Mark's Gospel--Prior or Posterior?

Mark's Gospel--Prior or Posterior?

David Neville

BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING PLC
2002
sidottu
The similarities and difference of arrangement and order of episodes in the gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke have always been one of the major critera for resolving the Synoptic Problem. How important, and how reliable are arguments based on such considerations, and where might they lead? Here Neville reviews these issues in detail, explaining the significance of his conclusions for understanding the literary relationships among the three Synoptics gospels, and particularly for the competing theories of Markan priority (the standard two-source hypothesis) and Markan posteriority (the Griesbach hypothesis).

sidottu
Following on from the success of Promoting Positive Parenting, David Neville, Dick Beak and Liz King have now written this book which looks at the particular problems and challenges associated with working with parents of teenagers. The Centre for Fun and Families (from which the authors hail) is a national voluntary organization which was established in 1990. Its objective is to empower parents who are experiencing behaviour and communication difficulties with their children and young people, through the use of group work programmes. This book shares with readers the theoretical ideas that underpin the work of the Centre and provides a practical guide of how to undertake such a programme, thereby enabling the reader to react sensitively and productively to unforeseen circumstances which are inevitable when running groups. Professionals coming to these methods for the first time can work through the text safe in the knowledge that these are tried and tested ways of working, which are known to be effective. At a time when attention is focused on the importance of parenting and the way in which children are brought up and guided into adulthood, no practitioner working in this field should ignore the message within these covers.

The Vehement Jesus composes a fresh examination and interpretation of several perplexing passages in the Gospels that, at face value, challenge the conviction that the mission and message of Jesus were peaceful. Using narrative analysis and various forms of intratextual critique in the service of a hermeneutic of shalom, the author makes the case that Gospel portrayals of the vehement Jesus are compatible with, perhaps even indispensable to, the composite canonical portrait of Jesus as the Messiah of Peace. As a result, this exploration in New Testament theology and ethics makes an invaluable contribution to the crucial conversation about the role of Jesus' life and teaching in Christian reflection on the morality of violence today. ""This engaging work of patient and passionate scholarship is theologically productive. Neville is well-informed, fair-minded, meticulous, creative, and--above all--honest."" --Dale C. Allison, Jr., Princeton Theological Seminary ""Do the Gospels present Jesus as committed to the practice of non-violence? Tackling a set of especially challenging texts in the Gospels and vigorously engaging the counter-arguments of other scholars, David Neville makes a convincing case for a vehement, yet non-violent Jesus. This is an important book on a topic of biblical interpretation and ethics that has urgent relevance for our time."" --John T. Carroll, Union Presbyterian Seminary ""Every chapter of The Vehement Jesus contains a biblical bomb ready to explode. David Neville is not in the business of defusing and disposal; he opens the passages carefully and shows us what makes them tick. His exegesis is precise, contextually sensitive, self-critical, and conversant with a range of opinion both contemporary and ancient. His conclusions are judicious and never predetermined. The author deserves our thanks for a tractable treatise on intractable texts."" --C. Clifton Black, Princeton Theological Seminary ""Neville's close, contextual readings of Gospel texts that seemingly implicate Jesus in violence (by teaching or action) could be a model for biblical scholars who want to face difficulties in the Bible head-on while respecting the normative, canonical thrust of Scripture (an ethical variant of the rule of faith). Without harmonizing variant traditions or reducing them to their supposedly 'historical' kernel, Neville proposes responsible readings of problematic texts in a manner that will be helpful to the church negotiating a violent world. Parenthetically, his treatment of the cursing of the fig tree is worth the price of the book."" --J. Richard Middleton, Roberts Wesleyan College David J. Neville is associate professor of theology and lecturer in New Testament studies at St Mark's National Theological Centre, the Canberra campus of Charles Sturt University's School of Theology. He is the author of two books on the synoptic problem and, most recently, A Peaceable Hope: Contesting Violent Eschatology in New Testament Narratives (2013).

Prophecy and Passion

Athol Gill sought to show that participation in community was integral to Christian descipleship. He recognized that individuals do not have the spiritual or material resources to maintain a lifestyle consistent with the radical teaching of Jesus. Athol made the words and actions, death and resurrection of Jesus the touchstone for all areas of life (including the social, political and economic), not merely private spirituality. His logic was simple, but it had profoundly disturbing implications: If Jesus is the human expression of God's love and purpose for humanity, his instruction in word and deed - not the values, norms and assumptions of society - should provide the church with its vision and direction.
Fulfilling the Law and the Prophets

Fulfilling the Law and the Prophets

Matthew Anslow; David J Neville

Pickwick Publications
2022
sidottu
Matthew's Gospel makes mention of prophets and prophecy more than any other canonical Gospel. Yet its perspective on prophecy has generally been neglected within biblical scholarship when, in fact, Jesus' prophetic vocation is a central christological theme for Matthew. This new study by Matthew Anslow seeks to draw attention to this underdeveloped focus within Matthean studies. The central claim of the book is that in Matthew's Gospel, Jesus' prophetic vocation is presented as a multi-faceted phenomenon, drawing on several prophetic traditions. Like biblical and popular prophets before him, Jesus is depicted by Matthew as calling Israel back to covenantal faithfulness, thereby providing guidance for the identity, theology, and communal life of God's people.

After serving as Prime Minister, however, Chamberlain left office a reviled and disdained public figure. This book seeks to explain these extremes while offering the author's assessment of what Chamberlain's historical reputation ought to be.

"Behind the Scenes" is an unrestrained Memoir with astonishing insight from an unusual friendship between two people, one a celebrity the other from humble origins. A rollercoaster of emotions and changes in fortunes, leading to addiction and death for one.It is an extraordinary collaboration, gripping and moving a "no holds barred" read exposing a troubled and vulnerable man few people could imagine. It delivers revelations and penetrates the insidious unknown that results from Cassidy's chosen path. Lies, deceit and false promises abound which only serves to frustrate Cassidy's rehabilitation and his descent into a bottomless pit. Despite his best endeavours it was all to no avail. As if to complete an irretrievable redemption Cassidy now enters the world of pornography. The book covers a friendship forged and based on solid foundations. A friendship that came along at the right time for both men. The author is not economic with the truth and the contents of the book are not exaggerated or embroidered. It is a peek into the unknown which may question our previous perceptions and impressions of Cassidy. Endeavours are made to convey an understanding of the man behind the flaws rather than the reverse, If the book achieves that the promise to Cassidy to "tell all" will be fulfilled.
