Helmi's Shadow

Helmi's Shadow

Helmi's Shadow tells the sweeping true story of two Russian Jewish refugees, a mother (Rachel Koskin) and her daughter (Helmi). With determination and courage, they survived decades of hardship in the hidden corners of war-torn Asia and then journeyed across the Pacific at the end of the Second World War to become United States citizens after seeking safe harbor in the unlikely western desert town of Reno, Nevada. This compelling narrative is also a memoir, told lovingly by Helmi's son, David, of growing up under the wings of these strong women in an unusual American family.Rachel Koskin was a middle-class Russian Jew born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1896. Ten years later, her family fled from the murderous pogroms against Jews in the Russian Empire eastward to Harbin, a Russian-controlled city within China's borders on the harsh plain of Manchuria. Full of lively detail and the struggles of being stateless in a time of war, the narrative follows Rachel through her life in Harbin, which became a center of Russian culture in the Far East; the birth of her daughter, Helmi, in Kobe, Japan; their life together in the slums of Shanghai and back in Japan during World War II, where they endured many more hardships; and their subsequent immigration to the United States. This remarkable account uncovers a history of refugees living in war-torn China and Japan, a history that to this day remains largely unknown. It is also a story of survival during a long period of upheaval and war—from the Russian Revolution to the Holocaust—and an intimate portrait of an American immigrant family. David reveals both the joys and tragedies he experienced growing up in a multicultural household in post\-Second World War America with a Jewish mother, a live-in Russian grandmother, and a devout Irish Catholic American father. As David develops a clearer awareness of the mysterious past lives of his mother and grandmother—and the impact of these events on his own understanding of the long-term effects of fear, trauma, and loss—he shows us that, even in times of peace and security, we are all shadows of our past, marked by our experiences, whether we choose to reveal them to others or not.
The Epistemological Spectrum

The Epistemological Spectrum

David K. Henderson; Terence Horgan

sidottu
David Henderson and Terence Horgan set out a broad new approach to epistemology, which they see as a mixed discipline, having both a priori and empirical elements. They defend the roles of a priori reflection and conceptual analysis in philosophy, but their revisionary account of these philosophical methods allows them a subtle but essential empirical dimension. They espouse a dual-perspective position which they call iceberg epistemology, respecting the important differences between epistemic processes that are consciously accessible and those that are not. Reflecting on epistemic justification, they introduce the notion of transglobal reliability as the mark of the cognitive processes that are suitable for humans. Which cognitive processes these are depends on contingent facts about human cognitive capacities, and these cannot be known a priori.

Scenes from a Life Unwritten. The Kurt David Hogan story
He has lived many layered lives: a filmmaker and actor in New York, a TV journalist throughout the South, a popular Quiet Storm radio host, TV show creator and showrunner, restaurateur, entrepreneur, and the founder of a bold apparel brand celebrating Black identity (blackisbigapparel.com). Always moving forward-even when the road curved unexpectedly-he chased one unwavering dream: to make films that move people and leave a mark. Born to Black intellectuals shaped by the Civil Rights Movement, Hogan's path was anything but linear. With humility, humor, and hard-won wisdom, he chronicles the scenes of his life that shaped him-and invites readers into the quiet triumphs and aching regrets that define a life still unfolding. Scenes from a Life Unwritten is a message in a bottle-not adrift on the tide, but focused and steady while riding the stormy waves, never losing sight of the shore on the other side. This story is not an end, but a beginning-for every dreamer still writing their own story, no matter where they are in it.

The Forced War is Prof. David L. Hoggan's tour de force on the origins and causes of World War II. This is not a polemic, but a well researched and documented historical work that delves into the hidden diplomatic background of the outbreak of the Germano-Polish War of 1939, which Britain for its own purposes turned into World War II. Prof. Hoggan uses official diplomatic correspondence and reports of the meetings of the various participants, primarily Great Britain, France, Poland and National Socialist Germany. He traces the roots of the conflict from Versailles until the final declaration of War by Great Britain and France upon Germany and their refusal to enter into peace negotiations to stop the war which Lord Halifax and the Tories had skillfully maneuvered Poland into starting with the worthless "Guarantee" given to Poland to induce her leaders to pursue a hard line against Germany in the hopes of conquering German territory and reestablishing a Great Poland as had existed several centuries past. The book is meticulously footnoted, and while a historical work of great depth and breadth is both engaging and easy to read. Prof. Hoggan wrote the work in 1961 and it was originally published in Germany under the title "Der Erzwungene Krieg" (The Forced War) where it gained kudos from academics and laymen alike. If the reader is a history buff of World War II, or simply wishes to know how and why the war happened, this is a book that cannot be missed.
