A leading figure in contemporary art since the early 1970s, Chuck Close is internationally renowned for his monumentally scaled portrait paintings, based on photographs. Close likes to push the boundaries of different techniques, processes and materials, working with various collaborators to achieve his vision. His first public artwork, Subway Portraits, featured a series of 12 mosaic and tile artworks, was commissioned by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts & Design program in 2017. This book presents Chuck Close's new series of mosaic artworks as well as related works, such as prints, tapestries and photographs. It also documents the production process of these works by fabricators Mosaika Art and Design and Magnolia Editions, as well as the 12 works they produced for the 86th St. Subway Station at Second Avenue in New York City. Text in English and Italian.

This book is an unprecedented documentation of the relationship between sculpture and mosaic, its birth and evolution. This book explores the different application of the concept of 'tesserae' by sculptors beginning in the 1930s, when Lucio Fontana and Mirko Basaldella first embarked upon their research on mosaic and the plastic arts. The peculiar creative process behind their creations was inspired by primitive Mesoamerican sculptures decorated with mosaics, viewed by the two artists in different times and places, and also by the growing interest in ancient Latin American art that was felt in Italy from the 1920s onwards. While Fontana and Mirko may be defined as the 'forerunners' of the happy union between sculpture and mosaic in the 1960s and 1970s, in the following decades it is Nane Zavagno and Riccardo Licata who set the main research trends - the former, especially for that which regards the use of 'untraditional' materials, and the latter for the use of mosaic tesserae in contemporary art. Subsequently, the art of mosaic sculpture unfolds following all of the main expressive moods of 20th and 21st century sculpture - iconic or aniconic, poetics or narrative, symbolic or conceptual - intensifying and emerging as a 'specific genre' at the close of the 1970s thanks to works by Antonio Trotta, Athos Ongaro and the Transavantgarde movement of Chia and Paladino. Ultimately, from the second half of the 1980s to the present, research and artistic production multiplies with varying and peculiar results - also thanks to some works of international relevance made in Ravenna, such as the tomb of Rudolf Nureyev in Paris. Hence the 'sculpture and mosaic' phenomenon witnesses a surge forwards with artists from all over the world who employ it in increasingly innovative and unexpected ways, consolidating the perception that mosaic sculpture has by now become an independent art form. Text in English and Italian.

Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub collaborated on films together from the mid-1960s through the mid-2000s, making formally radical adaptations in several languages of major works of European literature by authors including Franz Kafka, Bertolt Brecht, Friedrich Hölderlin, Pierre Corneille, Arnold Schoenberg, Cesare Pavese, and Elio Vittorini. The impact of their work comes in part from a search for radical objectivity, a theme present in certain underground currents of modernist art and theory in the writings of Benjamin and Adorno as well as in the Objectivist movement, a crucial group within American modernist poetry whose members included Louis Zukofsky, George Oppen, and Charles Reznikoff, with connections to William Carlos Williams and Ezra Pound. Through a detailed analysis of the films of Straub and Huillet, the works they adapted, and Objectivist poems and essays, Benoît Turquety locates common practices and explores a singular aesthetic approach where a work of art is conceived as an object, the artist an anonymous artisan, and where the force of politics and formal research attempt to reconcile with one another.

This lurking malice steadily increased, inveterate as the incurable weariness in their muscles. They were born with this disease of the soul inherited from their fathers. Like a black shadow it accompanied them to their graves, spurring on their lives to crime, hideous in its aimless cruelty and brutality. On holidays the young people came home late at night, dirty and dusty, their clothes torn, their faces bruised, boasting maliciously of the blows they had struck their companions, or the insults they had inflicted upon them; enraged or in tears over the indignities they themselves had suffered; drunken and piteous, unfortunate and repulsive. Sometimes the boys would be brought home by the mother or the father, who had picked them up in the street or in a tavern, drunk to insensibility.

Following the death of Pope Chrysostom I, the election of a new pope begins, a process elaborately colored with all the political intrigue we are used to in secular elections After numerous votes, a dark-horse candidate, Italian Cardinal Daniele Tondi, is elected as the new pope. Once elected, Daniele is introduced to centuries of ancient traditions and beliefs dating back to St. Peter hin1self and is faced with the troubling but terribly important question: which of these traditions and beliefs are fact and which are fiction? His investigation takes Daniele from Israel, to Egypt, to Mother Russia, and eventually to New York. While Daniele is trying to wrap his head around the meaning of these 2000-year-old traditions and beliefs, a mystery known to only a few, there are Eminences in the College of Cardinals who wish his search to fail. Why? What secrets do these sacred documents hold? What dangers surround these beliefs and traditions? Daniele surrounds himself with a few trusted allies - his own family and the powerful Corsini family. His physician Emilio Corsini, and his first cousin Joel, a journalist covering the Vatican help Daniele and his close friend Prince Amadeo DiLeone, the Persona. But can they overcome the power of the Cardinals. Who will prevail? What does Daniele's quest ultimately reveal? Here is a powerful, rarely told story, that takes the reader on a fascinating journey through troubled times, while looking at the world through a lens many centuries old.

This is the first-ever English translation of Daniele Barbaro’s 1567 Italian translation of and commentary on Vitruvius’s Ten Books of Architecture, an encyclopaedic treatment of science and technology whose influence extended far beyond its day. Intended to both interpret and expand upon the Vitruvian text, Barbaro’s erudite commentary reflects his Aristotelian approach, particularly his fascination with the relationship between science and the arts. This treatise offers a window onto the architectural ideals of the 1500s, as well as then-current notions of philosophy, mathematics, music, astronomy, mechanics, and more. The text is accompanied by illustrations by the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and his contemporaries. Palladio’s own Four Books on Architecture, published in 1570, was just one of many treatises on architecture that was inspired by the ideas contained here.An overview of Daniele Barbaro’s thinking is presented in a foreword by Branko Mitrovic´. The collocation of Barbaro’s treatise between those of Alberti and Palladio is addressed in a foreword by Robert Tavernor. Kim Williams provides a translator’s note to orient the reader. The text of the translation is cross-referenced to both Barbaro's 1567 publication and standard divisions of Vitruvius. The volume includes a detailed index of subjects and an index of proper names.
