Mixed martial arts (MMA) is an emergent sport where competitors in a ring or cage utilize strikes (punches, kicks, elbows and knees) as well as submission techniques to defeat opponents. This book explores the carnal experience of fighting through a sensory ethnography of MMA, and how it transgresses the cultural scripts of masculinity in popular culture. Based on four years of participant observation in a local MMA club and in-depth interviews with amateur and professional MMA fighters, Spencer documents fighters' training regimes and the meanings they attach to participation in the sport. Drawing from the philosophical phenomenology of Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Jean-Luc Nancy, this book develops bodies-centered ontological and epistemological grounding for this study. Guided by such a position, it places bodies at the center of analysis of MMA and elucidates the embodied experience of pain and injury, and the sense and rhythms of fighting.

The Silver Lining: How Values Triumph Over Circumstance
Dale C. Stapleton was born to parents who grew up in the deep poverty of Appalachia. Through his parents' tenacious bravery and example, he rose out of those circumstances, going to college to become an engineer. This memoir explores his roots and examines the path beyond those circumstances. Inspired by the values his parents gave to him, the author explores the path of an engineer, as well as what it means to be a son, a father, and a husband, as he deals with first his father's death, then a son's addition, and finally his wife's illness. What was it like to be born to parents so attached to the particular geography of Appalachia? How did the author develop the grit to leave and explore a new environment as well as a new set of circumstances? What triumphs came with that journey? What pains? What is the meaning of family, and how do values anchor us in the life we were born into as well as propelling us into the life we design for ourselves? What happens when bad things come, like addiction and illness, and how do values continue to determine our path and direct our decisions? An exploration of family that will inspire.
Economic Interdependence and War

Economic Interdependence and War

Does growing economic interdependence among great powers increase or decrease the chance of conflict and war? Liberals argue that the benefits of trade give states an incentive to stay peaceful. Realists contend that trade compels states to struggle for vital raw materials and markets. Moving beyond the stale liberal-realist debate, Economic Interdependence and War lays out a dynamic theory of expectations that shows under what specific conditions interstate commerce will reduce or heighten the risk of conflict between nations. Taking a broad look at cases spanning two centuries, from the Napoleonic and Crimean wars to the more recent Cold War crises, Dale Copeland demonstrates that when leaders have positive expectations of the future trade environment, they want to remain at peace in order to secure the economic benefits that enhance long-term power. When, however, these expectations turn negative, leaders are likely to fear a loss of access to raw materials and markets, giving them more incentive to initiate crises to protect their commercial interests. The theory of trade expectations holds important implications for the understanding of Sino-American relations since 1985 and for the direction these relations will likely take over the next two decades. Economic Interdependence and War offers sweeping new insights into historical and contemporary global politics and the actual nature of democratic versus economic peace.

An Economist Biggest Book of the YearHow commerce determines whether America preserves the peace or goes to warWhen the Cold War ended, many believed that expanding trade would usher in an era of peace. Yet today the United States finds itself confronting not just Russia in Europe but China in the Indo-Pacific, Africa, and Latin America. Shedding new light on how trade both reduces and increases the risks of international crisis, A World Safe for Commerce traces how, since the nation’s founding, the United States has consistently moved from peace to conflict when the commerce needed for national security is under threat.Dale Copeland shows how commerce pushes the United States and its rivals to expand their spheres of influence for access to goods even as they worry about provoking a breakdown in trade relations that could spiral into military conflict. Taking readers from the wars with Britain in 1776 and 1812 to World War II and the Cold War, he describes how America’s leaders have grappled with this inherent tension, and why they have shifted, sometimes dramatically, from peaceful, mutually beneficial policies to coercion and force in order to increase control over vital trade and prevent economic decline.A World Safe for Commerce reveals how trade competition could lead the United States and China into full-scale confrontation. But it also offers hope that both sides can work to improve their overall trade expectations and foster the confidence needed for long-term peace and stability.

We simultaneously want to be different, yet are afraid of being different. In STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD, you'll discover the secret to having others say: You don't think like other people do. You see the world differently than others do. You see things others don't see. Yet what you say makes perfect sense. It's by overcoming natural tendencies each of us possesses by virtue of our humanity that you retrain your mind to think counterintuitively and, in doing so, distinguish yourself in ways others admire. As more and more people become aware of your ability to see things they don't see, they'll seek your involvement in their initiatives. You'll no longer have to pursue opportunities, they'll pursue you. STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD teaches you how to retrain your mind to see what others don't see and, in the process, generate more opportunities than you imagined possible.
Who Influenced Whom?

Who Influenced Whom?

Dale C. Tatum

Who Influenced Whom? is an analysis of the global-strategic security concerns of the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. To that end, eight asymmetric relations between the Cold War superpowers and the Third World countries are analyzed in terms of strategic, political, and ideological relationships. Tatum maintains the amount of power a country possesses is not proportional to the influence it has in a given situation and, ultimately, diplomatic skill is the key to successful foreign policy. The author demonstrates how the ability to bargain is oftentimes more powerful than political influence.
