Two Cities

Two Cities

Since the late eighteenth century the ideals of political democracy and individual flourishing have become so entangled that most people no longer differentiate them. The American transcendentalists did. Two Cities is the first comprehensive account of the original but still underrated political thought of this movement, especially that of its three major authors: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau. For decades, Daniel S. Malachuk contends, readers have misinterpreted the Transcendentalists as worshipping democracy and secularizing personhood. Two Cities proves the opposite. Focusing on their major writings, Malachuk presents the Transcendentalists as wresting apart and thus clarifying democracy as a profane project and individuality as a sacred one. Building upon this basic insight, the book affirms many recent but discrete conclusions about the movement's various contributions (especially to liberalism, environmentalism, and public religion) and shows that we will understand how these commitments hang together only when we ""re-transcendentalize the Transcendentalists.""In five useful chapters-on the two-cities tradition within the history of liberalism, on the rival and subsequently dominant ""overlap"" theories of Lincoln and others, and on the unique contributions to two-cities thought by each of the major authors-Two Cities reintroduces readers to the Transcendentalists as among the most original and important contributors to American political thought.

Literature for a Society of Equals defends modern equality and seeks its best literature. It accuses equality’s supposed friends on the left of attenuating this world-redefining relationship into a collection of rights and goods to distribute, secularizing it even as the right keeps sacralizing hierarchies, and optimistically handing it over to time to make it happen. In contrast, loyal to equality as modernity’s revolutionary invention, the writers examined here—from Mary Shelley to Gwendolyn Brooks to Ta-Nehisi Coates—envision "relational equality" as lately recovered by philosophers like Elizabeth Anderson and historians like Pierre Rosanvallon. Literary scholars need to reread these "pessimist egalitarians," too, though, for the discipline has failed them in the same three ways: i.e., attenuating and secularizing these writers’ portraits of equality but most of all insisting the sympathy generated by reading these texts will, with enough time, "expand the circle" of humanity. For students and teachers of literature at the university level, this volume is a guide to those writings that champion equality as relational, sacred, and ours—not time's—to realize.

The book of Daniel is one of mystery and intrigue, predicting the future and providing instruction and an example of how to live in these last days. Gaining an understanding of Daniel's end-time mystery is reserved alone for the wise in the latter days (12:10). The wise are defined as those seeking to understand Bible prophecy, thereby discerning the signs of the times. The end-time message to the wise is to stand firm and take action (11:32a). Standing firm is to remain faithful (cf. Rev. 2:10) and hold fast (cf. Rev. 3:11) to sound biblical doctrine. Taking action is to warn others (cf. Col. 1:28, 29), making the most of the time (cf. Eph. 5:16), bringing understanding (11:33), which produces purity through repentance (12:3, 10).Through a careful exposition of the book of Daniel, in his book, Daniel's Divulgement, Dr. Marc Wheway brings revelation and clarity to the ancient mystery. Until now, few have understood the concealed and closed (12:4,9) writings of Daniel. However, we live in the day that troubled Daniel greatly (7:15, 28), where understanding was promised (12:4b). In fulfillment of an end-time sign (12:4b). God has revealed the mystery to the wise, granting knowledge and understanding of the latter days.

The hostile regime that set out to annihilate the Jewish religion and culture forms the background of the Book of Daniel. Jin Hee Han's book, Daniel's Spiel: Apocalyptic Literacy in the Book of Daniel, identifies the main agenda behind the creation of the book of Daniel, explaining how Daniel promotes an alternative discourse in opposition to the Hellenistic regime in the second century B.C.E. The word "Spiel" in the title refers to Daniel's strategy of using apocalyptic language to give the people hope, as he offered them a discourse of resistance meant to keep alive their anticipation of God's inevitable triumph over the evil regime that tormented them. Author Jin Hee Han provides modern readers with useful insights into why the Book of Daniel was created and offers clues of how it might be interpreted today.

"Go your way Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end...none of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand." (Daniel 12:9-10)The Archangel Michael told Daniel that the prophecies would be sealed until the time of the end. Discover how the prophecies in the book of Daniel are being unsealed in the events taking place today.Since Daniel was told that the wise will understand the message and lead many to righteousness, while the wicked will not grasp its meaning and will continue in their wickedness, it is imperative for everyone living in these end times to diligently examine and attempt to comprehend the vital message Daniel has recorded for us.Daniel's visions were given for those living at the time of the end. The wise will diligently search the word of the Lord and ask for wisdom in order to understand God's plan as outlined in Daniel's five visions.1) Daniel 2 - Covers the entire time of the Gentiles from 605-6 BC when the first dispersion of the Jews (Diaspora) took place until the time in the very near future when a remnant will flee from the persecution under the Antichrist for 31/2 years.2) Daniel 7 - The four beasts in chapter 7 are different from the four kingdoms in chapter 2. They represent four nations that arise at the time of the end just prior to the second coming of Christ. Two of the four beasts have already surfaced (Great Britain and Russia), and the two remaining beasts: the Arab coalition of countries and the alliance of the United States and Europe are about to emerge on the world scene.3) Daniel 8 - Daniel's little horn in this chapter corresponds with the false prophet in the book of Revelation. This deceitful person will destroy many by peace and cause everyone to worship the coming Antichrist.4) Daniel 9 - God's extended period of grace was shown to the Jewish people over a period of 70 weeks of years or 490 years (7 x 70). Discover the wonderful message God has for all of humanity in one of the most misunderstood Scriptures concerning the latter days. This vision reflects God's unlimited forgiveness Jesus brings to anyone who will call upon Him. 5) Daniel 10-12 - The final vision of the time of the end, which was delivered by the preincarnate Christ, covers the final 31/2 years before the second coming of Christ. Discover important startling events that the Prophet Daniel tells us are about to take place as these end time prophecies are fulfilled before our eyes. When Jesus came the first time, the wise men of the day were aware of His soon arrival and they were actively looking for Him. Daniel's visions were given in order for people to know what to expect during these lasts days. Jesus is coming again very soon. Now, more than ever, we must prepare. We need to ask ourselves if we are really ready. Just as important, are we helping others prepare? Today, those who are wise will be passionately sharing this message and helping others prepare. Those doing so will "shine like the stars forever and ever."May the Lord grant us a heart of wisdom to understand the time we are living in so we can prepare for what lies ahead
