The Democratic Theory of Hans-Georg Gadamer

The Democratic Theory of Hans-Georg Gadamer

Darren Walhof

Springer International Publishing AG
2016
sidottu
This book examines the distinctive contribution that the writings of Hans-Georg Gadamer make to democratic theory. Walhof argues that Gadamer’s hermeneutical philosophy enlarges our perspective by shifting our view away from individual citizens to what exists between citizens, thereby allowing us to envision political realities that are otherwise hard to see. These realities include the disclosure of truth in democratic politics; achieving common ground in democratic dialogue, even amidst significant disagreement and diversity; the public and political nature of the religious traditions that make claims on and shape citizens; and the solidarities that connect us to each other and enable democratic action. The author argues that bringing these dimensions to awareness enriches our theories of democracy and is particularly crucial in an era of hyper-partisanship, accelerating inequality, and social conflicts involving racial, sexual, and religious identities.

Darren Aronofsky's Noah

Darren Aronofsky's Noah

Aronofsky Darren

Following on the heels of his successful film Black Swan, celebrated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky turns his talent to the epic big-budget biblical tradition with his film Noah. Noah (Russell Crowe) attempts to tell his people to cease their mistreatment of the earth in order to be saved. No one listens to his warnings, and Noah and his family are cast out to fend for themselves in the wilderness. Noah approaches a race of giant six-armed angels known as the Watchers to rally them to his cause. The film touches on themes found throughout Aronofsky's work - dichotomy of life/death, inner turmoil, otherness - presented with the iconic Aronofsky singular and compelling aesthetic. This film book is an extension of Aronofsky's otherworldly sensibilities; it showcases art from the film and the director at work, and is a must-have for fans of Aronofsky and of cinema everywhere.
Darren Bader: 77 And/Or 58 And/Or 19
This volume of writings by New York conceptualist Darren Bader (born 1978) features texts for 77 artworks. Writing is at the core of Bader's work: he offers deceptively simple propositions for artworks to be carried out by gallerists, museums and collectors who then exhibit the works. Each time a work is sold, Bader produces a text that explains the parameters of the artwork. The propositions can be extremely precise or abstract; however, these guides are not made available to the public. Bader has also written propositions for impossible artworks, such as a proposal for installing a baby-changing table under Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. This book foregrounds Bader's writing and provides a key to his humorous and sometimes enigmatic works.

Darren Aronofsky’s Films and the Fragility of Hope offers the first sustained analysis of the current oeuvre of the film director, screenwriter, and producer Darren Aronofsky. Including Pi (1998), Requiem for a Dream (2000), The Fountain (2006), The Wrestler (2008), Black Swan (2010), and Noah (2014), Aronofsky’s filmography is discussed with respect to his style and the themes of his films, making astute connections with the work of other directors, other movies and works of art, and connecting his films with other disciplines such as math, philosophy, psychology, and art history.Jadranka Skorin-Kapov deploys her background in philosophy and math to analyze an American filmmaker with an individual voice, working on both independent productions and big-budget Hollywood films. Aronofsky is revealed to be a philosopher’s director, considering the themes of life and death, addiction and obsession, sacrifice, and the fragility of hope. Skorin-Kapov discusses his ability to visually present challenging intersections between art and philosophy. Concluding with a transcript of a conversation between the author and Aronofsky himself, Darren Aronofsky’s Films and the Fragility of Hope is a much-needed study on this American auteur.
