This is the story of the most significant devotional author of the seventeenth century in his first full English language biography. Using previously unknown letters as a few of the resources, this story aims to recreate the theological, sometimes magical, and social worlds of Johann Arndt.Arndt was regarded by his peers and successive generations as either the most significant Reformer since Luther, or an uneducated and dangerous element within the Lutheran church. Later commentators have given Arndt the credit, or blame, for the founding of the Pietist movement. Arndt was a central figure in the forging of various Lutheran "orthodoxies” of the early seventeenth century and thus the first generation to attempt an interpretation of the Lutheran Confessions of Faith. He is challenged by some on the conservative right for his mystical influences, but was a hero to orthodox Lutheran Johann Gerhard. He did more than found the pietist tradition (which he actually may or may not have); he also became the father of a Lutheran spiritual, maybe mystical tradition. While this movement would only last in more extreme forms of the Lutheran church, the argument from Arndt, Gerhard, and others was that this tradition was not in conflict with the teachings of the Lutheran Confessions. It's a movement that almost was, and lives on in whispers in the church today.

There is a Psalm for just about everything. Defeated? It's there. Joyful? That's is there too. Angry with God? There are a lot of Psalms for that. Some of them give us great comfort, and some of them make us uncomfortable, but in the end, all of them point us to Jesus. This is a 60-day devotional that deals with us right where we are because that is where the Psalms deal with us. You won't find a bunch of platitudes or Christian fluff. The Psalms are too gritty and honest for that. This devotional is written by and for real sinners in daily need of a God offering real promises of forgiveness, grace, and hope.

Figure painting is one of the most intriguing and fascinating art forms. As old as human civilization, capturing the shape, and form of the human body has been one of man's most mystifying quests. In this second volume of the series "The WeekEnd Artist", the author depicted his own discovery of this fascinating subject as an amateur, without any training, and the satisfying results of exploring the beauty of the human body.

The village of Bergen, established in 1660, was the first permanent settlement in New Jersey. Now known as Hoboken and Jersey City, the marshy land on which Bergen was founded is just across the Hudson River from New York. At the beginning of this century, when this book was written, the Bergen region was still known for an old-fashioned charm. Daniel Van Winkle wrote in his preface, From its antiquity and historical importance, "Old Bergen" deserves more than a passing glance. Founded during the infancy of our country, and standing at the gateway of the continent, it was subjected during the colonial and revolutionary period to the privations and vicissitudes peculiar to those early days, to an unusual degree. The people inhabiting its territory, retaining to a great extent the characteristics and conservativeness of their forefathers, were oftentimes visited by their city neighbors, when tired and worn with the cares and anxieties of a business life, to secure a momentary relaxation and rest among their peaceful surroundings. Mr. Van Winkle used sources such as colonial and revolutionary documents, old newspaper articles and individual's reminiscences to compile this pleasant and enjoyable history. Chapter subjects include discovery of the region, early settlements, native inhabitants, dissatisfaction with Gov. Kieft, English and Dutch rivalry, Revolutionary times, transportation, churches, War of 1812, Civil War, customs and habits, and old homes. There are over 25 maps and pictures, and an everyname index has been added.

The First World War was unlike any war that had ever been fought before in history. Armies battled not for colonial power or territory, but for loyalty to alliances formed during the 1800s. The obligations owed by the main powers to their respective alliances saw senseless death sprawled across Europe. The spark that started the fire was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the archduke of the Austro-Hungarian empire by Serbian nationalists, which would otherwise have remained a relatively minor conflict if it were not for the blind allegiances of the European countries that led all-out war to break out. The entire continent of Europe was drawn into battles that left Europe devastated and caused a chain reaction of events that would shape Europe today. Liege was one of the most important battles fought in the war, as it was the first land battle fought only days after the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance declared war. The battle shook the Allies when they realised that the powerful weapons used by the Germans were able to reduce some of Europe's strongest fortifications to rubble, which reduced their faith in fixed fortifications as an effective defense. The battle of Liege involved weaponry and technology that was unprecendented, advanced military strategy, and relentless and blatant disregard for the rules of warfare by Germany, which was subsequently repeated in other battles across the continent. Although the battle did not impact heavily upon Germany's planned invasion of France, the battle resulted in many deaths on both sides in only 12 days...

This war was one of the greatest known gruesome battles in the world's history, which occurred from 1914 to 1918. From August 14 to the 25th of 1914, the main clashes of the Battle of the Frontiers took place. The complete time covered goes from August 7 to September 13. While the seven Imperial German units moved westwards, from the timetables that historians provide us, it can be shown that the German planned a very methodical attack on France which was known as The Schlieffen Plan. If there were to be an invasion from the Imperial Germany, the commander of France's army organized a defensive plan, known as Plan XVII. This plan was the French army's safety net in order to create an offensive movement on the perimeter of the eastern and the northeast Belgian and French border, which was in the province of Ardennes. On the affirmation of war breaking out between France and Germany, the French military organized an advancement east and north-eastward in order to counter the German threat. The Battle of the Frontiers had four principal battles in 1914: The Battle of Lorraine - also called Morhange - from August 14 to 25. The Battle of the Ardennes, which took place from the 21 to 23 August. The Battle of Charleroi on 21 to 23 August, and lastly the Battle of the Mons which lasted only for one day, August 23. Germany's military prepared to engage in a somewhat altered rendition of the Schlieffen Plan, which was developed in 1905 by Count Alfred von Schlieffen.
