Privacy. We want lots of it for ourselves. We love to invade the privacy of others. We are willing to trade it for benefits of all kinds, including credit, social services, and friendship. Why is this? Where should we draw a line? How should we handle our ambivalence in an era in which privacy often appears to be under official attack? This book explores such questions by rooting into scarce literature to explain why privacy is such a strong need, reviewing a variety of methods for guarding privacy, and concluding that at one time America was a very fortunate place privacy-wise. McLean examines problem areas in which privacy invasions play, or have played, large roles. Rape and sexual offenses are analyzed; so, too, is news reporting that touches private matters and race relations.Privacy and its Invasion also has a point to make: that privacy, despite its dark side, is an idea whose time has come, an ancient need that now requires explicit endorsement and protection as a value. As a couple they are movers and shakers, pillars of the community. Yet the wife beats the husband. One morning, surprised by impulse, she hits him a little too hard. He seeks medical help. Word starts to seep out. Already the husband has alerted the district attorney and an assistant to his problem at home, and this latest escalation alarms them. Thus, they are drawn in. Along with family and friends of the couple, they maneuver to stop this domestic crisis from exploding into serious crime, formal charges, and scandal. They meddle, encourage separation, and suborn new romances for the distressed couple. This project impacts all of them. A private investigator discovers the wife has a shadow life. A counselor gets involved. A hoped-for resolution collapses. All are faced with picking up the pieces.This mystery tale in reverse offers no corpse on the floor at the start but threatens to put one on the floor at the end. The characters must negotiate a close web of relationships in a small town. An historic symbol of American violence hangs over the wife's family. Randomness, accident, and quirkiness also play parts. Violent incidents have stalked the wife's family. She copes well with this legacy - it appears from the outside. But within she does not, thus she faces a crisis. Her husband likes to fix things so they come out win-win for everyone. This is his virtue but also his flaw. He faces frustration this time, but he patiently soldiers on, contriving possible solutions the best he can. In addition, he has his own secret. There is also the new man, who is drawn to the wife by what at first he believed was a great stroke of luck. As her secrets trickle out to him, he must give the matter some serious consideration.The characters here strive to prevent a violent result in lives that appear to be wholesome, stable and mature, or to extricate themselves or to take on a risk.Although the conditions are serious, events turn funny now and then. Those involved enjoy these moments -- and usually they handle the difficult times with level heads. This is what you would expect: these are not kids; these people have some mileage on them.

A Midwestern sheriff's deputy, ambitious and on the rise, a transplant from New York now a refugee from the East Coast, takes on the investigation of a crime spun off from illegal trade in Native American artifacts. In the process he has to negotiate a minefield of racial angles in his own life as well as in the case and deal with dilettante Native Americans, people with scant Native American ancestry who use artifact hunting as an excuse to party. The deputy learns something about ethnic affiliation as he works the case. He solves it, but there are personal losses.

Harry G. Frankfurt begins his inquiry by asking, "What is it about human beings that makes it possible for us to take ourselves seriously?" Based on The Tanner Lectures in Moral Philosophy, Taking Ourselves Seriously and Getting It Right delves into this provocative and original question. The author maintains that taking ourselves seriously presupposes an inward-directed, reflexive oversight that enables us to focus our attention directly upon ourselves, and "[it] means that we are not prepared to accept ourselves just as we come. We want our thoughts, our feelings, our choices, and our behavior to make sense. We are not satisfied to think that our ideas are formed haphazardly, or that our actions are driven by transient and opaque impulses or by mindless decisions. We need to direct ourselves—or at any rate to believe that we are directing ourselves—in thoughtful conformity to stable and appropriate norms. We want to get things right." The essays delineate two features that have a critical role to play in this: our rationality, and our ability to love. Frankfurt incisively explores the roles of reason and of love in our active lives, and considers the relation between these two motivating forces of our actions. The argument is that the authority of practical reason is less fundamental than the authority of love. Love, as the author defines it, is a volitional matter, that is, it consists in what we are actually committed to caring about. Frankfurt adds that "The object of love can be almost anything—a life, a quality of experience, a person, a group, a moral ideal, a nonmoral ideal, a tradition, whatever." However, these objects and ideals are difficult to comprehend and often in conflict with each other. Moral principles play an important supporting role in this process as they help us develop and elucidate a vision that inspires our love. The first section of the book consists of the two lectures, which are entitled "Taking Ourselves Seriously" and "Getting It Right." The second section consists of comments in response by Christine M. Korsgaard, Michael E. Bratman, and Meir Dan-Cohen. The book includes a preface by Debra Satz.
