The Natural Gas Industry in Appalachia

The Natural Gas Industry in Appalachia

David A. Waples

McFarland Co Inc
2012
pokkari
The large scale, practical uses of natural gas were initially introduced by innovators Joseph Pew and George Westinghouse for the steel and glass industries in Pittsburgh, and local gas companies evolved from individual wells to an interstate supply network acquired by Rockefeller's Standard Oil interests. Natural gas is now a prevalent part of American markets and with the production from the Marcellus shale is filling the critical void left by a lack of new coal, oil, and nuclear power facilities. This vital American enterprise began in the Appalachian states as an accidental and underestimated byproduct of the oil rush of 1859. This book explores the evolution and significance of the natural gas industry to the present day.

Gravestone peddler Fraser Stephens is prematurely slouching towards middle age, with one hundred pounds of extra weight, the burden of caring for a child with mild cerebral palsy, and a wife who is having an affair--with another woman. Depressed, and on the verge of doing himself in, Fraser hears the host of a radio call-in show who becomes his ghostly motivational coach in an effort to turn his life around. He begins an uncertain journey, riddled with false hopes and colossal personal mistakes before he sees real progress. Fraser visualizes playing a piano at a ski lodge and meeting the woman of his dreams, but his fantasy will come true only if he understands what he truly must recognize--his own self-worth. "Piano Dreams" is the inspirational rags-to-riches, sometimes heartbreaking, but often funny novel of self-discovery that leads a man to his ultimate beautiful reward.
A VOICE FOR FREEDOM David Ivon Jones in Wales and South Africa Articles & Speeches 1901-1924
David Ivon Jones was born in Wales in1883 and died in 1924 in the Soviet Union. In his death-bed 'Political Testament', Jones urged his comrades to 'carry out the great revolutionary mission imposed on colonies in general and South Africa in particular with revolutionary devotion and dignity, concentrating on shaking the foundations of world capitalism and British imperialism'.The 'Delegate for Africa, ' as Jones was known in the Communist International, is now commemorated by a plaque on the Unitarian chapel in his native town of Aberystwyth. But it is in South Africa that his legacy is particularly treasured today by the South African Communist Party and the African National Congress. This collection of his articles and speeches, in both Welsh and English, testifies to his deep humanitarian and communist principles. They embody and express his love for his Welsh homeland, for his adopted South Africa and its native peoples and for revolutionary Russia and its working class and peasantry. David Ivon Jones was a patriot and an internationalist, who unsparingly committed himself to the liberation of all humanity.

Christianity, in its Catholic, Protestant and Nonconformist forms, has played an enormous role in the history of Wales and in the defining and shaping of Welsh identity over the past two thousand years. Biblical place names, an urban and rural landscape littered with churches, chapels, crosses and sacred sites, a bardic and literary tradition deeply imbued with Christian themes in both the Welsh and English languages, and the songs sung by tens of thousands of rugby supporters at the national stadium in Cardiff, all hint at a Christian presence that was once universal. Yet for many in contemporary Wales, the story of the development of Christianity in their country remains little known. While the history of Christianity in Wales has been a subject of perennial interest for Welsh historians, much of their work has been highly specialised and not always accessible to a general audience. Standing on the shoulders of some of Wales’s finest historians, this is the first single-volume history of Welsh Christianity from its origins in Roman Britain to the present day. Drawing on the expertise of four leading historians of the Welsh Christian tradition, this volume is specifically designed for the general reader, and those beginning their exploration of Wales’s Christian past.
