Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years War

Deborah A. Fraioli

When in Henry II of England married Eleanor of Aquitaine of France in 1154 A.D., he became at once the reigning sovereign over a vast stretch of land extending across all of England and half of France—and yet, according to the feudal hierarchy of the times, a vassal to the King of France. This situation, which placed French and English borders in such a tenuous position, solidified the precarious ground on which the Hundred Years War was to be fought 183 years later. This epic border conflict—which was contemporaneous with the age of popular uprisings and the Bubonic Plague, fought according to enduring notions of chivalry and the budding pride of nationality, and which numbered among its participants Richard II, the Black Prince of Wales, Henry IV, Henry V, and Charles of Navarre—ultimately depended upon a peasant woman, Joan of Arc, to reinforce the French ideal of a sacred kingdom, swing the pendulum once more in the direction of the French, and bring this perennial conflict to an end. Topics of the theme essays have been selected to show the diversity of this complex war, and include discussions of: the origins of the war; the age of popular rebellion; chivalry's effect on 14th and 15th century warfare; the religion of the monarchy and the role of sacred kingship in the building of the French monarchy; and Joan of Arc's understanding of the war. An annotated timeline and a chronology of French and English Kings provide readers with an easy-to-follow overview of the Hundred Years War and the rulers who presided over it. Nineteen biographical sketches of key French and English figures lend a human aspect to historic names; and 14 annotated primary documents breathe fresh life into the topic, and provide students and readers with a new look at the period. The book concludes with an annotated bibliography and index.
Joan of Arc: The Early Debate

Joan of Arc: The Early Debate

[Does] an immense service to anyone interested in Joan of Arc... skillfully disentangles countless textual threads, all centered around one problem: the nature of Joan's mission as it was examined in the early theological debates... A thorough and timely book. MYSTICS QUARTERLY Joan of Arc arrived at the French court claiming to be sent by God to come to the aid of the dauphin Charles. Most studies of Joan focus on her political expediency, but the starting point of this book is her assertion that she was sent by God: it is the first real exploration of the application of the Catholic doctrine of discretio spirituum [the discernment of spirits] to her case, and of her reception as a visionary woman. The author examines contemporary theological documents which show genuine debate about Joan's mission and whether she was diabolically or divinely inspired, also taking into account the two major literary works dealing with her, Christine de Pizan's Ditie de Jehanne d'Arc and Martin Le Franc's Le champion des dames, as well as Joan's own letter to the English. Appendices offer translations of pertinent Latin and French texts. Professor DEBORAH FRAIOLI teaches in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Simmons College, Boston.

Dream of a Red Factory

Dream of a Red Factory

Drawing on previously unknown primary sources in both Chinese and Russian, Deborah A. Kaple has written a powerful and absorbing account of the model of factory management and organization that the Chinese communists formulated in the 1949-1953 period. She reveals that their "new" management techniques were adapted from Soviet propaganda during the harsh period of Stalin's post-war reconstruction. The idealized Stalinist management system consisted mainly of strict Communist Party control of all aspects of workers' lives, which is the root of such strong Party control over Chinese society today. Dream of a Red Factory is a rare and revealing look at the consolidation rule in China; told through the prism of the development of new "socialist" factories and enterprises. Kaple completely counters the old myth of the "Soviet monolith" in China, and carefully reconstructs how the Chinese communists came to rely on an idealized, propagandistic version of the Soviet model instead.

The level of an individual's engagement in any relationship be it spousal, friendships, business related, social, spiritual, or a myriad of others, is always predicated on the weakest commitment between the interacting individuals. Exorbitance: A Speculative Ethnography of Inheritance

Exorbitance: A Speculative Ethnography of Inheritance

Deborah A. Thomas

DUKE UNIVERSITY PRESS

sidottu
In Exorbitance, Deborah A. Thomas calls for new approaches to political sovereignty grounded in the embodied forms of autonomy and relation created in daily life. Rather than rooting sovereignty in the violence of the state and its institutions, Thomas conceives of sovereignty as the embodied refusal of law and dominion. Drawing on the insights of Caribbeanist thought and studies of Jamaican social, political, and spiritual life, Thomas proposes an exorbitant sovereignty enacted through a phenomenological notion of inheritance. Such a sovereignty emerges from alternative genealogies of governance, community, and ceremony that exceed Enlightenment expectations of political life. Thomas contends that the articulations of exorbitant sovereignty are emergent, ephemeral, and ultimately, relational. By outlining the perils and promises of our inheritance of colonial logics and the tools to refuse them, Thomas models a collaborative and collective anthropology oriented toward improvisational experimentation rather than ethnographic extraction.

Annie's Story, Blessed With A Gift

Annie's Story, Blessed With A Gift

Deborah a. Bowman

Independently Published
2017
nidottu
This story of love and faith by "different" people-now called "special" people-begs to be told. "Annie's Story" is about a dwarfed, mentally slow child growing up in Colonial America, who is "Blessed With A Gift" from the Spiritual Universe. In Annie's lifetime, babies born with birth defects and their mothers were banished or put to death-their names cleansed from all church and legal records. Annie's message is timeless, and her shining spirit reveals that "History Does Repeat Itself" in the treatment, abuse, labeling, and bullying of women, children, and individuals with special needs. Factual research has confirmed what many generations have tried to eradicate or conceal as was done in the Salem Witch Hysteria of 1692-93, nearly half-a-century "after" Annie lived. JOIN THE ANNIE MOVEMENT to continue the fight for women's rights, cure birth defects, and stop bullying. Have perceptions changed all that much since the mid-1600s? Have they changed enough? Sadly, they have not. Purchase the book to support women and children. Please, write a review and contact the author. Fundraiser opportunities available.
