"Harmon's Journal" - the first published English-language journal written in BC - is a lively, engaging story that, unlike other early journals, captures the rough-and-tumble life of a fur trader and explorer in the western Canada of 200 years ago. Harmon's descriptions of the cultures and customs of the people he met provide important observations of various First Nations almost before they were touched by European culture. He also details activities of the traders and explorers with whom he exchanged letters - such notable personalities as David Thompson, Simon Fraser and John Stuart. Harmon writes with honesty and often raw emotion in his accounts of his travels and adventures, and his reflections are often profound. "Harmon's Journal" is the authentic 1957 edition of the journal edited by esteemed historian William Kaye Lamb.

The second volume of the New South African Review (NSAR) continues a tradition of debate and critical, analytical scholarship about contemporary South Africa. Drawing on authors from academia and beyond, it aims to be informative, discursive and provocative. In this volume, the New Growth Path (NGP) adopted by the South African government in 2010 provides the basis for a debate about whether 'decent work' is the best possible solution to South Africa's problems of low economic growth and high unemployment. Rising inequality is explored against the backdrop of the failings of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE). The NGP's proposals for 'greening the economy' are discussed, with emphasis on the creation of 'green jobs' and biofuels. The volume also includes investigations into the crisis of acid mine drainage on the Witwatersrand, and other persistent environmental challenges. Possibilities for participatory forms of government are surveyed, and civil society activism is explored in relation to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and environmental campaigns. The crisis in child care in public hospitals, the difficulties that characterise attempts at building relationships between the police and a township community, and the problems related to the absence of legislation to govern the powers of traditional authorities over land allocation (through the experience of the Eastern Cape) are also featured. Asking whether the NGP reflects a set of new policies or an attempt to re-dress old (com)promises in new clothes, this volume brings together different voices in debate about possibilities for alternatives to neo-liberal and capitalist development in South Africa.

The Art of Uncertainty

The Art of Uncertainty

The Victorian novel developed unique forms of reasoning under uncertainty-of thinking, judging, and acting in the face of partial knowledge and unclear outcome. George Eliot, Wilkie Collins, William Thackeray, Thomas Hardy, and later Joseph Conrad drew on science, mathematics, philosophy, and the law to articulate a phenomenology of uncertainty against emergent models of prediction and decision-making. In imaginative explorations of unsure reasoning, hesitant judgment, and makeshift action, these novelists cultivated distinctive responses to uncertainty as intellectual concern and cultural disposition, participating in the knowledge work of an era shaped by numerical approaches to the future. Reading for uncertainty yields a rich account of the dynamics of thinking and acting, a fresh understanding of realism as a genre of the probable, and a vision of literary-critical judgment as provisional and open-ended. Daniel Williams spotlights the value of literary art in a present marked by models and technologies of prediction.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Generalized Vehicle Dynamics

Generalized Vehicle Dynamics

Author Daniel E. Williams, an industry professional with more 30 years of experience in chassis control systems from concept to launch, brings this experience and his unique approach to readers of Generalized Vehicle Dynamics. This book makes use of nomenclature and conventions not used in other texts. This combination allows the derivation of complex vehicles that roll with multiple axles, any of which can be steered, to be directly predicted by manipulation of a generalized model. Similarly the ride characteristics of such a generalized vehicle are derived. This means the vehicle dynamic behavior of these vehicles can be directly written from the results derived in this work, and there is no need to start from Newton's Second Law to create such insight. Using new and non-standard conventions allows wider applicability to complex vehicles, including autonomous vehicles.Generalized Vehicle Dynamics is divided into two main sections-ride and handling-with roll considered in both. Each section concludes with a case study that applies the concepts presented in the preceding chapters to actual vehicles. Chapters include Simple Suspension as a Linear Dynamic System, The Quarter-Car Model, The Pitch Plane Model, The Roll Plane Mode, Active Suspension to Optimize Ride, Handling Basics, Reference Frames, New Conventions, Two-Axle Yaw Plane Model, Rear Axle Steering and Lanekeeping, Two-Axle Vehicles that Roll, Three-Axle Vehicle Dynamics, Generalized Multi-Axle Vehicle Dynamics and Automated Vehicle Architecture from Vehicle Dynamics. "A fresh and more inclusive book that lays out much new material in vehicle dynamics." - L. Daniel Metz, Ph.D.

In Wales Unchained Daniel G. Williams explores how Welsh writers, politicians and intellectuals have defined themselves – and have been defined by others – since the early twentieth century. Whether by exploring ideas of race in the 1930s or reflecting on the metaphoric uses of boxing, asking what it means to inhabit the ‘American century’ or probing the linguistic bases of cultural identity, Williams writes with a rare blend of theoretical sophistication and accessible clarity. This book discusses Rhys Davies in relation to D. H. Lawrence, explores the simultaneous impact that Dylan Thomas and saxophonist Charlie Parker had on the Beat Generation in 1950s America, and juxtaposes the uses made of class and ethnicity in the thought of Aneurin Bevan and Paul Robeson. Transatlantic in scope and comparative in method, this book will engage readers interested in literature, politics, history and contemporary cultural debate.

Slanderous Tongues addresses the gap in Welsh literary studies of English language poetry over the last thirty years. For the first time here is a book which looks at that subject in the round, and in its many diversities. It is distinctive too for being the work of Wales's young critics, who bring a fresh perspective to the subject while acknowledging the legacy of academics like Wynn Thomas and James A Davies.Slanderous Tongues adopts a thematic approach, exploring the field through the prisms of politics, nationhood, gender, the environment, external influences (particularly Welsh language, American and Irish), translation experimentation in form and language. Among the many poets whose work is considered are R.S. Thomas, Dannie Abse, Nigel Jenkins, Mike Jenkins, Gillian Clarke, Harri Webb, Robert Minhinnick, Tony Conran, Ruth Bidgood, John Tripp, Deryn Rees-Jones, Gwyneth Lewis, Menna Elfyn, Pascale Petit, Evan Boland and Medbh McGuckian.Lively and informed, provocative and perceptive, this specially commissioned book is a superb guide to English language poetry in Wales in the last thirty years. It will be invaluable for students from year 12 to graduate level, and their teachers and lecturers, in addition to the general reader.Editor Daniel Williams is a Senior Lecturer in the English Department at Swansea University, and Assistant Director of CREW (the Centre for Research into the English Literature and Language of Wales). He has written on a range of subjects within the field of Welsh writing in English for a wide number of books, journals and magazines.

This book is based on my own personal opinions, experiences and perspectives about Americans hating Americans. Moreover, my personal perspective of racism in America will be the main focus of this book. While the word hate is a harsh word to use, I believe it is fitting for the situation. Not only will I discuss Americans hating Americans, I will also provide some suggestions at the end of this book, offering ways, ideas, recommendations to help Americans deal with hatred among themselves
