Forests and Fires: A Paleoethnobotanical Assessment of Craft Production Sustainability on the Peruvian North Coast (950-1050 C.E.)

During the Middle Sican period (C.E. 950-1050) on the North Coast of Peru, artisans developed a sophisticated tradition of ceramic and metalworking production amidst dry coastal forests of the region. Organic fuel resources, specifically wood, clearly played a vital role in the manufacture of these objects; however, this component of production has been largely overlooked. Thus, a major gap in our understanding of the relationship between Sican period production and the local landscape has developed. The Sican Archaeological Project (SAP) suggests that the production of metal and ceramics during this period likely placed the local fuel resources under considerable stress. Yet, an evaluation of the archaeological data is essential to assess the degree of overexploitation, identifying the fuels used, their contexts for use, and their role in local ecology. This study interprets how Middle Sican artisans met their fuel-wood requirements for production in light of easily endangered forest resources. An examination of the archaeological charcoal from Middle Sican period kilns, hearths, and metal furnaces permits the reconstruction of fuel use and the ecological setting of production. This unique site demonstrates the concurrent production of metal and ceramics, as well as the presence of domestic activity. Using wood anatomy of fuels recovered from archaeological features, the author identified the fuel materials of different use contexts.
Yids (Not 'Yid Army'): A History of Anti-Semitism

Why have the Jews been vilified throughout their history? Why the anti-Semitism? Historians from time immemorial have stated the main reason for this is that the Jews killed Jesus Christ: the crucifixion was at the behest of the Jews of Israel. Indeed, the Jews until this day do not accept Jesus as a prophet of God at all. This inability to recognise Jesus as a man sent by God has infuriated Christians for centuries. They see it as a rejection of God the father himself. Worthy of condemnation. Moreover, the Jews reject the mission of the Prophet Muhammad. They regard Muhammad as an imposter. Many see this rejection of two of the world's major religions as a selfish, inward looking characteristic of Judaism. What follows is the scriptural background to the rejection of Jesus by the Jews after which come quotations from history, many of them condemnatory and some of questionable authenticity. But intended to indicate the make-up of anti- Semitism, the discussion of which is not presented in a balanced way in present times.

nerve; subsequently, however, they concluded that the recordings had been from aberrant cells of the cochlear nucleus lying central to the glial margin of the VIII nerve (GALAMBOS and DAVIS, 1948). The first successful recordmgs from fibres of the cochlear nerve were made by TASAKI (1954) in the guinea pig. These classical but necessarily limited results were greatly extended by ROSE, GALAMBOS, and HUGHES (1959) in the cat cochlear nucleus and by KATSUKI and co-workers (KATSUKI et at. , 1958, 1961, 1962) in the cat and monkey cochlear nerve. Perhaps the most significant developments have been the introduction of techniques for precise control of the acoustic stimulus and the quantitative analysis of neuronal response patterns, notably by the laboratories of KIANG (e. g. GERSTEIN and KIANG, 1960; KIANG et at. , 1962b, 1965a, 1967) and ROSE (e. g. ROSE et at. , 1967; HIND et at. , 1967). These developments have made possible a large number of quanti tative investigations of the behaviour of representative numbers of neurons at these levels of the peripheral auditory system under a wide variety of stimulus conditions. Most of the findings discussed herein have been obtained on anaesthetized cats. Where comparative data are available, substantially similar results have been obtained in other mammalian species (e. g. guinea pig, monkey, rat). Certain significant differences have been noted in lizards, frogs and fish as would be expect ed from the different morphologies of their organs of hearing (e. g.

For adults and young adults 15 and older. David is a super-bright, loveable, always helpful and compassionate 17-year-old. Everybody in his small town loves him. He pretty well runs the show in his high school. This story covers one week or so of his junior year during which there is a date to the Winter Dance, a band concert, church choir practice, sports, classes, interaction with his family - the usual things in a teen boy's life. The more meaningful story, however, deals with David's struggle to make sense of life - to find some purpose for living and fend off his reoccurring depression. He has lots of meaningful conversations with his best friend. They are different - polar opposites - in almost every way, and yet they share one important trait - the overriding desire to figure things out: why is there hate, how can greedy people just ignore the pain and suffering in the world, are there universally agreed upon standards of right and wrong, good and evil? Their very serious search is woven in among their rather normal teenage lives - the fun, the accomplishments, the associations, the good times and the bad. In the end, for David, he comes to believe that are all his options are bad.
