A visit to an abandoned Polish Jewish cemetery in 1993 launches Dan Oren's twenty-year search to solve the mystery of "Who is buried in Sarah's tomb?" A visit with a cousin unearths a breathtaking photograph of a Berlin family wedding from 1926 and leads to discovering their unimaginable post-wedding lives. An archivist in Prague discovers a secret uncle whose celebrity-filled life takes the reader from the halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the treasures of the Vatican. Finding and linking hitherto unknown family--from as ordinary any of us to as internationally-recognized as Philip Roth--this collection of gripping investigative accounts transforms genealogy into a world of exciting historical adventures. When an archbishop, a minister, and a rabbi meet in a cemetery, it is not the set-up for a joke. Rather, The Wedding Photo becomes a dramatic and meaningful encounter of Christians and Jews with the darkest and the brightest sides of humanity.

This unique and richly informative addition to American educational, religious, and cultural history examines the college life of Jews at Yale from the first Jewish graduate in 1809 to the present time, drawing comparisons to the Jewish experience at other elite colleges and universities and to the experiences of other minorities at Yale. In this revised edition, Oren draws on new interviews and references to present the dramatic events of the past twenty years, describing the tensions between majority and minority cultures in an academic world increasingly committed to inclusiveness and the solidification of meritocracy. Reviews of the earlier edition “An admirably probing and balanced account of a subject that was up to now considered taboo.” —Lewis Coser “Dan A. Oren’s meticulous research reveals how the traditional exclusivist conception of Yale University evolved gradually over time, and with what consequences for Jews and other original outsiders. . . . Judicious in tone, balanced and fluently written.” —A.J. Sherman, Times Literary Supplement “A richly researched and well-written book.” —Naomi W. Cohen, American Historical Review “A most complete, thoroughly researched, and well documented history.” —Melvin Ezer, Educational Studies Dan A. Oren, M.D., is associate professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine.

This is a memoir of a martial arts champion, a man who at various times during the 70s, '80 and 90s was THE competitor to beat in point karate competition. At least twice he was the top-ranked fighter in the United States during a rough and tumble period of competition that at times was all about blood letting and knockouts. Dan takes the reader from his very first lesson at 14 years of age all the way to his 50s when he won a national title in the seniors division. Along this journey we see a man, a self-described martial arts fanatic who even lived in a karate school for a couple of years, progress to be a martial arts competition genius, who was admired by as many competitors and fans as those who despised him. But no matter what side you were on, you could not ignore his explosive skill and his ability to bring a tournament crowd to their collect feet. This is the story of a man who over the years reached the top step in the subculture of martial arts point competition and in so doing became humble. While taking the reader on his extraordinary climb to the top, he never lets us forget that point competition was a game, a violent one, but nonetheless a game. This is an incredible story that every martial artist should read.

Boy: A Holocaust Story

Boy: A Holocaust Story

A cobblestone road. A sunny day. A soldier. A gun. A child, arms high in the air. A moment captured on film. But what is the history behind arguably the most recognizable photograph of the Holocaust? "The Boy" presents the stories of three Nazi criminals, ranging in status from SS sergeant to low-ranking SS officer to SS general. It is also the story of two Jewish victims, a teenage girl and a young boy, who encounter these Nazis in Warsaw in the spring of 1943. The book is remarkable in its scope, picking up the lives of these participants in the years preceding World War I and following them to their deaths. One of the Nazis managed to stay at large for twenty-two years. One of the survivors lived long enough to lose a son in the Yom Kippur War. Nearly sixty photographs dispersed throughout help narrate these five lives. And, in keeping with the emotional immediacy of those photographs, Porat has deliberately used a narrative style that, drawing upon extensive research, experience, and oral interviews, places the reader in the middle of unfolding events.

My life on Hayabusa. 100,000 km on a motorcycle is a story about friendship and fear, temptation and speed. The main character gradually discovers his passion for engines, while frequently going on motorcycle journeys with his friends. Speed and adrenaline often draw him into a dangerous whirlpool, but he manages to shirk it every time because death can lurk at every turn. A novel built on 200 horsepower, the landscapes of Romania, a continuous action and an unpredictable end. "(...) Hayabusa is a legend. I knew the legend, studied it, and fully assimilated it. And then, within minutes, I was on the verge of taming it (...) In over thousands of miles spent together, we were able to help each other, to get out of dangerous situations and to enjoy the qualities in each of us. We both were living a dream. "
Political Stability and Democracy in Mexico

Political Stability and Democracy in Mexico

Dan A. Cothran

Praeger Publishers Inc
1994
sidottu
Mexico stands apart for having been ruled by one political party since the 1920s, and this study examines the remarkable political stability Mexico has experienced over the past seven decades. Cothran argues that the country's unusual stability has been the result of the interaction of six factors: the institutionalized nature of the political system; the effectiveness of the regime in achieving rapid economic growth; the adaptability of the regime to emerging pressures; the cohesiveness of the political elites; the judicious use of coercion; and Mexico's proximity to the United States. However, this historical stability is facing new challenges in the 1990s. The author analyzes the changing political, social, and economic landscape in Mexico, and forecasts whether and how Mexico's semi-authoritarian political system will survive.
Religion and Social System of the Vira' saiva Community
Using original religious-philosophical texts and sociological research, the author explores the various dimensions of the Virasaiva religious tradition. His sociological analyses of the monastic organization and social structure, the family and the community, the roles of women, and the future of the community emphasize the intricate relationship between religion and the social system. This study of a largely unknown religious community demonstrates how the followers of Virasaivism, known as Lingayats, have been adapting to the changing milieu in North America while retaining the religion's core values. Dr. Chekki shows the interplay between tradition and modernity as the Virasaivas attempt to maintain a distinct identity while adopting the ways of modern culture.
