This book is a selection of pictures that my father, Andrew A. Victorine, had in his photo collection. He was born in 1898 on the Victorine Ranch on the California coast, just south of Monterey. He was a treasure trove of knowledge concerning people, places and events in that area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I didn't pay enough attention to his stories when I was young, but I still remember how much he'd enjoy discussing his memories with my aunts and uncles. Fortunately, he did some interviews, and wrote down quite a bit of his memories. I'm including some of those notes to help give some context to the pictures - and to give my father a chance to tell his own story.

This collection of piano music spans the years 1975 to 2012 - the first in the collection having been written at the age of 19. My music is tonal, and seeks to express quiet moments of reflection and joy. An early work, "The Zodiac Suite" presents each astrological sign. Some of those movements were also portraits of family and friends. You'll also find a feeling of gentle Americana in many of these works. It ends with a full-fledged ragtime - "The Gilroy Rag" and a three movement suite, "Reflections".

"The first movement of my Sonata for Flute and Piano in G, Op. 102, written in 2010, depicts images and feelings from my childhood growing up in the California hills. The oaks, poppies, lupine, chaparral - and everything about those hills are a deep inspiration - and a treasured place I escape to, both literally, and in my mind. I wrote the melody for the second movement in 1988 as part of incidental music for a staged poetry recital by Vera Sgutt Taicher. The poem was about the pain experienced when one is not able to be with their beloved. I found myself remembering the melody over the years, then finally used it in this sonata.
