"An evening with D.V. is almost as marvelous as an evening with D.V. herself--same magic, same spontaneity and, above all, never a boring moment. --Bill BlassBrilliant, funny, charming, imperious, Diana Vreeland--the fashion editor of Harper's Bazaar and editor-in-chief of Vogue--was a woman whose passion and genius for style helped define the world of high fashion for fifty years. Among her eclectic circle of friends were some of the most renowned and famous figures of the twentieth century--artists and princes, movie stars and international legends, including Chanel, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Isak Dinesen, Clark Gable, and Swifty Lazar.Moving from English palaces to the nightclubs of 1930s Paris, the wilds of Wyoming to the exclusive venues of New York high society, D.V. takes readers into this iconic woman's dazzling life, evoking the luxury and brio of an era that encompassed Josephine Baker, England's Queen Mary, Buffalo Bill, and Diaghilev.Vibrant with the vivid, irresistible voice that elevated every t te- -t te and dinner party, D.V. brings this renowned and uninhibited raconteur alive, whether recalling herself as a young girl, her search for the perfect red, her piquant observations about her world, or her abhorrence for nostalgia. Like her legacy, Vreeland's story, told in her own words, is a classic to be celebrated by both loyal admirers and a new generation of culture mavens and style savants.

SE 5a vs Albatros D V

SE 5a vs Albatros D V

Amid the ongoing quest for aerial superiority during World War I, the late spring of 1917 saw two competing attempts to refine proven designs. The Royal Aircraft Factory SE 5a incorporated improvements to the original SE 5 airframe along with 50 more horsepower to produce a fast, reliable ace-maker. The Albatros D V, a sleeker looking development of the deadly D III of 'Bloody April' notoriety, proved to be more disappointing as it suffered a rash of lower wing failures. Nevertheless, Albatrosen remained the most numerically important fighters available when the Germans launched their final offensive on 21 March 1918. Despite its shortcomings, German tactics and skill made the Albatros D V a dangerous foe that SE 5a pilots dismissed at their peril. This title tells the story of the design and development of these two fighters and concludes with their dramatic fights in the last year of World War I.

Can Your Heart Stand the Shocking Facts? by Dr. Brentwood Masterling, M.F.A., D.V.M., Ph. D.
(a parody by Daniel M. Kimmel)Daniel M. Kimmel has made us think about film as the veteran critic who wrote the Hugo finalist Jar Jar Binks Must Die... and other observations about science fiction movies. He's made us laugh as the author of Shh It's a Secret: a novel about aliens, Hollywood, and the Bartender's Guide, Time on My Hands: My Misadventures in Time Travel, and Father of the Bride of Frankenstein. Now, for the first time anywhere, in the guise of his pompous alter ego Dr. Brentwood Masterling, M.F.A., D.V.M., Ph. D., he gets to do both. Can Your Heart Stand the Shocking Facts? is indeed a "deep dive" into the world of director Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s Golden Turkey Award winner for Worst Film, Plan 9 from Outer Space. In it, Dr. Masterling provides an annotated complete transcript of the movie, along with an essay about Wood, and several questions for further discussion. Herein you'll learn how star Bela Lugosi cleverly died before the film was even made, and how Plan 1 had been to bring a gift basket to Earth. Is any of it true? As the Amazing Criswell asks in the film's stirring climax, "Can you prove that it didn't happen?"
