way for later researchers but also often had implications for the treatment of patients in the clinic. At the time of his death in 1988, Richter left behind a massive collection of laboratory data. For this book, Jay Schulkin mined six decades of Richter's archived research data, personal documents, and interviews to flesh out an engaging portrait of a "laboratory artisan" in the context of his work.

Curt Flood in the Media examines the public discourse surrounding Curt Flood (1938-1997), the star center fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals throughout the sixties. In 1969, Flood was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. At the time, all Major League Baseball players were subject to the reserve clause, which essentially bound a player to work in perpetuity for his original team, unless traded for another player or sold for cash, in which case he worked under the same reserve conditions for the next team.Flood refused the trade on a matter of principle, arguing that Major League Baseball had violated both U.S. antitrust laws and the 13th Amendment's prohibition of involuntary servitude. In a defiant letter to Commissioner Bowie Kuhn asking for his contractual release, Flood infamously wrote, ""after twelve years in the major leagues, I do not feel that I am a piece of property to be bought and sold irrespective of my wishes."" Most significantly, Flood appeared on national television with Howard Cosell and described himself as a ""well-paid slave."" Explosive controversy ensued.Khan examines the ways in which the media constructed the case and Flood's persona. By examining the mainstream press, the black press, and primary sources, including Flood's autobiography, Khan exposes the complexities of what it means to be a prominent black American athlete--in 1969 and today.
