In this monograph, Gregory M. Pell provides a full-length study on the poetry of Davide Rondoni, one of Italy’s most active contemporary writers and thinkers. This book includes comparative studies of Jorie Graham, Gjertrud Schnackenberg, Charles Wright, John Ashbery, Patrizia Fazzi, and Mario Luzi. As the first book in English on Davide Rondoni’s poetry, this study explores how the Italian poet deals with art, and the places of art, in a way that transcends the notion of ekphrasis (or, verbal representation of pictorial art) to see poetry as the transcription of an experience with art, thus becoming a sort of anti-ekphrasis, or an atmospheric ekphrasis. The social and religious aspects of art take precedence over aesthetic concerns, without discounting them, in Rondoni’s unsentimental poetry, which takes the form of recitative theatrical monologues. Thus, art becomes more than simple visual representation or the subject of an art history catalogue. Instead, in certain poets, such as Rondoni, we experience life through art’s complete process: from the artist’s originary idea to the work’s execution to our interaction with it in the here and now.

Davide Balliano (Turin, IT 1983) is an artist whose research operates on the thin line of demarcation between painting and sculpture. Utilising an austere, minimal language of abstract geometries in strong dialogue with architecture, his work investigates existential themes such as the identity of man in the age of technology and his relationship with the sublime. Through a practice that is self-described as monastic, austere and concrete, Balliano’s meticulous paintings appear, upon first glance, clean and precise. However, closer inspection reveals scrapes and scratches that uncover the organic wooden surface underneath the layers of paint, as a decaying façade of abandoned modernistic intentions. In addition to painting, Davide Balliano is also known for his sculptural work, which translates the visual vocabulary found in his paintings into solid objects, often in stainless steel or ceramic. The volume, which offers a wide selection of works that offer a complete overview of his production, contains a conversation between Osman Can Yerebakane and the artist, and a critical text by Michele Robecchi. This volume recounts the result of two years of extraordinary collaboration between the architects and the clients. The building, a striking new addition to the skyline, is the link between the industrial area and the old town and takes its triangular forms from the traditional pitched roofs of Oberriet. The book focuses on the innovative technologies used for the project, which includes new details and materials not yet used in architecture the facade system for example, which displays structural glazing details (by Jansen AG) and internal glazed fireproof doors. The buildings heating, ventilation, lighting and energy consumption meets strict Swiss Minergie standards, meaning that it has excellent sustainable credentials.
After 20 years working for Mario Botta, Davide Macullo founded his own office in Lugano in 2000. His architecture is the result of dialogue with the location and is characterised by intuition, openness and emotionality. His aim is to use architecture to improve the quality of life and charge locations sensorially. This monograph structures the work of the Ticino-based architect – comprising over 400 projects, including master plans, international hotels, furniture design and art consulting – into three main chapters. The focus lies on ten of his most definitive buildings, such as the WAP Art Space (2017) in Seoul, which combines art and housing in a single spatial structure that is bathed in light, while also oscillating between openness and withdrawal; as well as the SCI Club Frott in Rossa, Grisons, which was built in 2021. This polygonal wooden structure serves as a cultural meeting place, while providing a contemporary response to the Alpine building tradition and integrating itself harmoniously into the Val Calanca.
