Four absurdist novelettes explore revolution, espionage, social strife, cars, motorcycles, and horses. In "Space, Time, and Tania," bumbling ex-Texas Department of Public Death officer Marty Brimfeeler probes the death of a brainwashed terrorist. Traumatized by finding Tania's cryptic notebook full of edgy metaphysical queries, Marty flees Houston on a dynamite-festooned motorcycle as World War III erupts. "Man Against the Horses " describes how five horses in Paris, Texas have finally had enough. They break out of their corral, charge down the highway, and, imbued with fresh superpowers, reduce the city of Dallas to rubble. In "The Highland Park Cadillac Races," hapless insurance executive Bobby Thompson, plagued by numerous philosophical qualms, proves his manhood on the mean streets of Dallas. Finally, "The 66,000 M.P.H. Bicycle" showcases special agent Atoka surveilling Houston on his nuclear-powered bicycle until software glitches trap him on a coastal freeway.

On January, 2016, Dave Reitze the Director of the Laser Interferometric Gravity Wave Observatory (LIGO) called Michael Smith at home...did he want to be included as a co-author on the historic scientific paper that was about to be announced and published in Physical Review Letters; GW151226: "Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Merger?"OH, MY GOD WE DID IT The gravity wave signals were detected on September 14, 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC-first at Livingston, LA, and 7 milliseconds later at Hanford, WA, within the speed of light travel time between the two sites. The LIGO detectors heard the last one-half second of a primordial song, 1.2 billion years ago This remarkable event provided the first direct proof of Einstein's theory of general relativity, and his prediction of gravity waves emitted from the merger of two black holes, each one approximately 30 times more massive than our own sun. This memoir is about a seventeen-year odyssey that began in 1996, when Michael Smith joined the Laser Interferometer Gravity Wave Observatory (LIGO) design team at Caltech. This book will take you through the inner workings of a complex scientific development project funded by the National Science Foundation-seen through his struggles, tribulations, and joys as he prevailed in the emotional and technical challenges of creating something never undertaken before. He was one of those thousand little turtles at the bottom of the pond who designed and built the LIGO detectors at the two sites-Livingston, LA, and Hanford, WA, and who held up the three luminaries-Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne, and Barry Barish-on their backs atop the LIGO pyramid, rising higher than the sun and basking in the glory of their Nobel Prize 2017 in Physics...and unlike the Dr. Seuss story, "Yertle the Turtle," he didn't burp This is also the story of an ongoing love affair with Frances Mayes' Tuscany, Brunello di Montalcino wine, and the lovely Rainbow Face who would finally marry Michael.

Why our current system of higher education is financially and morally unsustainable and how to address the crisis with the creative implementation of digital technologies. For too long, our system of higher education has been defined by scarcity: scarcity in enrollment, scarcity in instruction, and scarcity in credentials. In addition to failing students professionally, we have seen how this system has exacerbated social injustice and socioeconomic stratification across the globe. In The Abundant University, Michael D. Smith argues that the only way to create a financially and morally sustainable higher education system is by embracing digital technologies for enrolling, instructing, and credentialing students--the same technologies that we have seen create abundance in access to resources in industry after industry. The Abundant University explains how we got our current system, why it's such an expensive, inefficient mess, and how a system based on exclusivity necessarily cannot foster inclusivity. Further, Smith challenges the resistance to digital technologies that we have already seen among numerous institutions, citing the examples of faculty resistance toward digital learning platforms. While acknowledging the understandable self-preservation instinct for our current system of residential education, Smith makes a case for how technology can engender greater educational opportunity and create changes that will benefit students, employers, and society as a whole.

How big data is transforming the creative industries, and how those industries can use lessons from Netflix, Amazon, and Apple to fight back."[The authors explain] gently yet firmly exactly how the internet threatens established ways and what can and cannot be done about it. Their book should be required for anyone who wishes to believe that nothing much has changed."-The Wall Street Journal"Packed with examples, from the nimble-footed who reacted quickly to adapt their businesses, to laggards who lost empires."-Financial TimesTraditional network television programming has always followed the same script: executives approve a pilot, order a trial number of episodes, and broadcast them, expecting viewers to watch a given show on their television sets at the same time every week. But then came Netflix's House of Cards. Netflix gauged the show's potential from data it had gathered about subscribers' preferences, ordered two seasons without seeing a pilot, and uploaded the first thirteen episodes all at once for viewers to watch whenever they wanted on the devices of their choice. In this book, Michael Smith and Rahul Telang, experts on entertainment analytics, show how the success of House of Cards upended the film and TV industries-and how companies like Amazon and Apple are changing the rules in other entertainment industries, notably publishing and music. We're living through a period of unprecedented technological disruption in the entertainment industries. Just about everything is affected: pricing, production, distribution, piracy. Smith and Telang discuss niche products and the long tail, product differentiation, price discrimination, and incentives for users not to steal content. To survive and succeed, businesses have to adapt rapidly and creatively. Smith and Telang explain how.How can companies discover who their customers are, what they want, and how much they are willing to pay for it? Data. The entertainment industries, must learn to play a little "moneyball." The bottom line: follow the data.

Offering a new perspective on male prostitution, In the Company of Men employs qualitative methodology to present a real-world view of the issues, both obvious and obscure, surrounding the world's "second-oldest profession."In the Company of Men: Inside the Lives of Male Prostitutes is the only book to document male prostitution from the perspective of a group of men working for a single male escort agency. The in-depth account goes behind the scenes to shed light on the very hidden world of Internet male escorts, their customers, and the niche they inhabit in modern American society. At the same time, it has much to tell us about post-modern identity, culture, and sexuality—and the transformative influence of the Internet on sexual behavior and male prostitution.Through numerous interviews, the book examines the sometimes-dichotomous relationship between the image men convey and the lengths to which they go in order to meet their most private needs. Readers travel down a cyber Sunset Boulevard to see what attracts young men to work as escorts, how an escort agency serves economic and personal goals, and how a community can evolve among the men involved.
