Folk singer and folk music collector, writer, painter, journalist, art critic, whalerman, sheep station roustabout, Marxist, and much more - this is the story of A. L. (Bert) Lloyd's extraordinary life. A. L. Lloyd played a key part in the folk music revival of the 1950s and 60s, but that is only part of his story. Dave Arthur documents how Lloyd became a member of the Communist Party, forceful antifascist, trade unionist and an important part of left-wing culture from the early 1930s to his death in 1982. Following his return from Australia as a 21-year-old, self-educated agricultural labourer, he was at the heart of the most important left-wing movements and highly respected for his knowledge in various fields. Dave Arthur recounts the life of a creative, passionate and life-loving Marxist, and in so doing provides a social history of a turbulent twentieth century.

Picture a mouse on the back of a falcon soaring over a castle. Imagine that mouse practicing jousting using a squirrel as his horse or storming through the corridors of Camelot with a cat and dozens of knights chasing him. Glimpse into Merlin's cottage as the mouse rummages through the wizard's spell books to learn a magic potion. If it weren't for that mouse King Arthur would never have pulled the sword from the stone. Otter and Arthur and the Sword in the Stone follows the adventures of a mouse nicknamed Otter who befriends a boy named Arthur and helps him become literature's most celebrated king. Dave Whitaker's story is aimed at elementary school-age readers, combining classic children's literature like Beverly Cleary's The Mouse and the Motorcycle with the legend of King Arthur.

Your Company Isn't Fast Enough. Here's How to Change That. The traditional hierarchical organization is dead, but what replaces it? Numerous new models--the agile organization, the networked organization, and holacracy, to name a few--have emerged, but leaders need to know what really works. How do you build an organization that is responsive to fast-changing markets? What kind of organization delivers both speed and scale, and how do you lead it?Arthur Yeung and Dave Ulrich provide leaders with a much-needed blueprint for reinventing the organization. Based on their in-depth research at leading Chinese, US, and European firms such as Alibaba, Amazon, DiDi, Facebook, Google, Huawei, Supercell, and Tencent, and drawing from their synthesis of the latest organization research and practice, Yeung and Ulrich explain how to build a new kind of organization (a "market-oriented ecosystem") that responds to changing market opportunities with speed and scale. While other books address individual pieces of the puzzle, Reinventing the Organization offers a practical, integrated, six-step framework and looks at all the decisions leaders need to make--choosing the right strategies, capabilities, structure, culture, management tools, and leadership--to deliver radically greater value in fast-moving markets. For any leader eager to build a stronger, more responsive organization and for all those in HR, organizational development, and consulting who will shape and deliver it, this book provides a much-needed roadmap for reinvention.

Dave doesn't get out much. He's never been popular at parties, or first picked in dodge ball. One thing Dave has always been, though, is a bad roommate. It's not that he leaves dirty dishes out and forgets to flush (though let's face it, he does), it's more about how he manages to always screw things up. For instance, blowing people up. It's not intentional, usually, but Dave's issue is that he's a demon, and not a particularly successful one. Dave is a play in one act for a cast of five that takes place in the middle of a bedroom renovation. A simple attempt at a harmless joke takes an unexpected turn when the couple unwittingly summon Dave. The story follows the three through the ensuing week as the work to finish the bedroom, plan a party, and no get blown up. GENRE - Dark comedy LENGTH - 35-45 minutes CAST - 2 females, 3 males SET - Home interior/bedroom Request Performance Rights: http: //bit.ly/fienen-inquire

Dave Brubeck's Time Out ranks among the most popular, successful, and influential jazz albums of all time. Released by Columbia in 1959 alongside such other landmark albums as Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and Charles Mingus's Mingus Ah Um, Time Out became the first jazz album to be certified platinum, while its featured track, "Take Five" became the first jazz single to surpass one million copies sold. In addition to its commercial successes, the album is widely recognized as a pioneering endeavor into the use of odd meters in jazz. With its opening track, "Blue Rondo a la Turk" written in 9/8, its hit single "Take Five" in 5/4, and equally innovative plays on the more common 3/4 and 4/4 meters on other tracks, Take Five has played an important role in the development of modern jazz. In this book, author Stephen A. Crist draws on nearly ten years of archival research to offer the most thorough examination to date of this seminal jazz album. Supplementing his research with interviews with key individuals, including Brubeck's widow Iola and daughter Catherine, as well as interviews conducted with Brubeck himself prior to his passing in 2012, Crist paints a complete picture of the album's origins, creation, and legacy. Couching careful analysis of each of the album's seven tracks within historical and cultural context, he offers fascinating insights into the composition and development of some of the albums best known songs. From Brubeck's 1958 State Department-sponsored tour of Turkey during which he first encountered the aksak rhythms that would from the basis of "Blue Rondo a la Turk" to the backstage jam session that laid the seeds for "Take Five", Crist sheds an exciting new light on one of the most significant albums in jazz history.

Dave Brubeck and the Performance of Whiteness

Dave Brubeck and the Performance of Whiteness

How can we--jazz fans, musicians, writers, and historians--understand the legacy and impact of a musician like Dave Brubeck? It is undeniable that Brubeck leveraged his fame as a jazz musician and status as a composer for social justice causes, and in doing so, held to a belief system that, during the civil rights movement, modeled a progressive approach to race and race relations. It is also true that it took Brubeck, like others, some time to understand the full spectrum of racial power dynamics at play in post-WWII, early Cold War, and civil rights-era America. Dave Brubeck and the Performance of Whiteness uses Brubeck's performances of whiteness across his professional, private, and political lives as a starting point to understand the ways in which whiteness, privilege, and white supremacy more fully manifested in mid-century America. How is whiteness performed and re-performed? How do particular traits become inscribed with whiteness, and further, how do those traits, now racialized in a listener's mind, filter the sounds a listener hears? To what extent was Brubeck's whiteness made by others? How did audiences and critics use Brubeck to craft their own identities centered in whiteness? Drawing on archival records, recordings, and previously conducted interviews, Dave Brubeck and the Performance of Whiteness listens closely for the complex and shifting frames of mid-century whiteness, and how they shaped the experiences of Brubeck's critics, audiences, and Brubeck himself. Throughout, author Kelsey Klotz asks what happens when a musician tries to intervene, using his privilege as a tool with which to disrupt structures of white supremacy, even as whiteness continues to retain its hold on its beneficiaries.
